Outing the Lies: Let's make a list!

This is a Group Blog.  To succeed it needs your help:  To tell the truth - about lies.

I know you're sick of hearing these lies over and over.  Especially the ones that have been completely disproved - like Iraq attacking us on 9/11 and possessing WMD.

But we need an accounting of these lies.  And to do it in a way that we can stomach, I've come up with some ways to be creative and maybe even "have fun" - well, as fun as it can be, given that the subject is lies and the lying liars that tell them.

So here are some suggestions and parameters  (if you need any):

  • How many lies can we come up with - that have been told over and over, in spite of being disproved?
  • What are the top serial lies?
  • Who are the top serial liars?
  • Can you find video or other evidence of actual lying?
  • Write:  a haiku or a limerick or other poem about the lie or liars.
  • Write a sentence about the lie or liars, starting:  "It was a dark and story night...."  (Review rules here.)
  • Chime in with an Amen or a cosign or simply an expletive.
    (Refresher course on the acceptable ad hominum attack, here.)

Blog credits (etc):

Request for this blog, thanks to CVille Dem.  Creative ideas, due to Eric Wattree's prose-poem Flight Suit George and to wwstabler and dikkdayPlease comment below.  For the blog's success is in the comments section.

Finally to put you in the right mood to make your list and do your thing, I'd like to quote from Eric's introduction:
The revisionists are out in force in an attempt to rewrite history...  But fortunately, the internet is brutally tenacious in recording how the vast majority of Americans really feel about this eminently corrupt and incompetent abomination of American governance. So let us set the record straight--not for vengeance, but for posterity.

Not to forget....  Although most of us would like to believe a Dem has never told a lie, this is not true.  And we have to face it.  Example:  I did not have sex with that woman.

Also, if tempted to the ad hominum attack, review the rules first.

Ok.  You have your missionAnd have fun too!

It was a dark and stormy night. In reality, it was high noon; the sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky. However the rules dictate I start with something about it being dark and stormy, so there you go. The End

Sarah Palin tops the list as being the worse and biggest liar in a presidential campaign. It only took her three days after she was introduced as McCain’s a running mate to start the abominable lying ball rolling. The infamous “Bridge To Nowhere” was her glaring claim to fame. She said she opposed it, although, records show she strongly supported it and accepted money to build it. Negative publicity caused her to change her tune and she didn’t give the money back. Does that make her a twofer, a liar and a thief? Or is that wishful thinking on my part?

user-pic

Hmmm.... very well done lie - incorporated into "a dark and storm night"! I think you get extra credit for that.

SP - in the running for worst and biggest liar in a presidential campaign!

user-pic

Yeaaaaah, extra credit and I promise to use it responsibly. Thank You.:)

This was a blog I did on an editorial by turd blossom in WSJ in January.

It praised w for:

52 months of economic growth
Keeping our country safe since 9/11/01
Taking on two wars he never could have predicted

Along with many other lies. The point of my blog of course was that w had planned the war in Iraq a couple years before he ever got into office.

I will come up with more later.

user-pic

Excellent dd. Due to your prescience, you wrote your submission on Jan 22 - even before CVille Dem requested this blog. I'm impressed! :)

"Good lie" submissions!

user-pic

Sorry folks. I mean to click comments and accidentally clicked rec'd. :(

user-pic

P.S. That was a true confession! (not a lie)

user-pic

George Bush telling the country that he gave Cheney permission to release the name of Valerie Plame to Scooter Libby, thereby inoculating him from prosecution/impeachment. Then turning around and refusing to pardon Libby, because he was pissed at what they did, without telling him!

user-pic

Well done! A lie and a betrayal - all at once!

user-pic

Is this list to be by administration or all lies since, well, decades ago? The most recent to me is Dodd two days ago saying he did not insert the infamous clause in the AIG legislation. Does it count since yesterday he 'fessed up?

user-pic

You know. I think there's no rule on that. Indeed, there really isn't a rule on anything. It's a List. And apparently the Dodd doings are fuzzy - since he didn't voluntarily make the change, but did it under extreme pressure.

You be the judge!

As for when the lies occurred, I don't think we need to go back to Jacob stealing his brother's birthright via a lie.

Recent. Whatever that means. (I really hate rules, don't you?)

user-pic

dick cheney ....pick a lie..
or
donald rumsfeld for saying "we know where the weapons are, they're north, south, east, west of tikrit"

user-pic

Great comment by rumsfeld!

