« OK, SOMEONE NEEDS TO TELL ME IF MY FRIEND DICK DAY (2D) IS OK! | O¿O in the crowd's Blog | ... but then, there are the days like the past few here at TPM. (and Speak Up, You Never Know What Might Happen.) »

DICK DAY, I HAVE A COMPUTER FOR YOU. N/C or should I say "Pro Bono"? (Please rec this so he is sure to see it)

I have a used PC. It is yours if we can figure a way to get it to you. My wife used it for a while at work but no more. Assume your monitor, keyboard and mouse are OK if not I am sure we can round up what you need to get back up and running from friends at this site. JUST SAY THE WORD.

( am also looking for an OLD laptop and will let you know if I find it. But for the moment let me know what you think.)

Good to hear you are alive and kicking. My phone is as follows but typed backwards to avoid those number captures, and I really don't care if those that take the time to read this know the number.

IT IS 5918-682-047 again that is backwards start at the 7.

Just let me know how I can help buddy.

PS: If his friends and mine would link this in their blogs I would be appreciate it. Hell for that matter go ahead and send him my phone if you can contact him or put it in a post he regularly comments to, just post it backwards if you don't mind. Or send me his in a post here. Either way is fine I am just looking to help.

Thanks for Rec'ing this I appreciate it. I hope he logs on in time.
Again THANKS

user-pic

Arthur (dd)is supposed to call me tomorrow...I offered to to take up a collection to purchase him a new computer and he very graciously declined the offer, not liking that he could never repay our generosity. I strongly twisted his arm, and when his computer COMPLETELY crapped out, he let me know he is seriously reconsidering...

He may find this to be an easier to swallow alternative. I will let him know about your offer when he calls.

He is extremely touched by everyone's kindness!

user-pic

Count me in for whatever you come up with, SI. He is so valuable to all of us!

user-pic

Hi Stilli and all -

Steve and I spent a while on the phone this morning. The computer in question has Windows 98 on it. So what we don't know is if DD is used to Windows XP or Windows 98 or what. A Windows XP computer has been located (by me) and that can be sent to dd if he is used to XP.

So here is what we need to know:

Windows 98 or XP?
Broadband or dialup?
What other programs does he use?
His address

I think we should take the thepeoplechoose's offer of the 19" Samsung. That's what I'm using, almost, and I think it's great.

I have to do a clean install on the XP computer and install Windows XP back on it. Would be ready to ship tomorrow.

What does the community think? Try to match what dd knows or just send the XP quickly?

user-pic

If he was able to master whatever he's had, he can master this!

What about adding Linux and Ubuntu if possible? (That's from another thread when I was discussing something with someone, can't recall who.) The reason I say that is for protection and to minimize that dd is going to have problems over and over.

But you computer folk know best!

God love you!

user-pic

He had an XP box. (XP home)

user-pic

I have all the questions jotted down and will ask them when he calls...If by chance he does NOT call, I will send him an e-mail this evening, but it may be days before he sees it,assuming he is still trying to get to the library.

You guys rawk!

Should anyone need/want to reach me privately, my e-mail address is stillidealistic@ymail.com

user-pic

More at the bottom of the thread. Start here with a comment from dd and keep reading.

user-pic

If he doesn't, republish this as a new blog.

Seems like I heard somewhere that he has a hard time seeing his monitor. Dell is offering a 17" flat screen for $79.00 and a 19" for $109.00. Just a few of us pitching in $25.00 or so should be able to buy and ship him one (from anywhere, not just Dell).

user-pic

Count me in.

user-pic

O¿O in the crowd -

Is this computer currently running and on the Internet? If it is, and you could put logmein on it (through my account), I could come in and optimize it, add an anti-virus and in general put it back to new status. We could also leave the program on it and if dd runs into trouble, he has computer help immediately and for free. All my accounts are on it, leaving me working from home most of the time.

user-pic

Give me a ring tomorrow AM (EST) it was at one time about 8 months ago. It was dial up and I don't have dial-up anymore. I use satellite link to connect, YEA I REALLY am a hillbilly. If I can figure out how to connect it via "Wild Blue" it sounds perfect. I will give it a shot tomorrow early morning. If nothing else maybe I can just get it in your hands first and you can take it from there. Lots of software on it too, Pagemaker 6.5, works, etc... I can't remember what version of windows it has. THANKS Seashell

user-pic

OK, I will, O¿O in the crowd. How about 9 AM EDT? Getting in thru dialup would be a hassle. But if you have it on and hooked up to a monitor I can ask you some questions and get a feel for what we've got. But sending it to me first might also work if it needs memory, network cards, etc. I've got legacy parts galore in my attic.

