9-12ers in their own words, at their own meeting, and at a Town Hall
David Long of the Four Corners Free Press (not online) in Cortez, Co attended a July 20 meeting of the Four Corners 9-12 Project (a la Glenn Beck) at the Elks Hall. Approximately 100 people attended; the subject was health care reform. All who spoke were opposed.
Other topics were addressed at meeting. "9-12 Project member Roger Hazelwood, well-known locally for his advocacy of unfettered gun rights, stated that defeating immigration reform was crucial. "If they get it passed, then there is not going to be a two-party system in this country, because if you are an illegal who comes into this country and you're offered freebies by the Democrats, who are you going to vote for? '
Many of the comments echoed the sentiments of such right-wing luminaries as Coulter and Limbaugh and Ingram ...and the packed house was advised to visit the conservative internet sites News Max and World Net Daily for accurate, objective reporting.
"Hazelwood invited the participants to an upcoming seminar put on by the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners head Dudley Brown 'to make politicians do what you want them to do, or, failing that how to feel a lot of political heat when they don't do it. It's not going to be about playing fair--it's about winning,'"
"Toni Gurnea, Chairman of the Montezuma County Democratic Party said she attended the June meeting put on by (Senator Michael) Bennet's regional representative, Ann Brown, and was aghast at the behavior of the 9-12 group. 'Roger Hazelwood stood up--they were all nodding their heads and agreeing totally--said they opposed the hate-crimes bill because it is about gays.' She said 'Hazelwood said that he'd done research that showed that all gays are pedophiles and the bill would prevent people from defending children against sexual assaults and in fact would protect child molesters...Ann tried to explain...but they went on and on yelling. (Another staff member to Bennet) said she felt threatened.' At this point, one source reported, one of the 9-12ers assured the staff member that she didn't need to be afraid because four of them were armed and would protect her.
"'They're calling us a bunch of communists, socialists, anyone who believes in Obama, because he's a Nazi and going to take over the world.'
De facto local head of the group, Bud Garner, denied having personal knowledge of any 9-12ers carrying weapons at the June meeting (with Brown). 'I didn't frisk them, and it doesn't matter anyway. That is a perfectly legitimate function of a citizen of the United States. If anyone there was carrying a weapon, they are constitutionally authorized to do so--that's no big deal.'
Garner went on to speak for the group about the unconstitutionality of Medicare and Medicaid, and said 'If the Constitution does not specifically authorize the government to do something, it cannot do it. Nowhere in there is there (sic) authorization for the federal government to be involved in health-care issues...Social Security is a ponzi scheme, it makes Bernie Madoff look like a kindergartener.
(He addressed critically ill people being denied access to care): 'They should not expect taxpayers to help them. Where did that unfortunate situation gain the authority to steal from other people to pay for pay for their health care ...to steal from me to take care of you?
'That's what welfare is--you're stealing from one to give to another. And the vast majority don't need it if they would get off their butts and go to work.
I wonder if it's possible that the fact that Colorado is 48th in per capita spending on education has any bearing on these comments? Cortez RE-1 school district has not passed a school bond issue for decades. Thanks to David Grant Long for his coverage.--wendy.

These people broadcast outright lies on Fox News and need to be held accountable for them. When did it get to be okay to publish news and not be required to back up claims with facts? Why are these people not required to uphold basic journalistic principles? If they want to tell us that Fox news isn't news and therefore they are exempt, then they should not be able to call what they do "accurate, objective reporting". And there are still libel/slander laws that would apply to the Rushes, Anns and Lauras. Palin appears to have that down as she's continually threatening bloggers with lawsuits for "making things up" about her.
I distinctely remember Dan Rather getting canned because CBS was unable to authenticate the Bush National Guard memos (thought the information contained therein was correct). Dan Rather is still fighting that fight in a lawsuit by the way.
2005: "(CBS) Four CBS News employees, including three executives, have been ousted for their role in preparing and reporting a disputed story about President Bush’s National Guard service."

Meanwhile, Bill Maher was booted off the air the first time he made an unflattering crack about Bush and so ended up on cable. And he didn't claim to be reporting news.
Fox News should be held to the same standards as everyone else... though what standards there are left are questionable.

The standards are apparently about who holds the financial strings. Ben Stein is claiming he lost his column at the Times for being critical of Obama. I sho' do doubt that!
There are plenty of news fact check sites like factcheck.org, mediamatters.org, and now propublica.org. Too many folks really don't want the facts, as in Roger Hazelwood 9-12ers, who is really really a john bircher. He did the research man, and found that gays are all pedophiles. I suppose there ARE sites that claim research has found that; he was pre-disposed to believe it...I am predisposed to believe it is bullshit opinion, not research that he saw. Perhaps he just googled "gaus are pedophiles", got a few thousand hits, and said "Bingo!)
I will have to say someone brought him to my house years ago (hazelwood) and i ended up asking him to leave; even twenty years ago his talk creeped me out. In this chapter of the 9-12ers are a number of public school teachers, including two our own children had. They write letters to the editor claiming that "their side" is "so smart, so patriotic, so well-informed of the true facts." I metaphorically put my head on my desk and weep for us all.
Have you ever seen bill moyers when he has on kathleen hall jameison (spelling?) from the annenberg center? They research Things Politicians say, and when she debunks things Dems will say, playing fast and loose with the truth, i wince; but of course Dems are not exempt. It's just that there has been so much media and congressional ligitimization of SUCH OUTRAGEOUS LIES lately that is hard to bear.

The outrageous lies are what have gotten us here.
Wall Street just stole a few bucks from taxpayers by telling a lie and nobody even blinked. Bush took us to Iraq by telling a lie. Healthcare insurers are spending who knows how much money spreading their lies so they can continue to steal from us.
This one thing has completely undermined this entire country. And everyone knows a lie will always come to no good. This country has abandoned even the slightest inclination to observing fundamental honesty. The public trust is shot to hell. And it ain't coming back.

"This country has abandoned even the slightest inclination to observing fundamental honesty."
My god, that is chilling to read. It makes me timbers shivery...
You know how the eighth or ninth commandment (depending on the religion says, "thou shalt not bear flase witness again thy neighbor?" I wonder if folks really do interpret it to mean being exhorted not to give false testimony, like in a trial. I've heard that interpretation.
Ah, I'm just spitballin' here; it's just we supposed to be such a "relgious nation." (full disclosure: I'm not.) Why so much lying, then? Oh hell; why so much evil?
