Maybe I'm being uncharitable, but the word "insurgents" just seems a little to emotionally charged to be used in this context.

Update:
I asked him if he meant to use the word, "insurgents" and he says, "yeah..."
and my email answer:

The definition does fit those candidates, but only if you ignore the current colloquialness.

Exactly what I was thinking. It wouldn't be hard to come up with video clips of Repubs claiming that the Tea Party is non-partisan. That directly contradicts the "Dem front group Tea Party" claims that have suddenly popped up and are sure to be touted by Fox News as the latest new Dem conspiracy.

The Repubs are actually in a bad spot and they deserve all the credit for being in that spot.
