I continue to be amazed at how all these southerners, and conservatives in blue states, continue to vote against their own best interests by electing Republicans year after year.  Here in Kentucky, our senators are a great example.  Mitch McConnell would sell his own mother for money and power, and Jim Bunning requires a team of specialists just to appear to know what is going on.  Whenever he goes off script, which is less and less often, his dementia becomes readily apparent.  In my congressional district, Hal Rogers never is even opposed for re-election.  He's famous for sending pork back here, which never seems to help anyone but his contributors.  And, it leads to absurdities like the State Department's center for processing the green card lottery and a call-in customer service center for the State Department in the next town over.

Any ideas out there on why this is so?  I'm reading "Deer Hunting with Jesus" by Joe Bageant, which helps, but what do others think?
