What has happened to Harold Evans?

Has anyone read this?

Harold Evans's op ed in today's Guardian. I was genuinely shocked by it: not just the nastiness and the insane distortions, but the idea that a once great editor could have come to this. Catch these precious thoughts on the US media:

Forget the old notions of objectivity, fairness, thoroughness, and so on. The nastiest rumours on both sides haven't been published, but the coverage has been slavishly on the side of "the one".

Fox News has the vehement Sean Hannity paired with the mildly liberal Alan Colmes, not a fair match, but it has been more willing to investigate than CNN.

Let's hope the consequences of electing "the one" will be as wondrous as the press has led the voters to believe.

This man was editor of The Times and the Sunday Times for chrissake. He knows more about journalism than anyone alive.

I need your help here. What has happened to Harold Evans?

Great piece in today's Observer

An excellent piece by Paul Harris in today's Observer.

I think he's right that many McCain 'supporters' will sit this one out, and that the result will be more emphatic than the poll numbers suggest. What do you southern bloggers think?

A view from England

I live in the UK, but I've been following the US elections with intense interest for months (thank you TPM!). I really do feel the whole future of our benighted planet turns on this result, and the conduct of the campaigns has only heightened that sense.

I find McCain-Palin's political views obnoxious and repellant, but actually this goes way beyond political arguments. What they represent - and there is no other word for it - is evil. These people will say anything that might help get them elected. They have no regard for truth, or morality, or the values of democracy.

The consequence they are now flirting with is so dreadful that I can't bear to name it. But if something were to happen to Obama there would be chaos across the US - which just might play out in their favour. There is no other explanation I can find for the blatant hate-mongering that they are now resorting to.

It's time for all decent Americans, of whatever political persuasion, to speak out, and denounce McCain's vicious campaign of lies and innuendo.

McChickenshit rides in

He's saved the world, just in time! What a hero! Let's hope the good people of Oxford Mississippi give him the welcome he deserves.

I think you lost, Mr McCain

I got a little over-excited last night, and posted the word 'landslide' in the same sentence as 'Obama'. So I better try and stand it up.

Okay, the polls have returned to pretty much where they were before the conventions, but actually everything has changed. Elections are built on strategy - you get that wrong, in a battle as tight as this one, you're going to lose big time.

McCain had one reasonable game plan - to play the sheriff, the steady hand etc. etc. And he's completely, irrevocably blown it. If this is a game of chess, McCain has done the equivalent of giving away his queen. The moose gambit was a dreadful move, and would probably have lost him the election anyway. But in the context of a Wall Street meltdown, it's nothing less than catastrophic.

I'm not talking mass conversions among the McCain crowd - how much convincing do these people need?! - but I do think there's a real chance that an awful lot of them might oversleep on election day. And maybe that's all it will take?

Lonely heart

Am I the only UK citizen completely obsessed with the demented comedy that's unfolding stateside? I can't find anyone to talk to! Never mind. The only thing I'm sorry about is that I won't be in the US on election night.

Obama by a landslide. It's gonna happen.
