Missouri is very much a microcosm of the US with the exception of a large Hispanic population (but that is beginning to change). I think you are right about the weathervane but that is a little disturbing, too.

The Bible Belt and just plain Red-Neckism seems to have a lot of influence. My county is strongly Republican (lately) and every Republican candidate for local office won except one and he was African-American...so they split their ticket on racial lines. Not very encouraging.

I had to wait about 15 minutes at my precinct in Jefferson City. I was voter #950 and that was before 11 AM - which is a high number. I'm usually in the 200s. They said that voters were lined up at 6 AM before the poll opened. Maybe a good sign.

There was a very young guy voting for the first time in front of me. I take that as a good sign too.

According to our right-wing newspaper the crowd at the Jeff City was 15,000 up to 18,000. I saw about a dozen chartered buses that came up from Branson & Springfield and then a bunch of school buses. These are probably double-dippers who can't get enough of Sarah since she was down there just last week. Why would anyone want to endure that twice? (Please step away from the idiot)

Do you think that her name is really Paling but she dropped the 'g'?

The infomercial was the icing on the cake for me. I can remember clear back to the Adlai Stevenson vs. Ike campaign in 1956 (just barely!) and I don't think I've ever seen a campaign as cool and coordinated as Obama's. Apart from the huge bankroll, I don't know if it has been luck, timing, genius or poor performance by McCain that helped bring it all together. A huge pile of money is not the answer unless you know how to use it. It will take a while for the experts to get this campaign analyzed and fully appreciated. Meanwhile...enjoy.

Missouri will be interesting to watch but it might be all over before our votes are counted. The bible-thumpers will turn out in droves in Springfield (the land of Ashcroft and the Blunts). I would expect to see thousands of people trying to vote in St. Louis when the polls close at 7 PM and there will be the usual pushing and shoving about closing the polls. Kansas City already has ACORN complaints so that could be interesting, too. St. Louis, Kansas City and Columbia should go for Obama but McCain owns much of the rest of the state. The suburbs often go Republican but that might be where we see the real struggle. If McCain can't carry the suburbs he has no hope. We have a fair and Democratic Secretary of State who will be on top of the voting process. The Governor's race looks like it will easily go to the Democrats (Jay Nixon) but I live in a "red" area and can't gauge that race very well except that I'm seeing a lot of Nixon signs.

Palin has some kind of draw for the righteous bible-thumpers and spaced-out culture warriors. I don't know what it is but she drew 20% even when Huckabee was one of the options. When McCain goes down in flames (oops...sorry) she will have a voice in the GOP and I'm sure she will use it.

I think the future is too murky all around -- economy will have a huge impact and we still might have something less than a victory in Afghanistan. Somebody might come out from a rock we don't even see now. How many were seriously thinking about Obama four years ago?
