Back from vacation, Maureen Dowd trashes the Clintons

Maureen Dowd is back from a five-week vacation, and in her first piece the New York Times columnist comes out swinging at the Clintons, accusing the couple of being “still bitter” at Kennedy for endorsing Obama, without explaining the reasons behind her assessment.

In contradiction to Dowd’s characterization, a New York Daily News report dated December 17 and written by three staff writers quotes a source saying that Hillary told her supporters to “stop trashing Caroline Kennedy”. Furthermore, the article adds:

The supporters who said anything critical were rebuked,” one source said.

Even a source close to Kennedy agreed: “the criticism of her is not coming from Hillary”.

Welcome back.

Can we all say so what. Dowd is a opinion piece writer, don't like her opinions don't read. She has made it perfectly clear she is not a fan of the Clintons, that's her opinion. Shared by some not shared by many many others. Rather than get worked up about it ignore it.

But shouldn't she state why she believes the Clintons are "still bitter" at Caroline Kennedy?

Maureen Dowd is a one-trick pony. She wouldn't know how to write a column if she couldn't use it to trash the Clintons. Doesn't matter if they didn't do anything worthy of trashing; MoDo will fantasize something.

I don't know....when I read Dowd's column I read it that she was accusing the Clintons' "camp" as being bitter - not the Clintons themselves. I guess it's a matter of perception.

In addition, Dowd never accuses the Clintons of trashing Kennedy as you imply - she specifically says it's those in her "camp". I take "camp" to mean "supporters". Based on some of the comments I've seen on this site by Clinton supporters, I don't see how you can deny that is happening.

Either way, I think you're making way too big a deal of this. It was one sentence in a column. I'm no Dowd fan, but you're making it seem like her whole column is devoted to trashing the Clintons which just isn't true.

MoDowd's argument defeats itself. It only rallies people who hate the Clintons as much as she does. And by personally vouching that "she knows" Caroline, one is left to wonder at why Caroline Kennedy whom I've always thought of as a fairly decent benevolent socialite would ever associate with someone so mean girl-ish as Maureen Dowd.

Add to that Caroline's snippy remarks about women's magazines to the NYT reporters for deigning to ask why she decided to run for office and the result is not a positive one. Never mind that Dowd hammered Palin's lack of experience (even though she was mayor and governor) and has not one positive substantive thing to say about any work Caroline has done that makes her fit to be Senator.

It's just an endorsement based on personality and being in the same circles of society. A personal endorsement from Maureen Dowd. I'm sure even Caroline Kennedy has enough PR savvy to say thanks but no thanks on that one. She's not helping!

And with this inaccurate, "snippy" remark, you prove that you're not any better than Dowd.

Personality politics is so lame.

I've have had a lot of insults thrown my way at TPM, but few more offensive than the claim that I am not better than Maureen Dowd. She's an evil, mean-spirited person who attacks people personally rather than addressing substantive issues. I didn't say anything bad about Caroline Kennedy. I said Caroline Kennedy's response did not leave a positive impression... and it didn't. It came off as dismissive and entitled and imperious about a questions that literally everyone gets asked. Sarah palin got asked that question too - can you imagine if she responded similarly?

Caroline Kennedy's approval ratings are tanking not because of Hillary or Hillary supporters, but because the more NYers are exposed to Caroline Kennedy the more convinced they are she is not the best person for the job. Nothing personal at all. I totally agree that personality politics is lame which is why I think Caroline Kennedy should not be chosen as Senator.
