Op-ed targets the Hillary-hating media
Naming names, former official during the Bill Clinton administration and foreign policy expert David Rothkopf, condemns the media's anti-Hillary obsession.
Sunday, August 23, 2009When it comes to Hillary Rodham Clinton, we're missing the forest for the pantsuits.
Clinton is not the first celebrity to become the nation's top diplomat -- that honor goes to her most distant predecessor, Thomas Jefferson, who by the time he took office was one of the most famous and gossiped-about men in America -- but she may be the biggest. And during her first seven months in office, the former first lady, erstwhile presidential candidate and eternal lightning rod has drawn more attention for her moods, looks, outtakes and (of course) relationship with her husband than for, well, her work revamping the nation's foreign policy.
Even venerable publications -- such as one to which I regularly contribute, Foreign Policy -- have woven into their all-Hillary-all-the-time coverage odd discussions of Clinton's handbag and scarf choices. Daily Beast editor Tina Brown, while depicting herself as a Clinton supporter, has been scathing and small-minded in discussing such things as Clinton's weight and hair, while her "defense" of Hillary in her essay "Obama's Other Wife" was as sexist as the title suggests.
Indeed, sexism has followed Clinton from the campaign trail to Foggy Bottom, as seen most recently in the posturing outrage surrounding the exchange in Congo when Clinton reacted with understandable frustration to the now-infamous question regarding her husband's views. Major media outlets have joined the gossipfest, whether the New York Times, which covered Clinton's first big policy speech by discussing whether she was in or out with the White House, or The Washington Post, where a couple of reporters mused about whether a brew called Mad Bitch would be the beer of choice for the secretary of state.

I concur with Rothkopf's message.
What I found disturbing were the number of comments referencing this article which contained more than a few sexist based remarks based solely on her appearance, as perceived by the commentator (weight, wardrobe, etc.). And, for those who assign any value to the Tina Brown's and her ilk, are truly insulting all women. I have an idea for a scarf I'd like to share with them!
The negatives assigned were mostly mired in sexism, party affiliation and the 'history of Bill's wife'.
I have yet to know a chauvinist who is not a bigot.
And I am always appalled at how many choose to comment on issues without any applying any factual data. (I know, I should be used to those who choose to be ignorant proving it by their verbal and written messages.)
Hillary deserved this hat tip for her abilities and performance as SOS. She is one smart, strong and focused woman who is, in my opinion, doin' her job well and with verve.
Thanks for this. Rec'd.

I'm repressing. I'm trying (but not too hard) to remember the name of the New York Times columnist who gored Al Gore for wearing brown suits and putting on weight. She's very high on my list of people the world won't miss when the pen stops scribbling.
(Actually I think I'm trying very hard not to remember her name.)

I consider the source of these inane and disrespectful comments.
(A brisk breeze would knock over Tina and her anerexic, brittle, surgically enhanced being - but not as much as a strong intellect! Meow.)
Hope all is well amike, always a great pleasure!

Ditto, Aunt Sam. And thanks for not reminding me of that person's name. Repression is a wonderful thing sometimes. I'm well, off to school in 11 minutes for the Freshman Day of Service (and to polish up some syllabi I'm behind upon).
My rant of the day? The Throwaway (a.k.a.) the Takeaway, critiquing the President's choice of vacation spot with a fair and impartial observer from the American Enterprise Institute. Oh well, it wakes me up. Have a good day. I'll try and sneak over here later.

The issue is whether the distraction of her appearance is hampering her job performance!
I think not---she is the same 'wonk' and less than able diplomat that she has always been. Smartly, due to her or the President, she has a cache of very able and experienced envoys taking up the slack...This is good for the Nation because there is no doubt her 'celebrity' will claim the limelight --leaving the real diplomats free to do the job!
She put herself in the position of defending her errant husband and stood by her man---long after other women might have gone on their own...Now , she has her own 'portfolio' given her by Obama. Let us give her the benefit of growing into the job... or not---irrespective of her appearance! Chaulk the sexism up to her former choices and let her start where she stands!

Excuse me. 'Chaulk the sexism up to her former choices........'
I think not! How about we chalk (correct sp.) to ignorant sexists! Geez.

What most bothers me about all of the libelous notions which the media propagates isn't what they are selling. It is the number of Americans who are looking to be so sold.