And you're asserting that all words of cheney are lies?

user-pic

Or that cheney is a top liar, I bet that's it!

user-pic

well, there were those 935 Bush administration lies documented by some media org, right? I thought there was a site dedicated to listing all the lies but it may have been scrubbed. I can only find this reference to it, but it's a start:

http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/74715/

user-pic

And that was just to sell the war! Gosh, how many other lies has he told? Like: We do not torture.

user-pic

John Edwards denial of affair.

Hillary Clinton - 'Right wing conspiracy'
(Some may disagree about this being a lie, but despite recent turn of events with her - I do think at the time it was said, that she knew better.)

And the mother of 'em all - Bush et al. about WMD's in Iraq!

Just a start........

user-pic

And a good start it is!

user-pic

- Ari Fleisher saying that Saddam Hussain was behind 911

- John McCain saying he chose the most qualified person he could find to be his VP running mate

- Joe Lieberman saying anything at all

- Barack Obama when he says he likes Joe Lieberman

- Eric Cantor when he said the Stimulus Bill (which he admits he hasn't read) includes a train from Disney to Las Vegas.

- People who deny global warming

- Everyone who says that Plame was not a covert CIA agent

- Senator Craig when he says he's not gay

- John Cramer when he says he was a victim of liars

-Karl Rove -- He doesn't even have to open his mouth. He is a walking lie.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- THE BIG LIE: The one that started the Iraq War
a. the State of the Union Lie about centrifuges
b. the mushroom cloud lie when they knew it was all faked
c. mission accomplished
- THE NEW, IMPROVED BIG LIE:
a. we went to Iraq to free their people
b. we went to Iraq to give their people democracy
c. the surge worked
d. we did a good thing, and the Iraqis are so grateful
e. all the other countries thought they had WMD's too
user-pic
CVille, you're going to win the comment with the most lies! (unless somebody can top this!)
Great List! Definitely worth all my efforts to put up this blog!
Thank you! Kudos!
user-pic
Really good summary of lies, LIES, and they have not stopped repeating most of them Cville.
AMAZING DISGRACE
HOW CORRUPT YOU ARE
TO KEEP THE OLD LINE
EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE GONE
YOU ONCE WERE INS
AND NOW YOU'RE OUTS
AND YOU PISSED ALL OVER
OUR COUNTRY
user-pic
Amazing Disgrace!
Very good, dd!
user-pic
"This is a man who pals around with a domestic terrorist who targeted his own country!"
user-pic
Oooh.... we're supposed to guess! Could it be w?
Or are we supposed to guess who said this?
Ok, you get extra credit for inventing a new game!
user-pic
who?? George Bush? ohhh yeah the bushes did hang out with the bin laden
user-pic
ooops i misunderstood....
I'm guessing SP
user-pic
Ooohh, I bet you're right! Yes, I recall her saying that. (glad you didn't write the whole name. I try to avoid that too!)
user-pic
ding ding ding! Give toni his choice of prizes...will it be the stuffed moose, or the lipsticked pig?
user-pic
Brand spanking new lie here. Boehner says financial industry was never deregulated.
http://www.dailykostv.com/w/001030/
BLITZER: He seemed to be saying, all those Republicans who want a free market, who want to deregulate, who want the government off the back of these huge corporations, look what they're -- look what we got as a result of all of that.
BOEHNER: Wolf, you have to understand, there was no deregulation of anything in the financial services industries. As a matter of fact, there was an increase in regulation.
user-pic
Well, honestly, you get extra credit for a brand spanking new lie! Wow!
Here is the proof that these folks forget the web at their peril. As I said yesterday.
And kudos to tpmgary for proving yet again - that liars have failed to take the web into account!
user-pic
Looks like we're waiting on how far back it goes that Geithner knew about the bonuses? Thus a lie about a time line. Please post it here, once it "comes out".
user-pic
Here are some lies just off the top of my head:
Autoworkers make $73/hour
Our medical system is the best in the world
Republicans are for smaller and more limited government
Liberals can't win elections (just ask Russ Feingold, Barney Frank, Henry Waxman, and Bernie Sanders)
Labor Unions have too much power
user-pic
Great impromptu list, oleeb! Come back later with more if you like!
user-pic
Good, good Oleeb. That really pissed me off. Right now there are workers making 14 bucks an hour and bill orally is still lying about that hourly rate.
A guy that makes 10 grand an hour.
Good I get mad.
user-pic
Did you read Gail Collins today? It's about getting mad!
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/19/opinion/19collins.html?_r=1
user-pic
Not to take your time, but Gail did one of these two or three months ago. I smiled at that one too.
user-pic
I've always loved her writing. When she left doing a column to become editorial page editor, I sent her a personal note. And sent me a personal note in return! I just love her! She really cracks me up! I feel we could be friends. She's very unpretentious and down to earth.
user-pic
Here's a newly minted lie. Via Jane Hamsher at FDL:
