W's Note to Obama
Per Eric Kleefeld's story on the TPMDC page, Bush left a note for Obama in the Oval Office (cleverly addressed "To #44, From #43"). Reports that the note was written in crayon on SpongeBob stationery stained with PB&J cannot be substantiated. However, I have a contact in the administration who has revealed to me the contents of the note, reproduced below.
Dear Barracks,
A few points for U, don't tell anybody else -
1) I may have broke some stuff, sorry!
2) Key to dungin is over the mantle.
3) If you find any likker bottles, not mine.
4) Ask NSA about the Martians.
Have a awesome time! The big screen in the movie room is real cool, and you can watch TV on it 2!
W

Shouldn't that be NASA in point 4?

No, you lump - I meant NSA (National Security Agency)! But actually, NASA would work just as well, given the topic!

Please excuse - talking to myself!
January 21, 2009 3:22 PM | Reply | Permalink
Here's a little story about "talking to myself." When I was teaching 3rd grade, lo many decades ago, we were in a special "Follow-Through" program directed by the Bank Street School of Education in NY. Every so often they'd send researchers or monitors in to observe and maybe even code whatever they were paying attention to. Well, here came this data collector - with her pages for coding things. I actually had no idea what she was there for, but was used to strangers just wandering in and strolling around.
Well, I stumped her! I didn't mean to. But every few minutes or seconds she had to note on her papers what kind of talking was going on in the classroom, teacher to students or student to student, etc. Well.... it seems I was talking to myself - and she had no category for that!
It was the first time I noticed that sometimes I talk out loud to myself.
So, I think tt, that you should grace your blogs (or ours) with more of these conversations. Not less.

When Obama turned the paper over, he saw this, scrawled in red crayon.
"Oh, a few more things...
5) I left the good stuff in the Resolute Desk, top right drawer. Burn one!
G) If you find any extra copies of the Const...Consti...y'know, that Billa Rights thingy...I left Dick's shredder in the Green Room.
VIII) Sorry 'bout the seat cushion on this chair. All them beer farts ain't good fer leather.
10) You weren't serious when you told me not to leave the country, right?"

To TPM readers:
TT/Putty are the same poster. It's intellectually dishonest for this poster to try to generate a narrative on his own blog in this manner. Of course, TT/Putty made a mistake above and forgot to change IDs in this conversation.

Oh, lighten up! The whole post was a joke, and so was the exchange between my avatars (turned out to be a joke in another sense because I screwed it up). I have never created an exchange between the two except once or twice in joke situations, and would never do so in anything but a humorous thread (lame comic/straight man exchange).

TT/Putty:
It's very clear what TPM thinks of multiple IDs (e.g. not to have them).
Of course, your multiple ID's can always allow an impression of a mob shouting down a point of view you don't like, which is why such a thing is discouraged. And, of course, that's why you use them.

CT, I replied to a comment you made here. (since it has fallen off the board)

CT, if you keep attributing evil motives to me, I will have to politely ask you to bite me. Please don't presume that you know my internal processes or motivations. I have not used Putty as a "mob" accomplice.
Putty is my one and only alternate identity. I created him on the spur of the moment one day, in a sort of foolish but fun experiment. He is making me feel a bit schizy lately, so I am planning to retire him soon. In the interest of being a good neighbor, if I bring him out of retirement or create another identity, I will inform everyone via a post, and add a note on the appropriate profile.

As you can see from my comment above, it's clear that TPM disapproves of multiple IDs.
There you have it. That is from the official side of TPM which really leaves you little room to continue to persist with your charade.

OK - bite me ! Did you even read what I said? Putty is retiring. But you can't stop lecturing me.
Since you evidently feel no compunction about critiquing my character up one side and down the other, I have a question and an observation for you regarding your behavior. Why do you have to act so goddamn haughty all the time? It's strictly "my way or the highway" with you. There are a lot of people here (including me) who would enjoy engaging in discussion with you if you didn't constantly deride and dismiss those you are addressing.

Instead of admitting your error, you try to cover via invective at me.
First, you said you were planning on retiring Putty soon.
Second, you said you might bring out other characters in the future.
Neither of these points is valid under the TPM policy as stated.
Finally, I should note that the only reason were you forced to retire Putty is that you mistakenly blew your own cover. There is no change in your attitude (as evidenced by points 1 and 2 above), merely that you got caught.
Had GWB offered these types of arguments, you would have been leading the charge how disingenuous they are.

Keep the lectures coming, headmaster. You have obviously made up your mind about me, so I wish you well and will try to avoid engaging with you.

I have not made up my mind about "you" or your posts.
I am merely pointing out inconsistencies in your behavior to expected TPM decorum.

I think TT/Putty IS funny and unless Josh decides one of them has to go, I'm open to both of them. I enjoy having some humor around the serious politics.
January 22, 2009 1:39 PM | Reply | Permalink
If you noticed in my comment above, TPM has explicitly and officially said they frown on such things.
It's not humorous unless the ID is clearly just a goof (there were some like that in the past). Putty, however, has engaged in serious conversation and made invectives at various posters. This is not like idiotic, MonicaL and others have been in the past (perhaps before your time).
There's a reason why TPM doesn't want these types of IDs here: it derails honest intellectual debate.

January 22, 2009 2:18 PM | Reply | Permalink
TT/Putty never put them out in the open until he made a mistake (twice). Interestingly, people here didn't take kindly to politicians being forgiven on issues simply because they were caught.
Your ethical point of view must be independent of the perpetrator if it is to have any validity.

Who elected you TPM policeman, ct?
January 22, 2009 5:51 PM | Reply | Permalink
My point is more subtle.
What we see here is the tendency for humans to want to have tyranny of the majority. If a "popular" person does something it is brought under a different set of standards than someone else.
Keep this in mind when some politician isn't looking after your (minority) interests. (Minority being defined as not in the mainstream - regardless of the number of people involved.) It's because you aren't "popular" to that politician.
There is a consistency issue here that people need to reflect upon.

OK, one final comment from me here. I remember that July discussion of multiple identities very well, having been part of it. The comment from Lila Shapiro that you linked to says this: "We here at TPM ask that you all maintain single, consistent identities."
That is not a law, that is not a regulation, and that is not a prohibition. There was also nothing in that thread resembling a community consensus on the ethics of having multiple IDs. As you said, they (TPM) frown on it. They also frown on profanity and insults, but they still happen. So it goes in a lively online community, especially one with anti-authoritarian leanings. I am sure I am not the only person here with multiple IDs, and I did not employ mine for evil purposes. Good night, and good luck.

The two classic excuses:
a) everyone else does it
b) I meant no harm
Everyone should remember this episode when they hear the same excuses from politicians they don't like.
By the way, I don't believe the TPM community is anti-authority leanings -- that's literally an anarchist view and those with anarchist views hardly support the Democratic party which is as owned by the wealthy as the GOP. But that's another topic for another blog.
