When the Kids Notice, Watch Out
My 20-something son, film student, writer, waiter, asked me about AIG. So I launched into an explanation of financial leveraging in general, and credit default swaps in particular. He said he knew that stuff, but wondered what was up with those bonuses. That's trouble, as in Vietnam. The kids might have been low-key about Iraq, since only their gung-ho friends went. But when they see their personal future looking bleak, carrying large college loans, still waiting tables, they kinda notice the discrepancy between their lives and certain others'.
Frank Rich gave credit to a reader letter in the Times for being the first to ask if this is Obama's Katrina moment. I think the evidence is that only the media is fussing over the administration's somewhat confused actions, while people are wondering how it came to be that we need to save the asses of the richest financial "products" companies. Calling this Katrina for Obama is like saying Bush had to know how to deflect a hurricane. He didn't; he only needed to show he gave a damn, and tried to help (he didn't). Obama had already shown this, during the campaign when McCain couldn't show he even knew what was happening.
As (former) NC Steve points out, when many big names are disagreeing in a large way, it's clear no one knows for sure what to do. But some appear to care and others don't. 'Ware the mob, my worthies. You have angered them, and they outnumber you.

My niece, who just friended me at Face Book, is in college and has been ranting all week about the bonuses. I told her, on her wall, that she "rawks".

See, there is another one. I hereby award you the Dayly Line of the Day Award for this TPMC site, given to all of you from all of me.
You would get more but I would have to give you one every day. And the folks would think we were in cahoots.
Which is the real problem in this economic mire. No matter what action is taken, people will think that there is some conspiracy going on. Even I come to that conclusion almost every day.
Well the Treasury Secretary once did work of Goldman Sacks and this guy once performed this
task for Merrill or whatever.
And just the conspiracies popping up in my mind about the top capitalists meeting together and forming some consensus about certain issues and...
So, I pull back. I voted for this Administration.
I will do my part and try to keep up with the goings on.
Good post. As always.

I don't know about a real "conspiracy", entertaining though the thought might be. I think things are just so completely intertwined in that world that it's not possible any longer to bring in an "outsider" - there are none remaining in the high finance world.
And I'm not sure it bodes well or ill, so much as that it speaks to only one mindset being available, which does worry me.
What I do know is that regulatory oversight is going to have to be greatly increased, here and around the world. Are the vision and will there for that?

Remember that many (most?) kids get their news from Jon Stewart's Daily Show, and the economy differs from Iraq in another way---it's totally cool to make fun rich people, no patriotism issues, and no holds barred.

As usual I am off subject here. My own son, thirty this year, just feels "they" are a bunch of crooks and supports our New President. And he watches Stewart every day he is on, just like me.

I think it's the subject, exactly.

Nice. That's part of what we're doing here, right-remembering?
The blog mob (or "blob" for short).

Yes, Don, it isn't a good idea to sneer at the mob, right now.

Good blog post. A nuclear economy melts down and a nuclear family relationship manifests the fallout. Well told.

My daughter is 15, and she not only pays attention, she's become a thought leader among her group when it comes to politics. I remember being her age during another tough economic time - anybody remember WIN buttons? Lee Iacocca? The oil embargo? We will get through this, but it will not be pretty, and hopefully the youngsters are not only paying attention, they are learning, too.

Just wait until the kids figure out that along about 2005 or so, the top wall street and financier excutives, while they were taking Billions in bonuses and at the same time realized that they were making promises that they could not keep and not telling the marketplace the facts, were all committing basic financial fraud.
You go Andrew!!!
Eric Holder, I you go too!!

My niece goes to private school and she told me that when Obama won the election, students whose parents were Republicans went around pulling the fire alarms.
She couldn't understand why they would do such a stupid thing.
I told her that many Republicans in congress pull fire alarms, albeit figuratively, all the time.
Yes, the kids are paying attention now.
