Tamping Down Mississippi Enthusiasm For Obama

There are a cadre of folks here in Mississippi that aren't taking the loss to Obama very well.   While it is to be expected that certain of the older rural elements of our state haven't quite gotten up to speed on race relations in the 21st century, the following story about folks in our local PUBLIC school system still shocks me:

But allegations in Mississippi this week have shown tension between the two races is very much alive.

Nsombi Lambright, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi, said she is worried students' free speech has been limited since the election.

"We've been hearing that students have been told they couldn't say the name Barack Obama," Lambright said.

An educator in Madison County has contacted the group but did not want to go forward with allegations for fear of retribution, she said. Lambright urged students and parents to come forward as well.

"This is a historic time for our country, and it's really unfortunate that students aren't able to talk about it," Lambright said.

The bus driver and the coach with the Pearl school district have been disciplined for allegedly telling students not to say the president-elect's name.

"It is unfortunate that some employees mishandled this situation, but they have been disciplined, and I have spent the day clarifying our policies," Superintendent Greg Ladner said in a written statement.

He did not say what form of discipline they received.

I guess I should be happy the offending employees were slapped on the wrist instead of given a promotion?    For the record, Pearl and Madison are both considered to be in the greater Jackson area.  Pearl is 10 miles east, and Madison 15 miles north, of Jackson.

The backlash in Madison is probably due to the 'socialist' tax policies that Obama is pushing.  Madison is the upscale urban yuppie haven around here, while Pearl is still predominantly considered redneck, even by folks in Madison!!   While Mississippi is certainly at the lower end of the economic and wage scales in America,  this Obama animosity in Pearl and Madison is coming out of what are basically URBAN areas of above average income (Mississippi standards...LOL)

I've got a GREAT picture of Pearl Mississippi here.   It's a couple years old and was taken at the Interstate 20 exit for Pearl Mississippi.   I think they finally cleared the area, but this was/is NOT a blighted area, even then.  Mississippi zoning is some of the most WHACK stuff you'll ever see in your lives and remember, this was WITHIN city limits.  All bets are off once you hit the county.....

Very sad to hear about this and other acting out by those who clearly have issues with our electiong of Presiden Elect Obama.

I hope that Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow hear about some of these things. I know a church that was being built was burned down and a cross was burned in someone's yard during the past week... really a sad note and reminder that many americans are afraid and angry about this while a majority of us are filled with joy and gratitude.

Re: that picture and Mississppi zoning-

I might be in the minority but I didn't think there was anything that neede to be "cleared". I guess every area ought have the right to define for itself what kind of zoning or codes they want to pass but I wish generally that folks (not you necessarily) wouldn't get so uptight about things not looking yuppified all the time...

Would you like the bus driver and coach to whipped or caned?

Plantation humor? What's next, Mandingo jokes?

Sure, why not, if we're looking to put a few hundred years of retribution for every stupid comment a white person makes, might as well make it historically correct. Instead of a "slap on the wrist", I suppose the author would like some Brown Sugar treatment.

Go, Progressives, Go!!!

Of course not, how cruel! But they could have been fired, IMO, and that would have been just peachy! No bigots in our public schools! Fire them all!

Okay, and after they all get fired, what next? It's real easy to hate people from the South. They all look like Archie Bunker or Barney Fife, don't they?

Have you ever done anything stupid you were thankful someone showed a bit of forgiveness for?

While Mississippi is certainly at the lower end of the economic and wage scales in America

Fuck euphemisms, Mississippi is usually the rock-bottom poorest state in the union. Has some other state beaten Mississippi to the bottom? That would be hard to believe.

In any case, this is not a story.

Alabama and Louisiana give us a run for the money.

Enjoy.

I wonder if the chief educators in that state can explain what the hell kind of civics lessons these people have been learning all these years?

And what they plan to do to fix it.

user-pic

One of the schools where this was happening is also the location of our area's most famous schoolkid gone wild shooting spree.

I'd have to say that civics and civil behavior are sadly missing from the curriculum in many Mississippi public schools. What's not missing??? ALL MANNER OF PRAYERS and other religious nonsense in our PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Enjoy.
