Global Warming Is Just Us Killing Ourselves

Global Warming seems to be the popularly excepted term to use when discussing the current problem that our environment is experiencing. I believe the term is inappropriate in it's effort to clearly describe the problem. The term Global Warming seems to suggest that the world and it's environment is , in some way , in trouble. It's not real because the world is in no trouble at all; but we human beings are.

I was born in 1949 in Minnesota. I have vivid memories of the winters of my childhood. In Minnesota we played baseball , football , and hockey. Yes even the Black guys played hockey. I did not play basketball until I was in the Navy and over the age of eighteen. I do not ever remember a winter where we were not able to skate. Yes I played hockey at Oxford playground in St. Paul , Minnesota and we skated and played outside; their where no inside hockey rinks in my day. I can remember many a day when the cold would bring tears to your eyes. In more then a general sense outside hockey is no longer played in Minnesota because of the warmer weather. I don't need to be told by any expert that we have a change in our environment. You don't have to be a so called expert to except that our environment is changing for the worse.

I don't know what Rick Warren and his "saddlebacks" would think of this in the grand scheme of things. My opinion is that they feel no matter what their "rapture" is going to save them in the end. My opinion is that we are going to have to suffer the consequences for the poisoning of the air , land , and water that we need to live and thrive in this environment. We are only killing ourselves; the world will just be fine in whatever state it's in after were gone. The rapture is not going to happen in the magical form that some people think it will.

You can set off all of the atomic devices in the world and the world would still go on. If we could multiply the releasing of Greenhouse Gases by a thousand the world would still be fine. We could poison all of the water , land , and air in our whole environment and the world would still be fine and go on. It's just a revelation of our human vanity when we actually talk in terms that we could even come near , in any way , of possibly being able to destroy the world. We only have the power to destroy ourselves and that's it.

So I'm confident because I would rather our world go on without us. We have been the problem and not our beautiful world. And I would rather we be gone and the world can prepare itself for the next effort at life that would surely follow our departure. It doesn't take a space scientist to except that we are not the first and only form of life on earth. We now know that life forms were here long before us; we have their bones.

People are the only species on the face of the earth who can say one thing and do another! People are the only species on earth who can say one thing and do another! And because of that we tend to re-create reality. We tend to morph the truth and make the situation work for just us , in our minds , no matter what the truth really is or what the consequences really are. Because of this people actually have the ability to lie and to ultimately believe these same lies.

As people it is also my believe that we are the only species that have the habit of fouling wherever we live. We seem to have the DNA makeup in us that drives us to destroy our own environment. And because of our proclivity to be able to lie to ourselves we recreate this problem and talk about it in terms like we aren't the problem. If we met the problem and it was us would we really do anything about it?

Roseanne Barr said on a recent TV appearance that she is glad she is the age she is. She went on to talk about how she truly can see how bad things are getting in the world and how many problems we have truly caused for ourselves. Roseanne said that she was at an age whereby she realized she wouldn't be here much longer. And she went on to talk about how she wouldn't want to be here under the current and depressing world circumstances. It was clear that Roseanne felt that it was us , as people , that have caused our current environmental calamity. So like Roseanne I too am happy that I won't be here but I'm saddened and concerned about my children and their children and their children and their children and you get the point.

It just seems that we do not posses the will to save ourselves. And I believe the world is going to treat us like the plague we have truly been to it. And it will simply make us disappear and just move on. And we will be just a footnote in the ongoing history of our world. Nature and the natural way are the true and most powerful element in this equation. Now if you want to call that God I don't care. As long as you realize what the ultimate power is. It is not us.

This is an important and insightful post. I heartily recommend it! I hope that it gets the attention it deserves. I have found, however, that even on a site where the average person is far more aware and interested in environmental issues, that there's not a whole lot of interest and/or enthusiasm for this particular subject.

You've got 10 or so years on me, but I remember quite vividly what the climate was like when I was growing up and it clearly has changed dramatically. Anyone who has been paying the slightest attention has noticed this particularly in the past 10-15 years. When you consider the implications of literally causing the weather pattern to change and what it will take to reverse that change is both daunting and frightening.