Stilli, does dd have broadband or does he use dialup?

user-pic

Perfect,
Look forward to it. don't know what his connection is. Hope Stilli checks in again. Hell I might get you to take a look at my system.
THANKS Seashell

user-pic

Talk to you in the AM. Glad to look at yours too!

user-pic

That, sweets, I don't know, but I will ask ask him when he calls...

You guys all rawk! I knew when I broached the subject w/ him initially that y'all would want in on this. I was waiting to put it out there until I got his approval, but I think he will be much more comfortable with a 2nd-hand-no-longer-being-used machine than w/ the new one I was suggesting to him.

Again, he is supposed to call tomorrow and if he does, I will let him know to contact "Face" and we'll get rolling. I'm so excited by the prospect of having him back, and obviously, I'm not alone...

user-pic

Ok to go ahead and call now if you want

user-pic

OK, calling in 5 minutes.

user-pic

And somebody mentioned yesterday about putting Unix in and Ubuntu is free as another alternative.

This is thing of beauty.

Here's what I'm thinking. If we could figure out a "chain of custody" we might even drive it there. Though UPS is likely faster.

user-pic

Another thought. If he is reluctant to accept this, tell him how FDL is taking up a collection to help emptywheel work full time on researching torture and other muck. So we tell him he's needed as a blogger. And we'll assist. Plenty of others accept donations. Indeed Josh himself solicited them on a couple of occasions before his became an Empire.

user-pic

Thera, he can't even bring up word on his computer now, and it is driving him nuts...I am almost certain he will accept our help, it's just a matter of figuring out how best to proceed, and we'll know that in a day or two...

user-pic

Oh, I didn't mean to put it on his computer - on this "new" one.

user-pic

Yep...just meant that when he thought he could salvage his old computer he was reluctant to accept help...now that he knows his is beyond repair, he is reconsidering...

I think he will like this compromise...

user-pic

If he doesn't want to accept this, tell him I'm a hillbilly that really doesn't know any better and God forbid he piss off an a real live hillbilly.

☺ ☺ ☺ ☺

user-pic

Oh, well, for sure a hillbilly must be "helped" - and if that means taking their cast off stuff, well then, bit the bullet, dd!

user-pic

bite the bullet, of course...

user-pic

I like your idea of "chain" driving it there.
If I could afford a rental car, the gas and a few stops at a hotel each way I would drive it myself. I just don't have faith my 94 GMC Jimmy could make it.

user-pic

I've looked it up on a map. I could easily do the last leg, either from Chicago or Milwaukee. It's a lovely drive and we've done it many times. He's up northwest of Duluth.

user-pic

Anyway you could detour through California? I hate it that my only contribution can be financial (although I'm grateful I am able to kick in money!!!)

user-pic

Why... we always take a CA detour!!! No matter where we're coming from or going to. LOL!

user-pic

The hardest was doing that from Spain...

user-pic

I love Linux, but it is a far cry from Windows when getting devices to connect it. I don't think it's for someone like dd.

If you were the last leg, could you help him set up a Windows computer?

user-pic

Set up a Windows box? I can do that.

user-pic

How far away are you from dd, OG?

user-pic

I just checked, OG. From the Minneapolis airport to Virginia, MN is about 200 miles, or about 3.5 hours away. Here is the Google Map.

Too far?

user-pic

Not necessarily, but I drive a rustbucket - albeit one with some significant carrying capacity. For this, I'd figure something out.

user-pic

We should add on a huge monitor, and just say it's used. I know I HAVE to have a big monitor, or I couldn't see anything.

