OPEN THREAD: Dick' s 'Dithering' Speech/Mary's new 'Keep America Safe'
For all you Guys and Gals out there who just LOVE to twist Dick Cheney's knickers, I present you with an OPEN THREAD to have at it. It will be tagged as "SPORT."
PUT YOURSELVES ON IRONY ALERT!
I can't be the only one who believes that all this is about Mary running for office, can I?
So have some fun here; take your best shots! (sorry, pun intended)
From the (Denver) Examiner.com:
Former vice president Dick Cheney has made some negative remarks on President Obama's handling of the war in Afghanistan. Referring to President Obama as 'dithering' Dick Cheney delivered a speech titled, "Concerns about America's Foreign Policy Drift" at the Center for Security Policy on October 21, 2009. The remarks were delivered as Dick Cheney received the Keeper of the Flame Award. Here is the transcript of the speech as well as the full video.
Full transcript and video:
'President Obama has said he understands the stakes for America. When he announced his new strategy he couched the need to succeed in the starkest possible terms, saying, quote, "If the Afghan government falls to the Taliban - or allows al-Qaeda to go unchallenged - that country will again be a base for terrorists who want to kill as many of our people as they possibly can." End quote.
Five months later, in August of this year, speaking at the VFW, the President made a promise to America's armed forces. "I will give you a clear mission," he said, "defined goals, and the equipment and support you need to get the job done. That's my commitment to you."It's time for President Obama to make good on his promise. The White House must stop dithering while America's armed forces are in danger.Make no mistake, signals of indecision out of Washington hurt our allies and embolden our adversaries. Waffling, while our troops on the ground face an emboldened enemy, endangers them and hurts our cause.'

Liz Cheney, William Kristol, and Debra Burlingame have filed 501(c)4 papers for "Keep America Safe." They have already put out some videos, uh, propaganda films. Insiders say that sister Mary Cheney and father Richard (Dick) will join them.
"The Left has dozens of organizations and tens of millions of dollars dedicated to undercutting the war on terror," said Kristol, a seasoned partisan warrior. "The good guys need some help too."
Kristol, asked about the group, first joked that it would serve as a launching pad for his partners' political careers. Burlingame, however, flatly denied she's planning a run from liberal Westchester, and Cheney, who has been mentioned as a candidate for the Senate or House from Virginia, said her ambitions have nothing to do with it.
"It's not about me or my future as all, except to the extent it's about my future as an American, my future as a mom who cares deeply about the world my kids will inherit," she said.

The only headline containing the name Cheney that I'm interested in is the one that reads:

From your mouth to God's ears, but we all know he had had complete immunity conferred upon him already, and world courts probably will get talked out of any prosecutions.
I am just giddy about his 'J'accuse' moments, as though it weren't he who invaded then frittered away Afghanistan to the detriment of soldiers on both sides, all sides, plus civilians. He is a piece of work.

Mary Cheney lacks any personal achievements to warrant her having any national platform to say anything to anyone. It is an insult to America to perpetuate this noble-by-birth legacy. We value performance over pedigree. It's what makes us great. We do not bow down to princesses.

Think "Shock Doctrine" just for a moment, Gregor. And no achievements won't prevent the family from Running Her. ;-}

Gee, no accomplishments didn't stop Obama from running, and winning.

I admire your determination ... to be blind, but I do not find willful blindness admirable.
Remove your head from your ass. The President went to Harvard and was Editor of the Harvard Law Review. Let's not get stupid with affirmative action, either. No one at Harvard ever thought they were subject to those laws when it came to choosing who would be the Editor. Obama earned it.
Cheney went to Chicago Law School and despite her father's unbridled power, never managed to make much of herself in the Administration.
Barack did it on his own. Seriously, he did it on his own. Think about it. Or is it beyond your grasp to fathom the possibility that an African-American has sufficinet intellect to be the Editor of the Harvard Law Review?

Out-freaking-standing, Jeezus! They'd speed it up just a bit, thought, don't you think?
Kinda like when Bush kept using Springsteins' "Born in the USA--and they never listened to the lyrics!!!

Not sure on the speed-up. Anything involving the Cheney family is appropriately scored as a dirge.

Debra Burlingame came to Michigan to speak against having Guantanamo detainees shipped here. She is the founder of 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America, using her brother's death as a springboard to spokesperson status.

My gut feeling with her is that she will deny she is running for office right up until she files the paperwork.

I guess it's pretty common to have such a tragedy inspire activist politics, but the path she is following is one I don't think we need.
The big issue Keep America Safe is starting with is: GITMO PRISONERS. No wonder she was in MIchigan.

Headline: Andrew McCarthy: Transferring GITMO prisoners to US will set them free.
(wow.)

This is PRECISELY why we need very public Congressional Hearings and the attention from the WH to expose just what we have done in the name of "Freedom" and "Liberty" and "Patriots" and every other really important word you can think of.
GITMO is a problem because it is. My horror at learning that Cheney had gone down this road like a geriatric Jack Bauer with GITMO and other black prisons and torture and such was most keenly felt in the way in which it thoroughly undermined our judicial controls AND the judicial processes themselves. How would we ever arraign these alleged criminals on charges within a court of law after so flagrantly violating their human rights? Failing the ability to try them in a court of law, what would we do with them? What's the end game here?
Now, the chickens come home to roost and these "courageous patriots" suggest we should keep innocent people at GITMO forever rather than confront the consequences of our own mistakes. What a bunch of fucking heroes these bastards turn out to be. The first shot across the bow on 9/11, and they immediately capitulate to the enemy and surrender our Constitution and our virtue. Truly disgusting. I really reserve my deepest contempt for these chest-thumping, really tough guy cowards.
These crimes and their "justifications" - nay, glorification (See the Liz & Dick Cheney roadshow) - lay like a cancer in the body politic. We need to excise these and remove them as aberrations before they metastasize. Keep America Safe is the first indication that we could already be too late.

I couldn't agree more, Jeezus. It is altogether too coy of Obama to speak of 'Moving Forward' just like Peggy Noonan, for godssake. It is a pity that a majority of Americans are okay with torture, and many of those who are not are content with Obama making speeches that we will no longer torture. Congress and the White House could have just moved out of the way to allow Eric Holder do his sworn Constitutional duty to investigate. Many in Congress don't want it to happen either; their own culpability might be unearthed. Perhaps a Special Prosecutor rather than Congressional hearings.
Mary is her father's daughter; the ugly shite that comes out of her mouth is loathesome. She truly may be pre-positioning herself for if, god forbid, there is another attack on this country. They have some pretty heavy-hitters in their little group already.

Heavy hitters? They are replete with the old neo-cons like Kristol, et. al., who should be so totally marginalized as the GanG Who Couldn't Shoot Straight (and we have 4,000 dead soldiers in Iraq to prove it!) that they couldn't find an audience beyond their demented friends. Yet, the media continues pimping them as "loyal opposition" rather than wholly discredited and dangerous zealots who managed to infect government policy at the behest of Bush/Cheney.
You are particularly right that much reluctance to examine our failures rests with the fact that Congress was right there with them. The Iraq War authorization still sits as one of the most cowardly exercises of governance that I have witnessed in my lifetime.
We ignore these people and "move forward" without addressing their crimes and misdemeanors at our peril. We need to be purged of these crimes, or we will pay the consequences of them infecting our policies and our politics for all time.

In the present mood of the country and based upon past performance I would have second thoughts about putiing up anyone with the last name of Cheney. It strikes me as a recipe doomed to failure.

That the present mood can change quickly is precisely what the Cheneys and Kristols and Kagans and Krauthammers count on. Brrrrr!
