Deep Thought

Deep Thought

Why are right-wing freaks now the self-appointed defenders of Jews, defending us from the candidates the overwhelming proportion of us Jews plan to vote for?

--Josh Marshall

Read the above post which addresses a point I have been making to friends for quite some time. But then it occurred to me that it may be in part due to a combination of two things: (1) neo-cons using Israel to sell the Iraq war and to otherwise make their case for whatever designs they have in the Middle East and (2) the susceptibility of right-wing freaks to the argument. Now that the spigot has been turned on, it's not so easy to turn off.

Also, its irrationality commends it to the future cause of getting Republicans elected in the next cycle by damaging the critical faculties of marginal voters.
There is no question that McCain and Palin are not running a unified campaign, and since the fanatics in the GOP detest McCain, they are free to use this as a laboratory to see how much they can debase the American mind so as to be more susceptible to the message in a year or two.
Look at the Goldwater campaign of '64. Many thought the Republicans had self-destructed for a generation, ushering in a second New Deal-like era of Democratic dominance, this time led by LBJ. But by 1966, the GOP had continued in the right-wing direction that seemed lunacy to most two years before, and by 1968, they were back in the White House, and Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, et al., were serving their aprenticeships under Nixon.
Whatever is prima facie ludicrous and counterintuitive is the standard MO of these people, and it works.