Tell DD it's our way of paying for his blogs. We're each throwing in 25 cents for each of his blogs we read and enjoyed. that's about $15,000 by my count. ;-)

Tell him WE'RE tired of freeloading off him, it's hurting our pride, and his snotty refusals are keeping us from feeling better - and from our Dayly fix. That'll fix him.

user-pic

That's pretty much the form my "strong arming" took, that he'd be doing US a favor! We very selfishly want him back!

user-pic

TPM = Family

"Small acts of Kindness..."

user-pic

And what a wacky family we are!!

WOT?
WOT??

THE END
hahahahahahaha

user-pic

Is there any other kind?

Even when DD isn't here he's with us. That's nice...

user-pic

It surely is. :)

user-pic

WOW FOLKS I really didn't expect all this.... No... actually I did... just not this quick.
THANKS!
I really hope we can get this all worked out.

user-pic

It's a simple matter of logistics.

user-pic

This is way more fun than torture!!!

user-pic

You know, Thera. I can remember participating in some gigantic project, everybody made a square. And wasn't there some hand holding across the nation thing way back? I also remember Granny D, no relation. This is more fun than walking across the country or pricking fingers or pulling arms out of sockets, so c'mon Arthur.

user-pic

I own a computer service company and would be glad to help if I can. Phone number is at www.allcompsyr.com

user-pic

Where are you located?

user-pic

He's in NY

user-pic

Just a reminder to please rec this so 2D has a better chance of seeing it.

And once Again THANKS for what can only be described as an outpouring to help a friend.

Hope we can make this work for everyone.

user-pic

If I can help I want to. I'm in California. Rec'd this once. We can do that every time we log on!

user-pic

Well, sometimes we can. Could. Anyway, spread the word to doubledownD

user-pic

I will be happy to pitch in. AND I'll throw in a tin of brownies. (homemade).

Let me know! Still?

Let me know

user-pic

Oh!

O¿O?

You totally rawk!!!!

I hope you feel better, thank you.

user-pic

BF,
Twanks! what exactly is in those brownies?

user-pic

Any chance that Josh or the site managers will bring some form of private messaging functionality? This is getting a bit ridiculous.

user-pic

Like so many other things, we used to have it! But no longer....

user-pic

If someone wants to be responsible to accept funds and pay for new monitor, frieght and whatever, just post address and I'll be glad to contribute so that dd can provide my 'daily fix' (it's cheaper than rehab and far less painful than the withdrawal for those of us addicted to dd's posts and his presence here!).

(Can receive funds thru PayPal too, very easy to set up.)

Thanks for post and your generosity (mean more than just the computer)!

user-pic

There ought to be a way to set something up with Amazon. So you could do a "group purchase." They should consider it.

user-pic

I have an old but very functional machine - I can possibly hand it off or cannibalize it. A few parts around, too, hard drives and such.

I live in MN - Twin Cities, though.

But I would be glad to help.

user-pic

Im on board with Sams idea,I will contribute. Can we do it with Paypal mabe. Somebody email me info.Boy, I just knew DD was in trouble,if we dont get him back to his puter he is gonna chain smoke, and that will pollute the whole earth, global warming and all. A laptop solves all his woes...$20 x 30 people is enough to do a pretty good bloggin laptop.Have it shipped right to him from Newegg.Im tired of feeling guilty about freeloading off of him too.Anyone know how to make a Paypal link?

user-pic

If Face's computer will work, seems like Seashell can answer that question tomorrow, then it's just a matter of getting Dick's shipping address and sending it. Seashell - would you also be willing to walk Dick through setting it up? As for a monitor - there are 22" flat panels out there for under $200.00. A question, though: how old is the cumputer and will a new monitor be easy to install if at all? I'll be happy to reimburse you, Face, for the shipping costs of the computer. I'll also purchase and ship a monitor with the understanding that those of you that are willing reimburse me for your share. Except for Face and Seashell, as you will have each already done more than your part.

Let's not waste time, folks.

user-pic

Barefooted, the graphics capability is one of the things I hope to ascertain when talking to O¿O tomorrow.

