Rumors are the fuel that powers TPM

At least one member has urged readers to stop placing too much credibility on rumors and "speculation" about Obama's transition team and the steps he might take once he becomes President:

"Kerry for Secretary of State/Kerry says he's talked to nobody.  Gitmo will close immediately/Obama may condone some torture.  He's hiring too many Clinton people/He needs to keep more Bush people. He wants Lieberman to stay/he secretly wants hin out."

I agree with the member but warn him and you all that rumors will not go away.

Consider this post by TPM founder Josh Marshall, for example, pimping a rumor spread by Fox News' Carl Cameron, to the effect that Sarah Palin could not tell whether Africa was a country or a continent. After admitting in a disclaimer that Cameron is a "sometimes fabulist", Marshall went on to ask, "how can you not watch?" referring to the rumor.

So it's not about whether a claim can be confirmed; or about the credibility of the sources. If it's juicy, blog it!

Cameron's source was later unmasked as a lying fraud. His name? Martin Eisenstadt. The problem? "Martin Eisenstadt doesn't exist," reports today the New York Times. So here we have Marshall quoting a fraud who is quoting a fraud who is not only a fraud by an anonymous fraud to boot.

But Marshall wasn't done, and less than a week later "reported" that "A high-level senate Democratic source tells me former President Clinton is making calls on Sen. Lieberman's behalf."

We are not told who this senator is or how he can be certain that Clinton made any of the alleged phone calls. Was this senator the recipient of the call? Was he on three-way when it took place?

It doesn't help his case that the chief of the New York Times' "Opinionator" blog who reported this rumor does not believe it makes sense:

Lieberman was the foremost Democratic critic of his conduct during the Lewinsky affair. Moreover, there is practically nothing for Clinton to gain by pushing this issue in the Senate.

It's also worth noting that the Clinton camp strongly denied the allegation (See NYT link above).

Regardless of who is telling the truth with respect to this phone call, this is a rumor, and it's undeniable that rumors are unfortunately an integral part of TPM, from the leadership all the way to the readers' comments section.

Your argument is well taken, but you're incorrect about 'Eisenstadt'. The hoax was his claim to be Carl Cameron's source. He wasn't. Cameron's source was presumably an actual McCain campaign adviser. That doesn't make it any more or less true, but the unveiling of the Eisenstadt hoax (which was actually unveiled ages ago) doesn't impact Cameron's reporting in any way.

'truth'seeker:

Before you pontificate about the Eisenstadt source story, perhaps you should do some research about it to make sure you understand it in full.

Your post makes clear that you do NOT understand it - as Matthew points out above.

There is little doubt that Palin DID make the statement. The erroneous part was in the attribution to someone who does not exist - apparently to shield the identity of the source.

And given the Clintons' history in the honesty department, I would take their declarations with a massive grain of salt. Or - given YOUR history regarding the Clinton's, do you only believe them when it bolsters YOUR argument?

user-pic

Does their "history" include the racist comment to the effect that LBJ helped Martin Luther King push civil rights?

Remember, you might see the "history" of those who you hate as awful, while others might not.

user-pic

You said that "There is little doubt that Palin DID make the statement."

What makes you say there is 'little doubt' she said this? I'm trying to find the information and links necessary to make the update. Thanks.

user-pic

There are huge doubts she said it or in what context. I'm sure she occasionally mixes up her 5 kids' names as all parents do when flustered or in a hurry, but that doesn't mean she doesn't really know their names.

Backstabbing anonymous gotcha politics at its best.

user-pic

And if you are interested in Carl Cameron's history, I have some Media Matters links I'd love to give you.

user-pic

I understand. Just so I have the right information for the update, who was the leaker?

truthseeker:

You are spoiling all of the fun. It is not enough to elect a man like Senator Obama who, even to the most cynical among us, appears to at least have potential to move beyound the mundane political quagmire that defines us. No, some of us would simply replace the right-wing echo chamber with its mirror imageon the left, and create our own version of something that is not of the muckraking variety that many drew many of us to places like TPM in the first place.

Perhaps where we differ is that I have read Josh Marshall for many years and I remember how he reported on North Korea's acquisition of a nuclear capability, and how he, unlike anyone on the internet, reported on the lead-up to the Iraq War with unmatched objectivity and with unmatched comprehensiveness. I have to believe that after he and his colleagues have had the chance to catch their breath, and after the dust has settled from this long campaign that included a very harsh civil war between brothers and sisters in the progressive coalition, they will return to that kind of tough and probing and honest journalism that set them apart from the rumor mongers and the shrill who dominate the internets. Keep hope alive truthseeker.

