Modern Day Trail of Tears

I finished reading another one of ThearP's posts , Thanks Thera, I can't tell you how moving that story was. It gives one pause to know there are folks who are against health reform and in particular a publicly run health insurance option. One does have to wonder how anyone could be against reform.  I was jarred by Thera's report. A boy left alone, maybe with a father that isn't so great, all because as a society we failed Terri Lynn. She worked hard, she deserved to have access to health care, because she is an American, and for no other reason. I have to say paying more in taxes that make sure everyone has access to health care seems a small price to pay, so that argument seems a harsh canard. Makes a human cringe at just hearing that kind of cold response. Sends shivers down ones spine, I never expect humans to have such disregard for the already living.
When I think about how little we seem to care for one another, I wonder if there ever was a time when it might have been different.
Greed,  greed in the Gordon Gekko mold, a mean greed, one that cares nothing for victims and those who ultimately lose out in this society, because for someone to be a big winner in this society, someone must also be a big loser, even when they try as hard as they can.
Our legislators must know how strongly we feel about this, it is the only way we can continue to move forward with solid reform, with a strong regulatory arm within the legislation.
First everyone must contact Harry Reid's Office, and your own senator, t is really important, even if you have to mail it via snail mail.
Make sure he  and they know, you know about rule 22. Demand rule 22 be set aside in order for a traditional filibuster to take place, no procedural filibusters should be allowed for this issue . This is more than important than anything but jobs and getting out of all these wars we seem to be in.. We have to fight for people like Terri Lynn and those who have gone before her and those who will inevitably go after her, leaving children, spouses, parents, our world, because we owe it to them, we must get something done and what ever happens there must be a publicly run insurance option. As American's we not only deserve this option, we demand
this option.
Oh and one more think, Joe Lieberman can suck it!

What part of Government is run well? Social security will be gone, Medicare and Medicaid are corrupt and all will be bankrupt soon. WHY then should the government take over Public Healthcare? What's better Public transportation or private? Public schools or private? Public housing or private? Just because 12.7% of the U.S. doesn't have ... Read Morehealthcare (for whatever their reasons) why would you throw away the whole system to appease that small percentage? I do not get it. It's not logical and the constitution is written to keep Government from encompassing people's lives. You don't HAVE to buy life insurance, car insurance or IRA's. Is it wise to do so? Yes. So, let those buy their healthcare like the rest of us do. NO, I don't want anymore Government in my Freedom.

That was written by a member of my family.

I and Norseman set her straight. Or, at the least, got her to shut up and no longer post that crap on my Facebook page.

That's my trail of tears.

I don't know why they don't care! i don't get it....
FB Lis! http://www.facebook.com/terimccarthy! Friend me! (the new verb, friending...)
And that goes for all if you, if you have FB account, I'd love to see you all there!

It's not that people don't care. It's that they don't believe what you are proposing is a good thing. I think health care will be significantly worse for most Americans if this bill passes. Yes, it will be theoretically better for a small number, but their situation could have been improved in other ways. And you say you wouldn't mind paying more in taxes. Really? Because I bet you don't pay alot right now. Most people don't. I don't anymore, but there was a time when I lost half my income to taxes. Now, if I had that money back my quality of life would be significantly higher. I have paid my share, your share, and a whole lot of other peoples shares. And now you want me not only to pay more, but accept a health care system that will put my life more at risk, endanger my health, so that someone else can get a free ride?

Hey Kreskin, the all knowing one. I do study scrotometry professionally so I know a dick when I see one! Thanks for playing.

user-pic

Wow, your family seems pretty smart. So I guess that rules out genetics! :)

I thoroughly sign on to your concerns here!

It reminds me of a report during the worst of Katrina, when a foreign news correspondent described the US as "a country that has stopped caring for its citizens". What an indictment that was! And how true. We are living in a place, at a time, when the Masters of Greed have gained control of government (by and large) and everything else. When they can spread the propaganda that lying and cheating is "necessary" to getting ahead - and a worthy endeavor to boot!. Too many people have signed on to the belief that it's ok to carry weapons to peaceful gatherings - even churches! That it's laudable to earn obscene amounts of money - on the public dime (if their risky bets failed) - because they are just so much more worthy than the folks standing in line to get their unemployment or maybe a free meal and a place to sleep for the night.