One thing to keep in mind is the difference between a notebook and a desktop. It's expensive to get a good quality, large screen on a notebook, whereas it is fairly cheap to put a 19-22" incher on a desk top computer. So even if this one is not capable and we all decide to pitch in for a new system, let's talk desktop, not notebook. And it's not like dd travels a lot in his pajamas!

I have walked the clueless (aka my family) through many a computer glitch. But we need a lot of questions answered first!

user-pic

You're absolutely right. A laptop is not a good idea. The simpler the system the better, the last thing we want is for him to be overwhelmed. Windows OS, etc. Can you help him with retrieving his old data from his dead machine? I can't imagine how, as the only way I know of is a hard drive transfer. Assuming his old drive is intact.

user-pic

Missy, check your e-mail when you get a chance!

user-pic

I have good antivirusantispyware stuff and file recovery utilities at my disposal. And an external HD enclosure to put the thing in and scan it.

I'm home late tomorrow.

user-pic

That's a great thought, me. But even if he can get his old drive to you to scan, how do you then transfer the info into the new one without having it on hand?

user-pic

Look upthread. Might even get involved in the delivery. So I'd take the enclosure (and a spare 40 GB drive, just because...) and my laptop, which has all the good stuff on it and I can plug the external into a USB port. Scan, fix, disassemble, reassemble. Simple stuff.

user-pic
Simple stuff.

Yeah, that's simple for you to say, ya Old Grouch ;-{)>

user-pic

Hey, except for my laptop, I have not bought a computer in over 10 years. And if they sold parts for laptops, I'd build that too.

user-pic

This is my first personal computer not related to work. I have had it for a year. I am sure there are tons of things I will never know about it. I'm glad to hear DD will be in good hands, because I totally relate to his frustration.

user-pic

I can't imagine anyone better to be his on-site "fixerupper". The two of you learning a few things from each other along the way. To be willing to make that kind of a trip for a friend who needs you? Proves you're a special person, which doesn't surprise me a bit.

user-pic

Puppy, that's another thing I'll ask him when he calls...When I was thinking new computer, I was thinking laptop, just cuz I love sitting in my recliner to type away, but if he needs the larger screen I can see that a desktop would be better...I'll confirm that size is an issue.

user-pic

Forgot to mention, barefooted -

If you are willing to do that for a monitor, that would certainly be the fastest way to get one to him. And I still would like to chip in on the money. Would like in on bwak's brownies, also!

Have been checking around and so far the best deal still seems to be the Dell offers.

user-pic

I saw those, too. The "deals" I saw expired tonight, but I'm sure that despite the marketing ploy the deals are still there in some fashion. Only good thing about the economy - electronics are fairly cheap! And yes, I'm more than willing and serious about the time frame on everything.

PS - You're not allowed to chip in, at least not monetarily.

PPS - I want in on those brownies, too.

user-pic

I just got back on line after moving to rural Delaware nearly a month ago. I have had to depend on the generosity of friends for my computers before and am so willing to contribute to 2D what I can. Just being with net was bad enough.

user-pic

hi, i've been following this with great interest and would love to help any way i can. who exactly is dick day and is there a blog of his i could read to see what the fuss is all about?

user-pic

Hit any of our names (we all follow Dickday) that will take you to our blog...hit the number after "following" and find his name. Click on that and you will be on his blog, then read away!

user-pic

Or click on your dashboard. And look down the right-hand side till you see a "most followed" list. He is on that list. Click his name.

user-pic

Much faster! What are you doing up at this hour? Getting ready for bed, or getting up???

user-pic

Hi Joyce. You may want to read more than one of DD's blogs if you hope to get any sense of the man. I say that because he is both prodigious in his output, and myriad in regard to his interests. I think you'll find him intelligent, funny, and possessing a grand and good heart. I haven't followed this blog closely, and this may have been noted elsewhere, so forgive me if it has. Due to health reasons Dick has fallen on hard economic times, but that rarely shows through in his posts or comments, as he seems to be one of those rare souls who can see the forest from the trees so to speak.

user-pic

Joyce, here are his blogs. Click on the tab next to "Posts" to see his comments, too.

user-pic

Please count me in too with some $. Just need to know where to send it? Thanks everyone.
We need DD back.
Soon.

user-pic

Sorry I've been out of commission with the newest torture revelations. But I'm on board with whatever!