Recommended because we like it here and we remain.

I am the worst editor in America. Apologies.

I have not seen a supported accusation about reporting on matters of substance. The two you mention are either snarky fun concerning a howling embarrassment to our politics or internal Senate caucus politics, with dueling assertions.

Not losing sleep over it. Especially since, as Bruce points out, on matters of great substance TPM has been valuable.

You and bslev are right that Marshall does very solid reporting, but he sometimes relies on anonymous sources, which is the main point I try to convey: that rumors are fun, hard to resist and won't go away.

user-pic

If it wasn't for anonymous sources, there would have been no Watergate, and no Nixon impeachment/resignation. Anonymous tips often lead to real stories.

user-pic

Anonymous sources are ESSENTIAL when it comes to governmental crimes and protection of whistleblowers. But we are talking gossip between wingnuts about geography. It would be hard to disagree with this thought by Greta Van Susteren,

The USA Today founder called it "the evil of journalism":

"It's so simple. Most anonymous sources often tell more than they know. Reporters who are allowed to use such sources sometimes write more than they hear. Editors too often let them get away with it. Result: Fiction gets mixed with fact."

He sometimes relies on rumors? Sometimes?

Your post, from the title to the text, suggests it is way more than sometimes. It suggests that rumors are the... *ahem*... fuel! That rumors are an "integral" part of TPM. Your post was not about "fun" and "sometimes."

Once again you've been called out for the right wing hack you genuinely are, providing little substance and not a small amount of desperate, pathetic bullshit.

Cheers.

user-pic

Marshall is not TPM. Note that TPM is made up of him and other bloggers, including anonymous readers who love rumors. I never spoke of rumors being the fuel that powers Josh Marshall.

Learn how to read.

user-pic

O come on.

Every major news outlet carried the Palin story. TPM has done a lot of really good journalism - they kept on the DOJ story until it became a national story, among other things.

You obviously don't basic journalism or blogs. Stories that turn out to baseless get corrections, often immediately in comments.

There's nothing dishonest about this site - if there was it wouldn't get noticed by the national press and quoted approvingly.

Now grow up and stop this.

user-pic

Yes, Mommy.

user-pic

There is nothing wrong with rumors and gossip; they are integral to news. They can be leads to big stories, their appraisal can augur what the true details really are, and they're fun. The error is believing rumors and gossip - and one of the pleasures of TPM is that it's apparently intended for readers and posters not that gullible.

user-pic

"The problem with academics and commentators is that they are often more concerned with whether or not their ideas are interesting than wheher they are true."

This passage shamelessly lifted from a NYT Magazine article has provided me with much needed solace.

user-pic

That is very true, especially in this age of numerous blogs competing with each other.

user-pic

But, but, but... that would mean everything I read on the internet would have to be true!

Unacceptable.

Let TPM go on reporting fabrications and leave it up to me to suspend my own damned disbelief. Just like when I watch the MSM.

The Mission Was, In Fact Accomplished. Wasn't it?

user-pic

Sorry ts77, you blew it by crediting the Eisenstadt hoaxsters as Cameron's source and by conflating a "A high-level senate Democratic source" with "We are not told who this senator is".

Do you understand that a high-level dem senate source does NOT equal a Dem Senator?

Are you attempting to be a Bob Somerby doppleganger?

You need to go to school and learn how to do this stuff better. Here's a hint, details do matter and you sabotage your own efforts because of sloppy work.

BTW... the fantasy that Bill would never raise a finger to help Lieberman because of Joe's crap re Lewinsky is BS sold to those with ADD. Bill went to CT to support Holy Joe in his election battle w/ Lamont and supported his stance on Iraq. McCain's horrid joke about ugly Chelsea was much worse and even THAT atrocity was forgiven for the sake of political collegiality or whatever.

And no, the Clintons are not the only politicians who play these games as our Dem Senators collectively kissing Joe's ass cleary demonstrates.

You want to bash Josh about the Clintonian phone calls in Lieberman's defense? Fine. Focus on the fact that, AFAIK, Josh has ignored the disavowal from Bill's spokesman even though as he linked to the HuffPo article that updated their own story with Matt McKenna's denial.
