Summer of Michael

Been staying away from this story. Don't really care about Michael Jackson. Even watched Kramer v. Kramer last night to avoid hearing about his memorial service. BTW, what performances by Hoffman and Streep.

Then I made the mistake of going on CNN.com and saw that Berry Gordy said "King of Pop" wasn't big enough for MJ. He's really the greatest entertainer that ever lived. "King of the Jews?" Anyway, then I saw some of the celeb names in attendance, and thought OMG, who is turning out for this event? I then wandered onto Drudge and saw an actual list. Lou Ferigno. A finalist from Britain's Got Talent Show or something. Corey Feldman. Levar Burton. I feel much better about our country.

Still, it wouldn't be too awful if a shark would take a nibble (nothing big of course) out of some poor surfer and we could get back to life as we knew it.

Hey... look... this is a little shout-out to the TPM community. I've been arrested for scalping tickets to the Ed McMahon funeral.

Oddly, I couldn't get the eBay bids above $3.23.

Any help with bail?

Hahahahahaha - good one.

$2.50 for both tickets Curt, and that's my final offer.

Agreed - Michael Jackson had talent. I prefered seeing him as a child star and in his earlier appearances before his plastic surgery forays.
To get this magnitude of attention at the time of his death shows the state and mentality of so many of our population. Enough already - let's pay more attention to the state of our economy, health care and our armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Let's get with it.

Wow. You have your sights set quite high. I was just hoping for a good old fashion shark attack. That's how silly this whole Michael Jackson saga is -- media induced shark attack hysteria would be a step up.

Less boring than a summer of sharks. Not as interesting as Diana's death. About equal to JFK Jr. gone missing. Not as juicy and not as big a frenzy as Monica Lewinsky's testimony before Ken Starr's grand jury (that summer, most political junkies knew these names: Bill Ginsburg, Jacob Stein, Plato Cacheris--to be honest, aren't we political junkies just as guilty of filling our heads with useless junk sometimes?) Those are the ones that come to mind right away.

You do realize that it's because people that put together other news go on vacation, and also because audiences are smaller because they are also on vacation? They pick one story that will deliver an audience, getting any audience in summer is tough, and they put everyone that's around on it. Josh Marshall himself used that excuse June 19 for not covering health care reform better. They don't call a certain genre of books "summer reading" for no reason.

All true. Rather than "summer reading," however, the Michael Jackson distraction is an unwelcome rainstorm. Bring back Monica and the sharks.