http://firedoglake.com/2009/03/19/bonus-coverage-cummings-continues-asking-aig-the-questions-that-geithner-should-have-long-ago/
Liddy told Rep. Cummings that he had authorized 158 retention bonuses, but that turned out not to be true when he had to testify under oath yesterday. Liddy revealed that he had personally authorized between 4500 and 4700 bonuses, and that didn't include bonuses that may have been authorized by other managers at AIG
user-pic
See here as well:
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/03/19/aig/index.html
This is getting pretty close to criminal here. If it's not already way past the line!
There are lies. And there are criminal lies, to hide fraud, theft, conspiracy and god knows what else!
user-pic
hmm, so many lies, they need to be categorized, perhaps by person, or by most popular, or lie most likely to succeed, best executed with sub-categories of best straight face or best feign of outrage
(Now I've made a comment without adding a lie to the discussion, think quick, oh, Rice was on Charlie Rose just last night and claims that she never tried to link 9/11 with Saddam/Iraq, no, too old a lie, theraP won't like, um, need quick lie, oh, traskradio was my idea!
user-pic
I like the lie about rice! very good! Old lies are fine!
user-pic
So many to choose from and so little time. Ten years from now investigations will continue.
But, I do believe that the single biggest lie over the last eight plus years, goes something like this:
The events of 9/11/01 spurred our president to take all measures necessary to protect our country and led to our invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Others underline WMDs and fake nukes and ....
O'Neill the conservative Secretary of the Treasury said that in the last week of January, 2001, w said to a meeting of cabinet officials involved in National Security, that "We're goin into Iraq, find a way."
Prior to that, on his inauguration day in 2001, Clinton states he attempted to discuss some national security issues with w and w said, it does not matter the first thing we are going to do is invade Iraq. And Clinton, who did not hold a lot of credibility at that time, was telling the truth.
On September 12, 2001, Rummy turned to an aide and said "Well, I guess he has found a way." while surveying the destruction at the Pentagon.
It seems to me that this discloses 'intent' prior to any attack on this country.
THE END
user-pic
Yup! You may win the BINGO of the day!
user-pic
Goldman Sachs has maintained that it got no bailout money from the Treasury.
Goldman Sachs has received $13bn in bailout money. It was delivered via AIG, an indirect route.
I'm wondering if this goes to your post of yesterday, TheraP, where the players are unaware of just how many people are listening that now have the resources to fact-check actions and statements.
Did Paulson realize last September that providing this alternate route for large investment firms and banks to receive bailout money would indeed be discovered?
user-pic
Technically, that should be Paulson and Geithner in the last paragraph. Also attending the AIG bailout meeting was Lloyd Blankenfein, the current CEO of Goldman Sachs.
Is it possible that the rarefied air on Wall Street has no clue about the Internet air on Main Street?
user-pic
PS to TheraP (OT) -
The Senate Judiciary Committee sent Dawn Johnsens' nomination to the Senate today. The vote was 11-7, with all Republicans except Specter voting against.
user-pic
Thanks, seashell. It's good news, but also worrying news. I'm just praying this gets passed. You know how much I'm focused on this1
user-pic
I sure agree. If you drew a diagram of this whole fiasco and the players, Goldman Sachs has tentacles that reach into every official who has been in on these decisions and stands to gain both by the failure of one large corporation as well as from the money and influence.
user-pic
You know when I heard the spin, probably on mornin joke with judghead, it did not ring true. And you tied it together because I recall hearing this yesterday? Very very good Seashell. I am surprised someone has not blogged just on this point.
user-pic
As a history teacher I must include Richard Nixon's "I am not a crook."
user-pic
That lie ranks up there! Thanks!
user-pic
The last eight years were not "reality-based," so it's impossible to choose. But the lie told as they went out the door was a doozy:
With nod and wink a contract made
In smoke-filled room behind closed door
"We’ll raze the house if we don’t get paid,"
The actual looters demanded more
"Just tell the suckers one big lie-
The whole economy will surely crash
And you and yours will starve and die
Unless you bring us heaps of cash"
user-pic
Excellent! And behind all of that, the crashing of the economy - geared to taking down the next administration and paving the way for the crooks to return.
Well done!
user-pic
"Barack has said in the last week that he really liked the ideas of the Republicans over the last 10 to 15 years, and we can give you the exact quote." -Hillary Clinton
"You won't hear me forget to mention hydro[electric power] any more." -Barack Obama
Both of those really bother me. Because I like both of them.
user-pic
The biggest lie of all....(although, on the surface, it may not seem so)
Electronic voting is safe, reliable and secure
