Razzle Dazzle? Sacrifice fly? Ally oop?
What's going on with the health care reform bill?
Is it a hail mary?
Fumble?
Razzle dazzle*
(restrictions may apply with regard to success of actual resulting dazzle. In some states, dazzle is void where prohibited.)
Is it quickly becoming a bunt, when what we really need is a home run?
Is it a 280 yard drive to the hole that will get us to within putting range of an extraordinary legislative achievement?
Or is it a drive to the basket that will roll around the rim six times, just barely drop in and draw enough flagrant fouls to potentially win on free throws?
Is it a classic give and go? Give the pharmaceutical and health insurance industry everything they want, then go on August recess?
Is it a fake left, go right to reconciliation?
Is it a prison football game? Where most of the participants are actually hardened criminals including the warden and the guards? And the new guy is just looking to cut deals for personal protection?
Is it only an exhibition game this time around? (Real season not starting for another 57 years.)
Is it one quarterback vs 7000 lineman ready to pounce on him including Democrats facing the wrong way?
Okay, I got this started.
Anyone want to take the ball and run with it?

A "wandering reader and seer" pointed this out to me:
It appears that a "veil of darkness" is falling upon TPM as there is mocking of Hail Mary, Blackwater charges, Wlliam Jefferson convicted, Coal industry bamboozlement and forged letters from Hispanics and Blacks, investigation into Brown....There is much more word frequency study, semantical affinity and content analysis left to be done....But time is limited....So much "dissimulated unlightness" all at once..."Steering" or "steering through"... Hopefully, the "real Sun" will return and will shine its "true light" upon it all....

"veil of darkness"
so you're saying it's a night game, Leo? Okay, that's a good start.
The health care reform bill is a night game. As sports metaphors go, it doesn't really do much for me, but thanks for playing.

I sort of think of it as a spring football league. It ought to work, there ought to be a market for it. The numbers all say it should work. The public can't get enough of football, after all, and no one really likes baseball or basketball all that much, or at least not enough to crowd out the possibility of, well, football, should be enough to sort out any objections. Damn it, it ought to work.
The new league launches with lots of fanfare, picks up a TV contract and some decent names and support. Attendance is okay, but tapers. Before long, though, the teams are scrimping, some are folding. The league contracts and then disappears, leaving those few passionate supporters wondering why.
The reason is simple. At the end of the day, people tend to stick with what they know. The owners of the game do everything they have to do to win. And the public likes football in the fall. They may think, and even say, they want something else, but they stick with what they already have, already know.
That's what will happen here. Which is too bad, because I absolutely loved the USFL.

That is a fascinating way to look at it. Very conceptual. Thanks for commenting.

Bases loaded, nobody out. Dems hit the ball on the ground to the third baseman, who fields it and steps on the base. Runner from 2nd is out: 1 out.
Man on third is halfway to home, but turns around and heads back to third. Third baseman tags him out: 2 outs.
The pitcher is at bat. The fans hope for a miracle.