I also have a friend in St. Paul who knows a lot about computers and is very kind, who keeps an eye on TPM - so that's a possibility too.

DD may end up with multiple systems before we're through here!

Maybe we should throw in a pair of pj's just for fun!

user-pic

I too of course will contribute $$$.

user-pic

Thera, dear, you have two friends in St. Paul. You just have yet to meet the Grouchy one...

user-pic

I get a daily email from the brother of a college friend, who's a monk. Here's what just arrived:

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Galatians 6:2

Synchronicity! (bless yourself, dd!)

I think we've found the "Holy Pail!"

user-pic

What we have found, Thera, is a friend in need.

A friend indeed.

user-pic

And that, my dear, must be the "holy pail." :)

user-pic

This thread proves that missing a day on TPM represents a day without sunshine - particularly if there is no sighting of Mr. Day. Please count me in for whatever is needed. (A share of the costs plus a rhubarb pie might be just right, but the meringue on top of the pie wouldn't travel well.) Still: please let me know how I may contribute.

user-pic

Count me in also. DD has been the source of my best belly laughs on TPM and a personal source of inspiration. So, with apologies to DickDay for my obviously selfish reasons, but it would do me a lot of good to be able to do something.

user-pic

I have a three year old 19" Samsung flat panel in its original box completely serviceable that is seldom used that I wouldn't miss. Someone has to tell me where to send it. My contact info is www.allcompsyr.com

user-pic

I did a quick Craigslist search in Duluth and found some very reasonable systems. My search string was computer, free in computers and electronics, might be worth a daily look or post a "wanted-free computer for crusty old curmudgeon" request.

http://duluth.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=computer%20free

user-pic

Mighty generous offer and the same kind of "looking out for one another" that you just might find in a "real world" community.

The internet never ceases to amaze me.

user-pic

Note to all: I'm traveling today, so on a plane for hours and hours. I'll be back into this thread tonight at home. And I'm down for helping in any hands-on way I can.

user-pic

It might be that Dicakdday is just a little tired of posting so much and this is a polite excuse for not doing so. Has anybody checked this plausible theory of mine out?

user-pic

No, I am in contact with him...1st he was unable to get onto the internet, then a few days later his computer completely crashed...He is having to go down to his local library to get online. He e-mailed me on Monday that he would call me today...I'm biting my nails waiting.

user-pic

What a decent thing to do.

It's hard to conclude that this place isn't different from most others.

user-pic

Hi folks. My PC is gone. alas and alack.

I shall keep in touch. The librarian is kicking me out.

user-pic

dd, call stillidealistic now!

user-pic

Unfortunately, I think he wrote his blog before he saw this and had to race to get a few words down before being booted off!

When my phone finally does ring, I'm going to jump out of my skin!

user-pic

I know, stilli. I know. I'll jump too. Report back immediately! Tell him it's a done deal, everything donated. Read below for an attempt to pull this whole thing together.

user-pic

OK, I don't know whether I caught him in time on calling stilli. We can hope.

In the meantime - I have a Windows XP box that really is just my back-up computer. I figure I don't need it nearly as much as DD. For those who like the particulars: Dell. Pentium 4, 2.66 GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB SATA HD. XP Media Center, CDrw/DVD. Broadcom Network Card, I'll hunt down a 56k modem.

It's a peppy little thing and I'm starting the process of reformatting and reinstalling Windows for a clean install. I can put Office 2003 on so he'll have Word, plus all the stuff like Flash, FoxIt Reader, Logmein, something for pictures, etc., that makes the computer easy to use.

With luck I can get this FedEx/UPS/USPS out tomorrow morning and to DD on Fri or Sat.

If everyone agrees to that, how about we then take up the peoplechoose's offer on the 19" Samsung and ask Old Grouch (in his rust-bucket) to go hook up the kit and kaboodle for him and make sure the whole system runs smoothly. Once dd is on the Internet, I can get in to help if and when he needs it.

Looking for ayes, nayes and/or suggestions here.