Not long before he died, I saw an interview with Kurt Vonnegut on television. I forget what program, but it was a serious and thoughtful interview mainly focused on the idiotic war in Iraq. But during the interview Vonnegut stated flatly that he thought we (the human race) were a virus making the planet sick, but that as a living organism with a healthy immune system, earth was changing itself to kill us off so that planet could remain healthy. He concluded it was the only cure for us because humanity could not keep from causing all the harm to itself and the planet. That metaphor stuck with me obviously, but I think in many ways it is accurate. Your post takes a similar view and it's hard to dispute.

I have one quibble and that is that we have more than the power to destroy ourselves which makes global warming the megaissue it is. If it were only our own demise it would still be an issue, but not quite as profound in my opinion. We have the power to destroy life on earth as we know it and as it has occured naturally for eons. This is an issue far more serious than just us. I agree that the earth will go on in some form. But from a moral standpoint and not just an egoistical human standpoint we simply do not have the right to destroy life as we know it for one thing. And for another, we have an obligation to our posterity to preserve the earth so that they may experience life here and the marvelous wonders it holds.

You write that humans are the only animal capable of essentially denying reality. That may be. We are also the only species that has the combined capabilities of self awareness, rational thought, and the ability to adapt creatively in a vast range of circumstances. If there are other beings on earth that have this same capability as we do I am unaware of them. Perhaps there are others elsewhere in the galaxy or universe at large that have this capability, but for our purposes I think it in our best interest to assume there are no others elsewhere either. Therefore, those of us humans who are not completely consumed with themselves and their own immediate world of wants and needs are morally obligated to do whatever is necessary to preserve the earth on behalf of all life as we know it. We simply do not have the luxury to take the Scarlett O'Hara option of thinking about that tomorrow. We must think and act right away to preserve the magnificent environment that has spawned the beauty of life on earth. This assumes that the earth intinsically made choices far superior to any we may make for life on earth and that it is not our right or our place to alter that to the point of making the planet uninhabitable for the many life forms we know depend upon the climate as it is. Let nature itself change the climate as it sees fit, but it is not humanity's place to make the earth bend to it's will or actions to the point of altering the very existence of the balance of life and resources the earth provides.

Yes, you are right, should we fail in our obligation to the future life on earth as we have known it the planet will endure. But it seems to me anyone with even the slightest appreciation for the magnificence of life in this unique and stunning environment ought to be able to understand that over and above humanity, the rest of it is far too precious to allow ourselves to squander our inheritance and ruin the future itself. It would be the ultimate crime against humanity and nature if we fail to correct our destructive actions.

Right now, it seems to me we are in the same state of human denial that most smokers deal with. They know that smoking is far too dangerous to their health to continue, but because they are addicted and it isn't literally causing them immediate harm and/or killing them in the now, they put off trying to stop smoking thinking that they will before it is too late. They rationalize the unnecessary delay in quitting with a million plausible reasons, but the truth is they fail to stop because they weren't sufficiently committed to stopping. For all too many people, they make the mistake of raiontalizing too long and rolling the dice one time too many times and then end up with heart, lung, arterial and other wretched diseases that end up killing them. Some kill quickly like heart attack. Others kill slowly and painfully like emphysema. I would think global warming is more akin to emphysema which is an ugly and terrifying way to go.

Global warming, as we know, is literally caused by our the smoking habit of the industrial societies of the world: the US being the heaviest and most addicted smoker of them all per capita. It's time we got serious about an effective smoking cessation program before it is too late. The sole obstcle is whether or not we are really committed to doing what we need to do to stop killing ourselves and our incomparably planet.

Well I had no trouble recommending Viper but Oleeb If you could recommend comments I would also recommend this. Two good blogs in a row.

user-pic

Oleeb. So well written; much better then me. I wrote about the reality of our current situation. It has nothing to do with what's possible. And if we responded to our more enlightened mind we would then have no problems dealing with keeping our world and us alive. And we still have a chance , now , to do what we need to do to save ourselves. But we must become far more enlightened.

user-pic

beautifully put, both of you.

user-pic

Amen! Amen!!!

user-pic

Fine response. I too wish I could quit smoking. But I think you give too much credit to humans.

You imply that the Earth is responding to us, I think it is just responding to physics.

As the ice melts off, the shift in water-weight from the top will shift the wobble of the poles.

What happens then?

Well first you'd have to understand wobble physics and then hypothesize it's impact on climate, and that science hasn't even been discovered.

We are rolling many dice for which the outcome can't be predicted.

Initial observations say that unstable weather is the norm, which can make sustainable farming a bit dicey.

