I'll Be Your Wingman

Greetings, TPM readers.

Allow me to introduce myself: I'm Lt. Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, US Naval fighter pilot extraordinaire.  I've decided to stop by and offer this man's commentary on our upcoming Presidential election as well as some other matters.

I can see that the majority of you are busily engaging one another over the ongoing Democratic primary at the moment.  While I can see why this would be the case, it's not really what's brought me here.

You see, one way or another the primary will be over soon.  When that happens we'll move on to the full-blown election season.  Personally, I'm looking forward to it.  The Iceman loves a good competition.  However, there's something that this Naval pilot needs to get off of his chest: There is danger afoot.

As a fighter pilot, I've always been cautious.  This is exactly why I had such a hard time warming up to my old rival, Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell.  Maverick was a hot-shot.  In fact, one time I even told him how every time he flew he was putting us at risk.   Right to his face!  Man, that was bad-ass.

Anyhow, eventually I came to realize that behind Maverick's brash approach was a genuine, rock-solid competence in the cockpit.  Sure, I'd still prefer that he would have been a bit more careful at times, but all in all he really had what it took to pull it off.

The problem is that now we've got another hot-shot US Naval pilot in our midst.  People call him a maverick, too.  I'm talking about Senator John McCain.

I'd like to hold out hope that this maverick will eventually prove his worth, the way that my pal Pete did, but the fact is that John McCain's ego is writing checks that our country can't cash.

'Maverick' was a young pilot trying to make a name for himself at the beginning of his career.  Senator McCain, on the other hand, is nearing the end of his career and should know better than to forward out-of-touch economic proposals and outlandish foreign policy plans.  He clearly doesn't understand that we're in a 4g inverted economic dive with enemy MiGs at a distance of 2 meters.  Despite his military service, he seems to be projecting a cavalier attitude toward the dangers being faced by our fellow Americans wearing the uniform and can't seem to keep it straight when it comes to who our enemies are.

So, this is it, Senator John 'Maverick' McCain.  I'm putting you on notice: I don't like you, sir.  I don't like you because you're dangerous.

Iceman out.
