Pelosi States the Obvious: Healthcare Reform Could Leave GOP Powerless for Decades

"Pelosi, in painting the debate in starkly political terms, was careful to say clearly that it was the Republican Party that did so first. But underlying her remarks is a belief held by many in both parties that if Democrats can pass health care legislation that expands coverage and brings down cost they can lock up the majority for years to come, much as the party did after implementing the New Deal reforms."

Glad I found this in the midst of the onslaught of spam. I think that we need to have multi-city demonstrations. I am glad that the July 30th demo is going on, but it needs to be more wide-spread to get the message out.

The republican hate machine is in full force.

Two days ago I passed a car that had a bumper sticker of a local republican as we both waited for a light. I was in the right-turn lane, and the other car was in the left-turn lane. I went on when the light changed, and a few seconds later this woman pulled up beside me on my right and was yelling at me. I thought she was saying, "Fuck you, mama," and then I realized she was saying "Fuck Obama" as she gave me the finger.

When she drove off, I realized it was the same car I had noticed a few seconds earlier. She had gone out of her way (from left-turn lane to right-turn lane) just to yell at me because of my "Impeach Bush (2), and Obama 08" bumper stickers. I was so shocked I didn't have time to respond. I'll be ready next time though.

I'll put a great big smile on my face and say,

"WE WON! GET OVER IT, LOSER!"

Good point C'ville. There should and may be local demonstrations as well. I could make a visit to my reps office. I will ask Healthcare Now if they are aware of any local demonstrations being organized.
Thanks for the idea.

user-pic

I agree with you on this, but the only way to organize such a mass mobilization would be if Obama has his organization finally get into gear and call for it. Otherwise, there is no defninitive leadership among the politicians and organizations. I don't think Obama or his organization are so inclined as to do so however which is a damn shame.

Perhaps a good bumper sticker to add to the other two.

I don't feel that way about our situation in general, and would love for the millions of republican voting block (as opposed to their financial block), whose lives would be far better if they had the security of health care. Crocodile tears? Those are the tears of the republican hate machine who cry about "small business owners." They could care less about anything small, except for their collective votes, gleaned by scare tactics.

If it were so obvious as the title implies, the Dems would be not be so undisciplined about getting it passed!

user-pic

What makes you think that? The Blue Dogs, DLC Dems, and other DINO's don't give a rats ass about such a thing. In fact, they are much more comgortable when the GOP (the party they actually belong to) is in power. These faux Democrats represent the very same interests the Republicans do. Party is nothing but a label to them that is meaningless. Their entire cause is the protection of the status quo and the interests of predatory wealth. As long as they themselves are re-elected they have no other concerns.

user-pic

This is not as easy as you seem to think. The devil is in the details. Passing the wrong legislation could be disastrous for democrats. I suspect that time it necessary to get it right. Some democrats are jockeying for a bigger piece of the pie.

Perhaps it should be titled "... Effective Healthcare Reform Could Leave GOP Powerless for Decades.

July 24, 2009 7:29 PM post is a reply to clearthinker's "If it were so obvious as the title implies ..." comment.

This is not as easy as you seem to think.

Oh, I know. But try telling that to many of the TPMers here. Hell, we have posters speculating on an Obama conspiracy to talk about race issues as wag the dog for healthcare!

By the way, I still don't think it's obvious to the Dems. The Dems aren't worried so much about the details that you are talking about, they are still talking about the much broader issues. They aren't disciplined as a party. Never were.

Democrats in Congress elect weak leaders like Pelosi and Reid deliberately so they can have maximum freedom for the individual members. We haven't had a strong House Speaker since Jim Wright and we haven't had a decent majority leader in he Senate since Mike Mansfield.

We would like to thank Americas Health Insurance Industry. Where your health is their Business but NOT their Concern.

Without whom all of these blogs would not have been necessary.

This is one of my favorite posts.

