Week of February 18, 2007 - February 24, 2007

Merci mille fois à Thomas Jefferson

Thanks to Rules of the House, penned in 1787 by Thomas Jefferson, Washington is one of a group of states where a serious effort is underway to pass joint legislative resolutions that would put impeachment back on the table at the House.  If enough states pass joint resolutions to initiate impeachment proceedings, it may force Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats to take up impeachment hearings.

David Lindorff reported yesterday in Impeachment: Breaking the Dam in Olympia, Washington:

The significance of the gathering in Olympia is that a freshman senator from Olympia, Eric Oemig, has introduced a bill in the state senate calling for such a resolution. His bill, S6018, is slated to go to a hearing on March 1, to determine whether it can be considered by the full senate, and impeachment activists are planning to have hundreds-perhaps thousands-of backers on hand to make sure it gains committee approval.

Dave Lindorff, a columnist for Counterpunch, co-authored  his latest book with Barbara Olshanshky, is The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office (St. Martin's Press, May 2006).

Ash Wednesday Prayer to Jesus

Too late have I loved you, O Beauty so ancient, O Beauty so new. Too late have I loved you!  You were within me but I was outside myself, and there I sought you! In my weakness I ran after the beauty of the things you have made. You were with me, and I was not with you. The things you have made kept me from you - the things which would have no being unless they existed in you! You have called, you have cried, and you have pierced my deafness. You have radiated forth, you have shined out brightly, and you have dispelled my blindness. You have sent forth your fragrance, and I have breathed it in, and I long for you. I have tasted you, and I hunger and thirst for you. You have touched me, and now I burn for your peace.

National Impeachment Push Announced

Here's a follow-up from the Vermont Guardian on the emergency conference to impeach President War Mouth, held over the weekend in New York City:

Impeach the president now, before a new war is started was the message underlining a meeting of 18 national peace and impeachment groups in New York on Feb. 17, according to organizers and participants.

The next two months will see a flurry of impeachment actions nationwide. The groups who took part in the meeting endorsed initiatives ranging from town meeting resolutions to holding mass demonstrations.

Represented at the meeting were The World Can’t Wait, organizers of the Vermont Town Meeting Day impeachment resolutions, Cindy Sheehan — Camp Casey, Gold Star Families for Peace, After Downing Street, United Methodist Church, Hip Hop Caucus, Progressive Democrats of America, ImpeachBush.org, ANSWER, Code Pink, Democrats.com, Climate Crisis Coalition, Green Party, Traprock Peace Center, Consumers for Peace, Just Foreign Policy, and A 28, as well as individual writers, producers and activists.

A march on the Pentagon is scheduled for March 17, calling for an end to the war and impeachment. Last week, representatives from 60 college campuses conferred to organize students to come out in large numbers. On April 28, additional impeachment demonstrations and actions will take place across the country.

The groups also endorsed a series of impeachment town meeting to occur across the country. These will range from debates and discussions to actual citizen hearings with witnesses, testimony and voting for (or against if they so decide) articles of impeachment. These articles would then be sent to Congress.

The Hip Hop Caucus, Books Not Bombs, and Iraq Veterans Against the War announced a national tour of rallies and events, targeting younger citizens in urban communities and on college campuses to take action against war. The tour is currently scheduled for 12 cities between March 19 and April 21 and is still adding dates to the schedule.

Bush Bombs in Peoria Diner

President War Mouth's charm intiative gets the freeze in Peoria:

Many patrons found their pancakes more interesting. Except for the click of news cameras and the clang of a dish from the kitchen, the quiet was deafening.

In town to deliver remarks on the economy, the president walked into the diner, where he was greeted with what can only be described as a sedate reception. No one rushed to shake his hand. There were no audible gasps or yelps of excitement that usually accompany visits like this.

“Sorry to interrupt you,” Bush said to a group of women, who were sitting in a booth with their young kids. “How’s the service?” As Bush signed a few autographs and shook hands, a man sitting at the counter lit a cigarette and asked for more coffee. Another woman, eyeing Bush and his entourage, sighed heavily and went back to her paper. She was reading the obituaries. “Sorry to interrupt your breakfast,” a White House aide told her. “No problem,” she huffed, in a not-so-friendly way. “Life goes on, I guess.”