So from the Earth perspective, "you shake it all about" and cut the populations by 75 to 99 percent and settle back down.

Earth doesn't mean to do it, Physics just happens.

Thank you for the funeral dirge. Last Thanksgiving I was having some work done outside and the contractor brought a Bobcat to move some pavement.

I interupted him and asked him to dig a pond. A week later I had a 100 foot pond 8 feet deep. Today it is 3/4 filled, and I'm going to stock bullfrogs and mosquito fish to start. Then sunfish and bass.

I am thinking of putting in a solar panel water pump so if the fires come as they have in other places, I can float in my pond and try and save my little tree stand.

Pretty pathetic, I know. This year I am adding to the fruit trees and also putting in all kinds of berry and grapevines.

I sure hope people laugh at me 20 years from now when the climate has stabalized and it was all for nought.

But just imagine for a minute if this pond and its surrounding fruits and berries were the only source in this area.

Maybe I should put up a fence, and buy a gun or two. I won't give up just yet.

user-pic

Just imagine that thousands of people are doing things like what you described all over our world. Now just imagine how much more worse things would be if it wasn't for efforts like you and others are making. Let's hope you don't need the gun.

user-pic

If you still actually believe in the global warming hoax, you're in a rapidly, rapidly shrinking minority. Sorry.

user-pic

And do make sure to watch out that you don't get too close to the edge of the earth. The sea monsters live out near the edge and if you make it past them, you can fall off if you're not careful!

user-pic

Problem is, this is shaping up to be one of the coldest winters in history.

You've got to do some heavy duty dreaming to deny that one!!!!!

user-pic

And your point is what? That you know absolutely nothing about this topic and are proud of your Rushbo-like ignorance? Well done in that event!

user-pic

btw, who is this spriche guy (- I'm new here)? Is he the local crazy uncle or something? he's hilarious.

user-pic

He keeps changing his name after being banned for being such an idiotic schmuck. He used to be spric, but I think it's pretty clear the s is out of place.

user-pic

It was renaye, too. The cute little trollie girly-mon.

Comic relief is always a good thing.

=D

user-pic

first time I've seen one of these troll thingees up close. fascinating. Gotta ask the guys in the zoology department if they study these things.

user-pic

do you feed him...?

user-pic

Some ignore. Some argue. Some do strategic hit and run.

user-pic

reminds me of my ex-girlfriend's chihuahua.

user-pic

You're lucky you missed the blue "taoist symbol" - now it's a blue landscape!

user-pic

Maybe your the example I need on how we can lie to ourselves and believe just whatever the hell we want. Reality always kicks you right in the ass. Dream on spriche. Thank you.

user-pic

Don't take it seriously. It obviously hasn't looked at any actual scientific reports. Not even Bushies much messed with ones.

It's a clown. Kinda like Pirate pete with a different sort of agenda.

=D

Look at trends in the polls worldwide. Most don't believe that shit anymore. A moon walking astronaut got on board the other day.

The only global warming hoax adherents left are the socialist leaders in government, the media, climatologists whose income depends on government grants, and fringe lunatic KoolAid drinkers.

To which group do YOU belong???

user-pic

The only global warming hoax deniers left are the most right-wing conservative leaders in government, the right-wing media, "climatologists" whose income depends on grants from ultra-conservative foundations, and fringe lunatic KoolAid drinkers.

To which group do YOU belong???

user-pic

Foiled by cut and paste! I meant to say:

The only global warming deniers left . . .

user-pic

ps - spricky - you so krayzeee : : :

user-pic

Toad,

You left out the majority of the general public, non aligned climatologists, and everyone with any sense.

Look, the hoax is going down the tubes. Recent and best data indicate we're amid a cooling trend.

That's why the global warming hoax's handlers have changed the language to 'climate change' hoax. This is intended to be a transition hoax to 'global cooling' hoax if such a hoax proves to be useful in achieving their Marxist designs on the world!!!!

user-pic

I belong to the GOLF all Winter club. We used to play hockey on the frozen lakes, now we shoot our best rounds in the cool winter marshiness.