1. Pelosi painted the debated in starkly political terms.

2. But that must be an awfully bad thing, because she quickly pointed it out that Republicans "started it first"

3. Despite that careful PR-driven disclaimer, her words are based on the belief in both parties that a lasting electorate majority can be achieved by Democrats, if they can pass the healthcare reform without bankrupting the country.

So, finally, we're openly saying what this has really been about all along - CVille Dem's big smile "WE WON! GET OVER IT, LOSER!".

The crocodile tears of the state of American healthcare are pure theatre. Millions of "dying uninsured Americans" are just lowly pawns on the way to an enduring electoral majority.

user-pic

Lalo, sometimes you even outdo your own absurdity!

If I may remind you, my comment was not about health care; it was in response to someone who drove up to the side of my car and yelled, "Fuck Obama!" at me.

Don't cherry-pick snippits of what I say and then apply them as though it is my entire philosophy, and certainly not that of others who post here.

user-pic

In other words, you simply waded into a post on Pelosi's pronouncements on GOP becoming powerless for decades because of their HEALHCARE position and ended up writing (without any reason or connection, obviously) the same thing you always write about - the hate machine, getting the message out, multi-city demonstrations, etc.

And even your triumphant script for your next encounter with the hate machine ("WE WON! GET OVER IT, LOSER!") has nothing to do with any of these words: "GOP", "powerless", "decades", etc.

Please. Who are you trying to fool? Only yourself.

user-pic

Oh, Pot -- I mean Lalo -- do you see that black kettle? I don't think I want to follow your rules for staying on-topic, because you don't have any.

user-pic

Actually, I didn't say a word about the rules.

I simply pointed out that you were in fact perfectly "on-topic" with the post, and that this is the true topic that motivates your actions.

The rest is just marketing slogans, to ensure the voter base remains sizeable and permanently grateful.

user-pic

As opposed to sizeable and permanently afraid and well-armed, but also uninsured.

user-pic

No. Sizeable, poor, sick, stuck in public schools and completely dependent on the Government. Why would Democrats eliminate their own voter base?

user-pic

Lalo, you are one sick puppy. I almost feel empathy towards you.

user-pic

Look at our public education, our public health care, our public veteran's affairs, anything.

Better yet, tell me which public service you're really proud of. How it doesn't end up in a permanent crisis and require more and more spending. How it turns the poorest Democratic voters into rich Republicans, they would surely be grateful for that.

As for the "sick puppy" and various other names you used on this thread, I'll write it off to an instinctive reflex borne out of years of fighting the Reputhuglican hate machine.

Perhaps your "almost empahty" should be reserved for your next encounter with that Republican lady. I'm sure she saw lots of Dem but not enough CVille yet.

user-pic

Tell me Lalo. What is your solution. Because all I ever hear from you is griping and complaints. How do you think it should be done?

The VA is actually pretty good, although it needs constant efforts to improve it -- so what else is new?

The school systems I have had experience with have all been excellent. I know that is far from the case in may localities, but I don't agree that "schools are terrible."

The NIH, CDC in Atlanta, and many other aspects of the "Public Health" system are excellent. Many are not.

Is that your point? I ask you again. What is your solution?

user-pic

I heard this somewhere, or read it at huffpo.

No matter how the economy recovers the right will twist it into a failure.

No matter how well a new health care 'system' is created the right will twist it into a failure.

No matter how well our shores are defended, the right will spin that we are less safe.

But I think there is a sentiment building in this country that the repubs are irrelevant to any serious discussion of the issues.

user-pic

I doubt that it is real people who'll benefit from all new reforms. The business of some people who produce the things that will be needed because of the reform will benefit for sure. As for me,I'm disappointed in politics. I've read a very nice book by a great politologist Prof. Robbins about the democracy . Found it at the book search engine http://pdf.rapid4me.com . Well, we think that we choose a party or a president but it is not so, because there is no choice. And now the tax payers pay.
