On one side (let's call it Side A) are those who see terrorism, especially 'Islamist' terrorism, as a hateful, insane scourge that spins on its own axis, in its own orbit and has nothing to do with the world around it, nothing to do with history, geography or economics. Therefore, Side A says, [for anyone] to try and place it in a political context, or even try to understand it, amounts to justifying it and is a crime in itself.
This is amazing. With all of our troubles, how difficult would democracy be with four times our population. And an almost insurmountable schism between Hindus and Muslims that is 11 or 12 hundred years old. And now with Pakistan in the middle of a middle east war, informal or formal, India is drawn into it.
And Pakistan and India are nuclear.
I do not mean to treat this lightly. But Hindus do not even believe in eating meat. In some places Hindus are not fond of swatting flies.
Yet there are right-wing Hindus as pointed out in the article. And even more interesting is that English is a language that can be understood all over India.

Thanks, Tom for posting her article. It is rare to find such an inciteful and comprehensive take on such a complicated issue. Are there any writers in our country who would attempt to deconstruct our path since 911?
I wish the end of the article had a solution other than looking this demon in the face; I wonder what is next. I know this is simplistic, but it makes me think that the world should divide up into caucases -- everyone just shift to a place with others who are like-minded and just stay there.