My best rounds were Dec 28th and Jan 2nd this mid-winter outing, but I do have to admit, it has been a bit wintry this season. I forgot how much I enjoy ice skating.

user-pic

We're talking about the 'globe' here. You can find anecdotal evidence somewhere to support any argument given the entire 'globe'. They're not talking about your back yard 'warming'.

user-pic

Global warming isn't actually going to kill anyone directly, although increased likelyhood of hurricanes would not be fun. If sea levels rise a few feet, it will be bad, and people will need to move, but it wouldn't kill anyone, much less everyone.

user-pic

If the entire ice cap on the arctic sea melts, the sea level won't rise a millionth of a micron. May even drop as sublimation is a slower process than evaporation!!!

Problem for the global warming hoaxers, total water impounded in polar regions as ice is increasing!!!

user-pic

I've been racking my brain trying to place you and I finally figured it out. You're the guy from Monty Python with the handkerchief on his head who says: "I like banging two bricks togeda." When do they put you back in the instution where you belong?

user-pic

Aw,, any time now. I was out on a weekend pass. Went off my meds, you know?

user-pic

We are going to make little progress in combating the problem if we continue to call it "Global warming". It is NOT Global warming; it is POLAR warming, causing the ice caps to melt and change the temperature and salinity of the oceanic currents.

It's not necessary to understand the mechanism to know we have a problem. Calling it by its correct name is a start in getting the skeptics on board.

user-pic

What you say is true, but it is far more than polar warming. The average elevated temps are causing weather patterns to change. The process of deforestation has already begun in a number of areas, like the American midwest, which is how deserts are born. It is becoming notably drier in the southwest leading to massive fires. Rising temps are also causing migration of insect and other life forms that are changing the flora and fauna of whole regions and none of it is beneficial. The ice caps are only the beginning.

user-pic

There has been some minor glacial loss in the northern hemisphere. But the Antarctic ice cap is accreting at a greater rate than the Arctic is melting!!!

One of the most hillarious examples of 'global warming' KoolAid drinking that comes to my mind is the CBS weeklong thingie they did on 'global warming'.

One of the female news actors actually climbed up Kilimanjaro and pointed out with photos from thirty years ago the ice cap on the mountain had receded dramatically due to melting!

The temperature on that thing never gets to melting. The ice loss was due to sublimation. There just hasn't been enough precipitation to maintain it at it's 30 year ago level!!

Any time a major network is so drunk on KoolAid they script one of those stupid bitches with such an idiotic statement it's certain they're in bed with the Marxist global warming agenda.

user-pic
The temperature on that thing never gets to melting. The ice loss was due to sublimation. There just hasn't been enough precipitation to maintain it at it's 30 year ago level!!

Reduction of precipitation, increased average temperature, reduced average humidity, all due to climactic shift. All result not in "melting" but increased rate of sublimation.

You include just enough "detail" to sound convincing in conversation. Sublimation rate is dependent on temperature and humidity. for some popular examples, look into your home freezer. The ice doesn't melt but it's also frost-free.

I believe you are smart enough to know this stuff and are smart enough to know that most ordinary readers don't get that far into chemistry and thermodynamics.

It's intellectually dishonest and should not rate the time it takes to argue against your inadequate, fake and dishonest "arguments".

It is worth the time however to allow other readers to see actual logic to refute your false "arguments".

When I logged onto aol the other day there was a picture of a bright light in the sky over Texas. The local weather board, and the military both said they did not know what caused the phenomenon. There was a question and you could vote on the answer:

Do you think this is falling space debris?

1. Yes
2. No
3. Not sure

I was amazed that people could have an opinion on something they knew absolutely nothing about, based on a picture, and so I clicked on "not sure" to find out what the "survey" showed. By the time I did this, over 32,000 people had taken the survey, and more than 19,000 of them thought that the light in the picture was from falling space debris. Around 5,000 had the opinion that it was NOT due to debris, and the remaining 7,000 plus of us humbly had not formed an opinion.

Those who call this observed and tested phenomenon a hoax just don't want it to be true, and so they have an "opinion" based on their ideology. They find one or two crackpot "experts" like George Will, who pull statistics out of their asses and run with them.

There are many things I have learned in my life that I didn't want to be true, but sometimes it just isn't about what a person (or a political party) wants.

OK, TPM crowd, what is your opinion of the light in Texas? Although I am officially "not sure" I kinda think it is a nuke that Cheney sent to take out W, but it just hit Dick's friend in the face.

user-pic

PS, Viper, you write eloquently; great post, and oleeb; great response!

user-pic

Thank you CVille Dem. The TPM bloggers are a very talanted bunch. I'm just trying to keep up.
