Week of August 3, 2008 - August 9, 2008

Wow, have you seen pics of the opening ceremonies in Beijing?

Have a look.

Republicans stage protest to vote on oil drilling. Operative word: "stage"

The Grand Oil Party was on the hill today, well, fifteen of them anyway, while everyone else is on vacation.  Their cause:  pleading that Nancy Pelosi call an emergency session to pass a bill that calls for opening up new areas for oil drilling.
They're being disingenuous.  (I know, what else is new.)

The area they're talking about is mainly the outer continental shelf--well, 1/5th of it anyway.  The other 4/5ths is already open for drilling but the oil companies have done nothing.
If the Republicans really wanted to do something productive, they could have voted for a bill that would require oil companies to start using the leases they already have.   It is estimated that the areas the oil companies already have the green light for has twice as much oil as the area Republicans are making such a big deal about.
So this is all a political farce, dressed up as a crisis that the Democrats refuse to address.   It's more like a last ditch effort on behalf of oil companies to gain control of the area in question efore Bush and Cheney leave office.

It's not even likely that that oil will end up in your tank. Since the Department of Defense is the largest consumer of oil in the world, it's likely to end up in army tanks.
Speaking of which, maybe we should kick our other addiction;  war.
I'm not against a compromise.  I'm not against more environmentally-safe domestic drilling.
What I am against is blatantly lying to Americans so neocons can stay in control of the White House.
