Week of November 2, 2008 - November 8, 2008

Are we absolutely sure Obama won?

Missouri doesn't want to jump to any premature conclusions. We are the "Show-me" state, after all. I've long considered the "bellweather" status as just a flike.  The race is very close and I guess there could be a recount. McCain is leading Obama by about 5,000 votes and there are some 7,000 provisional ballots that still need to be counted. Most of these are likely to be Democratic voters based on geography...but these voters were aparently too befuddled to find their way to the right polling place. If they went to the wrong polling place the vote won't be counted even if they were otherwise qualified. It takes a while to figure out who is qualified and why they were given a provisional ballot. And at this point, who cares anyway.

Call me crazy but...

I guess it is really none of my business who the Connecticut voters want to represent them in the Senate. Joe Leiberman is just a sorry sack of shit no matter how you kick it but I'd like a few days just to reflect and enjoy the idea that there is no longer going to be a single Republican serving in Congress from New England. Kick the SOB out next year sometime but lets at least start the new year with an all blue New England. Send Joe to an undisclosed location for six months. No one will miss him.

Election Withdrawl

Is ther some sort of 12-step support progrqam for election junkies? This is like post-holiday depression setting in. Everyone seems to be in slow motion. I can't stop yawning. Even my cat is exhausted. No phone calls. No more infuriating TV commercials -- at least not the political ones. I've stopped yelling at the TV.

I have to fly cross-country in a couple days..... I guess I should pack a suitcase or something.  I wonder if I have a suitcase....

No longer a nation of victims

This election is certainly a repudiation of George Bush and his regime and the many blunders under his watch. It is also a rejection of John McCain and his terrible choice of a running mate and his terrible choice of a campaign strategy. Ever since September 11, 2001 Bush has managed to keep us believing that we were a nation of victims. It was OK for him to infringe our rights and impose unconstitutional restrictions because we were helpless victims and he was our protector.  I don't know whether McCain would have embraced the Bush policies but I do think he would have continued keeping us in our role as victims. He was clearly going down that path with his campaign's fear tactics. But even victims rise up eventually. The financial meltdown was the last straw.  Obama's approach was to treat us like responsible adults who were smart enough to make our own choice for our future. He presented himself as a rational and reasonable person and surpassed McCain in most of the important leadership qualities.  I think this election is so amazing and special on so many levels but it marks the end of our bondage as victims.

Palin in Jefferson City @ 1 PM

Palin will appear at 1 PM on the state capitol grounds. One must have a ticket to attend but they are bussing people in from Branson. Everybody likes a good show. Hank Williams Jr. is her sidekick for the appearance.

Swill Alert - National Republican Trust

The party faithful are lapping up the latest swill spewed out by the National Republican Trust PAC. Reverand Wright is the topic of the ad that just appeared on my TV but there are others dealing with immigration. Illegal immigration seems to be their big obsession. I can't imagine that being a big traction issue here. There doesn't seem to be anything new....just the same old stuff on Obama and Rev. Wright. I think I recall McCain saying that the Rev. was off limits.

The GOP hard cores are the only ones who thrive on this vile stuff. This PAC seems to be well funded but is apparently targeting swing states only in the last few days.

Republicans are such poor losers. This is the kind of crap that poisons their minds. They never got over Bill Clinton beating GHWB.  Obama needs a really big win.

Bad Penny -- here comes Palin again

Sarah Palin and Hank Williams, Jr. will show up tomorrow for a rally in Jefferson City, MO. I wonder who will be responsible for the crowd....Sarah or Hank. I'm sure a bunch of people will be there for Palin considering the pent-up angst among the local GOPers. They have to see that the future is turning toward the Democrats and they don't like it. A lot of the yahoos just want to eat her up....sort of trailer-trash made good. Then the bible-thumpers will be there -- she is sort of a madonna figure for them. Hell, this is sounding like a pretty good show...I might just have to check it out myself.
