If you are referring to what w's administration was doing....hell half of the 'big guys' in that administration came right out of Nixon's Administration or at least were tutored by those who did.

No doubt about that. They did lack the technology that is now available. We weren't this close to 1984 back in 1984 or 1969 e.g.
I'm reading that three fourths of the 'opposition' party thinks Sarah Palin is a good contender in 2012. Whatever the agitprop, I'm convinced the total number of people who are that dim is mathematically insignificant. So even though I walk through the valley of dimwittedtude, I shall fear no evil. They're rude and they're crass and that comforts me.

I agree with dickday's analysis.
while it's true that all governments show signs of paranoia, Nixon's US went WAY beyond the pale.