http://www.bradblog.com/?p=7001
"Five Clay County officials, including the circuit court judge, the county clerk, and election officers were arrested Thursday after they were indicted on federal charges accusing them of using corrupt tactics to obtain political power and personal gain.
The 10-count indictment, unsealed Thursday, accused the defendants of a conspiracy from March 2002 until November 2006 that violated the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). RICO is a federal statute that prosecutors use to combat organized crime. The defendants were also indicted for extortion, mail fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy to injure voters' rights and conspiracy to commit voter fraud.
According to the indictment, these alleged criminal actions affected the outcome of federal, local, and state primary and general elections in 2002, 2004, and 2006."
How else was the moron elected in 2000?
user-pic
How about this lie - that Obama would have an administration that's more "transparent"? He said in his campaign "sunshine before signing" but that was a big farce. How about no more pork? Also a lie. Gee, I guess all presidents lie!
user-pic
Hey Bill....
The Pork is not the presidents lie. Blame should be assigned appropriately, on congress.
And as for transparency?
How do things compare to the most recent previous administration?
Keep obfuscating yourself.
Right into irrelevance.
user-pic
Another list of commonly repeated lies:
Saddam Hussein had something to do with Al Qaeda and 9/11
Saddam Hussein has WMD's and was working on a nuclear weapon
Islamic extremists "hate our freedom"
Government is the problem
God hates gay people
Creationism is scientific and evolution is "only" a "theory"
Abortion is murder
The second amendment provides for unfettered private gun ownership
Roads are worth building adn we can provide unlimited subsidies for them but mass transit isn't worth building because it doesn't pay for itself
High incomes and low taxes on the rich provides the incentive to work, invest, and innovate.
Government spending didn't get us out of the great depression. It was war spending.
user-pic
"Roads are worth building and we can provide unlimited subsidies for them but mass transit isn't worth building because it doesn't pay for itself"
"High incomes and low taxes on the rich provides the incentive to work, invest, and innovate."
"Government spending didn't get us out of the great depression. It was war spending."
These are golden lies of the conservative movement. The core hypocrisy of it all can leave one "God Smacked"!
user-pic
Biggest lie recently was Bernake and Paulson telling congress to pass the TARP now or financial armageddon will occur. Another is that the US is not in Iraq because of oil. Huge whopper from way back in the early 1980s, that the unitary executive powers mean that in time of was the president is above the law. The other is that the president doesn't need congress to declare war. Last but not least "We are in a war on terror?"
user-pic
Well Zeno, humankind has been in a war on terror for at least five thousand years. It will never end. So why not use it to scare the bejesus out of everybody and take away their rights. Good points.
user-pic
"It's an absurd insinuation."
George W. Bush, when asked about Howard Dean's musing that the administration had advanced knowledge of 9/11:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLFWhyttlmU
user-pic
The conflation of 9/11 with war instead of crimes against humanity. Calling the Geneva Conventions "quaint." The "Osama video."
That's a few recent whoppers. But the biggest lie of all is manifest destiny... That somehow this nation is the best of all possible nations and has the responsibility to protect, tame, and domesticate the entire world via military force and trade manipulation. That lie underlines our collective stupidity in world and domestic affairs.
user-pic
TheraP
I'm normally just a lurker here but your list challenge and the great responses so far has compled me too add my 2 cents worth.
#1 the "Trickle Down Economy" model lie. You want to see tax breaks stimulate the economy give them all to the bottom 2/3rds of the tax bracket...those people spend money to buy everyday things like food, utilities, cars,etc. THAT creates demand all across the board not just the upper 1/10 of 1% who increase demand in yatchs and luxury cars.
#2 The "Retention Bonus" lie. "We must pay these bonuses or we will loose our best and brightest talent." HUH, loose the guys that created the house of cards credit default swaps in the first place? And just who in the financial sector is hiring all these "bright" people right now? There's a whole bunch of folks sitting out there with Lehman Bro's on their resumes just hoping for an opening...and they wer bright folks too.
OK so I won't win a prize but I suspect these two are a pair of snowballs that have yet to roll all the way to the bottom of this very long financial hill we're perched on.
Look Out Below
user-pic
Frequent Insidious Lies:
Political parties are inevitable.
..there's never going to be peace on earth. (cite: U2 'I'm so sick of hearing that..')
The two party system is the worst system there is except for all the rest.
Capitalism's failures make socialism inevitable.
"Pro-choice"
"The God that wasn't there."