One more thing.... with so many people willing to help and if dd doesn't have broadband, how about if we pay for a year upfront and get him broadband?

O¿O, I got your disk made and will get that in the mail today. We owe you many, many thanks for getting this ball rolling. Brilliant move by a really great guy.

user-pic

I know everyone is in a big hurry to get this going, but we have one small problem...until he calls either Face or me, we have no ability to get a shipping address. Believe me, I tried to track him down before we knew his absence was due to the crashed computer.

I really believe he will put his pride aside and accept this gift, but we need to be patient (uugghh, how I hate that word!)

Will keep you posted.

Puppy, I think the year of broadband is a great idea...

user-pic

Puppy...e-mail me? stillidealistic@ymail.com

user-pic

Done.

user-pic

Replied. Wouldn't a PM system be nice right about now?

user-pic

Very nice on the PM. I read the email, but have to rush to the airport to pick up someone whose plane is 20 minutes early!!!!!

I'll write when I get back!

user-pic

OK, stilli. I'm back and have replied! Check your email.

user-pic

If necessary, ship it all to me. And I will drive it to where he lives. Or ship it to someone in the Twin Cities and they can get it to him personally!

user-pic

Throw in a pair of pj's too!

This is such a beautiful thing!

If EVER anybody attacks this group for being some kind of bad influence on the Cafe or TPM, God help them....

In the midst of this dark time, when our country is seeing so much shame, to have this beautiful thing happening lifts my spirits. It elevates all of us. The best of TPM Cafe!

user-pic

Couldn't have said it better myself. Right on Thera!

user-pic

Where can we send our contributions for the broadband or whatever is needed?

user-pic

Missy will co-ordinate that when we figure out what is needed.

user-pic

We should just go ahead and agree on whatever. Because whatever is left over is for the future fund - in case of need. That's my view of it.

user-pic

OOOOH, like a sunshine club! I like!

user-pic

Get AVG 8 free on there, as well as Spybot, and as many updates to those as possible. (Get them current...) And set them to auto-update if you can.

And the current Firefox (3.0.9) with AdBlock Plus and NoScript, maybe Tab Mix Plus and AVG Safe Search as well.

user-pic

Aye, aye, OG. I suspect you will be teaching him Firefox. Is that OK?

user-pic

Don't give him any Sudoku though because then he may not write as much as we would want him to write.

user-pic

Got it. No to Sudoku. Yes to Firefox. Would anyone like fries with that? :-)

user-pic

Wonderful! A hearty "yes" on the broadband idea. It all sounds like a done deal ... except for his address. To say this is frustrating is putting it mildly. Bless Dick's heart, even if he tried to turn us down, it's a tidal wave that can't be stopped. Love can be that way ...

user-pic

TPM Tsunami. "Mission Accomplished!"

user-pic

A few observations:

(1) A year of broadband (perhaps, even wireless?) is doable, especially if there's a donated computer.

(2) I think a laptop is a very good idea, especially if it's in excellent condition. Combined with the wireless idea, DD would have no excuse for not regularly blogging. And you guys could stop stalking him. :-)

(3) Someone set up a PayPal page where people can chip in (I vote for Face, since this outpouring is his brainchild).

user-pic

Yez, there are lots of pages for just this sort of thing

user-pic
And you guys could stop stalking him. :-)

OMG, so true! I wonder if he's out getting a restraining order as we speak! LOL

user-pic

I'm sure I counseled him against that... ;)

user-pic

This has been a truly AMAZING thing to watch take shape.
I always post, posts while I still have the edit tab open, so I can take a look at them and then click back to the edit tab and fix the mistakes I invariably make in the first draft. Well there were over 14 comments by the time I had "finalized" this post, about 5 minutes give or take.
I wasn't counting on the kind, amazing response I got from you folks. Hell I just wanted to send 2D a used computer taking up space in the hall closet so he could get going again... and just look what happened.
ALL I CAN SAY IS THANKS AND WOW! Having experienced this I HAVE to mention the following
I have been thinking about a kind of
TPM "helpers club" to offer assistance, support etc... to those that post here, it isn't something someone could "apply" for it would have to be... well... by "acclimation" like what we are doing here.
I know it sounds silly but it's just a thought, and a way "WE" can really do some good.
What do "WE" think?

user-pic

Stilli and I discussed exactly this via email a few weeks back. Count me in!

user-pic

O¿O - No, THANK YOU, for getting our community butts in gear. Best job of it I've ever seen! Also, kudos on getting the published time of the blog to 8:19 this morning. You may have to republish again?