Who agreed that one human life is more worthy than another? That one person is deemed worthy of a salary that could feed thousands of families?

I am so ashamed of this country! Fighting useless wars abroad instead of illness and poverty at home. Educating young people - for no jobs when they graduate! Oh, yes... they could always join the military...

Something has gone terribly wrong. Trail of Tears is right!

Boy do we need reform! And it needs to start within human hearts. You can't legislate compassion. But that's what's needed.

Thanks.

user-pic

Yes it does, Thera. And compassion - "feeling with", if you want to go all classical, is difficult.

Warning: "Human nature" commentary past this point!

We tend to care about something in direct proportion to either its connection or its proximity to us. Family, a lot. Next-door neighbors, some. People a very long way away with barely pronounceable names? Not so much.

This makes it a challenging proposition.

Self-interest - as the Ayn Rand apologists so in fashion in some circles today would have it?

Bah! They don't understand the meaning of the term. The ultimate extension of what passes for their "philosophy" is not self-interest, it is the pure selfishness of the spoiled child. True self-interest carries a deep understanding of the ways people and their fellows (and environments) interact. An understanding seemingly (by definition) beyond those who brand themselves as "conservatives" these days - a true misunderstanding of the term.

Sadly, it is also seemingly beyond the grasp of many on our side. When people describe the left as a patchwork of causes, there is a painful bit of truth to it. This prevents - or at best hinders - the sort of broad-front advances President Obama is seeking. We are not going to get everything we seek for whichever cause we speak for all at once. We are probably going to be in holding patterns waiting for legislative, rather than judicial, solutions.

This is not necessarily a bad thing.

Salients are easily reduced.

History shows us very few truly decisive battles.

And always we are out in the world looking for more, rather than tending to what's crumbling here at home.

We have a lot of work to do, and President Obama (I just love saying that because, well, it pisses off the wingnuts!) and Congress are not going to do it all.

I genuinely don't like to conclude by quoting Shakespeare, though in this instance, the answer is indeed "...not in our stars, but in ourselves."

Beautiful grouch... really.

user-pic

I'd read both of you new blogs Thera and they made me so entirely sad, but the second one, well tears fell down my cheeks, the kid was left behind, shit. Nothing is worse, nor sadder, and she struggled hard with what she had, shit, it is still making me cry. All of my complements to you, and I am so glad you are back.
And the FB friending request goes to you too!

user-pic

Where do I find you on FB?

Inquiring minds and all that...

Awesome, friend me!!!! You will see the same picture so you will know it is me Grouch!
Otherwise you can search for Teresa McCarthy.

Gotcha!

user-pic

Why is carrying weapons a problem? It's the person not the weapon that is the problem. And why is it wrong to EARN lots of money, unless you earn it illegally or immorally ? As far as the value of one life over another, ask that about abortion.

user-pic

You, of all chihuahuas, might have good reason to be glad that many people do not carry weapons.

Not to mention the only way you'd ever legally see lots of money is on TV.

user-pic

As a nation, we need to recapture our integrity. We have been decimated by our own government. Trail of Tears is an apt title, mac. Very apt.

user-pic

They've had one hell of a lot of help, Flower.

user-pic

Yes they have Grouch, time for us to stop them, if we can.

user-pic

We've been decimated by special interests and fuck face Joe Lieberman and all those like him, he is the ultimate Gordon Gekko... does my hatred show?????
Thanks Flower!

If one was inclined to boil down your post to render our single concentrated fault one would end up with your:

because for someone to be a big winner in this society, someone must also be a big loser

Wall street, housing, education, I could go on and on. When it gets dark I dwell perhaps too long on how we all are really just the product of statistical probability. So after I go out of my way to win, who out there must loose and how do I not feel for them? Now to take this conclusion one step farther, how will those who will be taxed for healthcare, my health care, bare the burden. The price can not be too high can it?

Anyway as I reach for my own and our collective bootstraps I fear some one will be crushed in the process and it will most likely not be one of those bank vault cockroaches or one of its cousins. Instead the burden will probably fall of those least able to withstand the blow.

I really am inspired by those who take the time to point others in a direction we would most likely be heading. Thank you.

M. Paul