I nominate you to lead the helpers club. Obviously, you do it well! Any other votes and nominations for officers in the club?

(Your disk is on the way via priority mail to the PO Box.)

user-pic

Seashell (normally you would now be SS but I figure I should ask before referring to you as "SS", rather evil sounding)
Don't know whether this post will stay up there much longer but I will keep trying.
THANKS for your help with my machine.

And again THANKS to ALL!!!!

user-pic

small ss doesn't look so evil-like. More seashelly, if you get current drift. :-)

user-pic

I certainly hope that DickaDay can get back online soon, but it might be cheaper to buy him an account at a cybercafe till he can get his old pooter fixed than to buy him a new one.

Another option is to check this site, where the US gumint auctions off all their surplus 'stuff'. You can search by state and by item. Currently there are two computer 'lots' up for auction. My experience is that the equipment being auctioned is in pretty much the condition it is listed as being in. The hard drives are all going to be scrubbed, and in some cases a new OS may be required.

The computer is ready to go along with a bigger monitor...just waiting for de to check in so we can get a shipping address, but thanks for the suggestions.

My understanding is that like Old Trot, dd's computer is dead. Terminated. Starting to smell. Deceased. Croaked. Perished. Snuffed Out. Not likely to compute anything ever again. It was not healthy lately. Being dead has not improved its disposition.

It's not only cheap we're looking for. It's also getting it to him fast. Or faster, anyway. Somewhere in the same time frame as it used to take Cheney to get to an undisclosed location.

Why are cybercafes like libraries?

user-pic

I think DD blogged so much he wore the durn thing out! But for we TPMitey-mites, he has not blogged enough! Where can I send some cash?!?

user-pic

I think Barefooted will be cash collector. But we're not sure yet how much, etc.

user-pic

I dunno?

user-pic

No pajamas.

Also. Glad ur here. Wot was that about brownies and stuff>

user-pic

pj's next time?

user-pic

Pj's all the time at home. At the library, not so much. dd can regale us all with tales of librarians clock watching him.

user-pic

Well, guys...It's 4:45 pst and still no call...I'm not going to even hazard a guess what that means.

I'm off to happy hour (seriously!) but I will be checking my phone regularly. I suppose it is still possible he'll call tonight, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've checked my e-mail to him to make sure I sent the right # and sent another e-mail giving him the number again, and asking him to please call me or Face ASAP...

Don't know what else we can do other than be patient. I'm on pins and needles and would imagine you are too, but what is, is. We just have to wait.

user-pic

We need to be sure this post stays up till dd sees it somehow!

user-pic

Since he commented briefly around Noon, it seems unlikely that he didn't read the post. At least the title ... which would have given him a clue, don't you think?

user-pic

Can you do a new blog linking to this? This is one is going off the top. Please help this stay up. A lot of us want to help with the year of broadband and this is our only way of staying in contact. Thanks.

user-pic

Why all these half measures? I say we adopt the little dickens.

user-pic

Now that was LOL funny. Can you imagine the whole cafe showing up in front of a judge?

user-pic

i just got here we need dd back as soon as possible if there is anything i can do let me know

user-pic

Wow, go away for the day and look what happens. . .I know I'm the newbie here, but in my first, nervous days DD was just incredibly kind to me, folding me into the group as he did. He's a sweetie!

And of course I never miss a missive. (Always wanted to use that. Now it looks a little lame, but you know what I mean.)

If you've set up a PayPal account please let me know. I would love to help. Maybe the quickest way to get him a computer is just to buy one. Sounds like we have some computer-savvy folks here who know all about that sort of thing.

Do you know how wonderful you people are?

I found this today, September, and it was by accident. On google.

How the hell can I ever repay you for this Face?

I do not even know if you or anyone will ever read this.
