Thera,
Perhaps food fight should be changed to 'garbage disposal'?
Just a suggestion.

Oh, I misunderstood! I thought we were here to throw food! I came w/ a whole bag of organic kula greens (which soured way too fast) nasty pineapples, moldy mangoes, and a few upcountry tomatoes...guess I'll have to find a compost pit...bummer.

Well, it started out labeled the "food fight" blog, but Aunt Sam had a better term. Sorry you didn't get to throw your food, my dear. Sorry to disappoint. I do hate to disappoint.

Thera, thanks much for link.
But, here's the good news/bad news...
The post is great but it became obvious that you have a stalker.
May be time for TPM to implement restraining orders.

I'm now of the belief that you should post a garbage disposal blog everyday!
Whatcha' think?

Or we could take turns.... But I could step up to the plate. Which do you prefer?

Whoever gets there first I guess?!?
The following is almost schizo! He's ranting because people dare to read and repeat what he posts!............
And now people are collecting and using this data.
And showing their real behavior, especially when I ask them not to.
But I thank you for showing how rotten your souls are.

What a great idea TheraP, if I say so myself. Like minds and all... you know.
Ya' know I established a little hide-away back in 2007 for a "dump."
You can find it here:
If anyone is interested, please feel free to "drop" in over there and check it out.

You do great service here, OGD! :)

If it doesn't work as hoped, at least it's a potentialy entertaining place to go. It offers, if not highlights the fact that now one can easily find, a convenient compilation of dramatic discourse with little muss or fuss.
Any publicity is good publicity.

Interesting passive/aggressive and somewhat superior tone by our Mommy Thera-pee
"Yes, there are some who are bent on disruption, while the vast majority are working hard to change things in positive ways. It's heartening that so much positivity is in evidence.
For those who are reading and haven't yet jumped in, don't let the distractions hinder that. Add your voices and let's get our country back on track, as the majority voted to do. :-)"

Why are we intent on limiting the discourse by labeling some posts as "garbage" and heaping scorn on posters we disagree with? Sure YIKES can be a bit much, but this is the Cafe, where diverse opinions are welcome, no?
In any event, I always thought the best move was to ignore comments you think go too far. This new activist streak is a bit stifling and somewhat jack-booted. Overall, it seems to be slightly contrary to the noble purpose of the blog, blogger and her followers.
This is just an opinion of course. I figured I'd save you the trouble of copying and pasting and just post it here. Quite obviously, this is where you prefer to quarantine anything that smells remotely like disagreement.
I feel I should add that I absolutely love and agree with yours' and StillI's post. But I think you raise people's hackles when you shut down debate. This country was founded on opposition to conventional wisdom, after all.

Did I mention I love the post, and don't want to be cast out of the circle? If it helps, my business is tanking, and I'm likely to be out of a job within a few months.

You know, I'm all for free speech - in the public square. But this is private space. Our blogs are like private space. I think if you went back to any of my blogs, you would see that I don't object in any way to differences of opinion. But uncivil behavior is something that the workplace does not permit, most hosts don't permit, and so on. It's a matter of civility, not of squelching dissent.
And why would I cut and paste a comment of yours? Even the one you posted above? I see nothing uncivil in your words, dorn.
As for joining the "circle" - do you mean you want to help with posting a garbage disposal blog? Be our guest!
I'm sorry to hear about your potential job loss, dorn. I really am. We all need to circle the wagons and help each other out - if only through collaborating to understand things and make the world a better place.
Have you read this by artappraiser a bit back?

I think that is an excellent discussion of why there needs to be some type of "moderation" at places like this.
We can differ over that. But also consider this:

That may open your eyes.

P.S. If you look above, the idea for "garbage disposal" came from Aunt Sam. I had originally called this "food fights."

Okay, I'll take the hit. However, this is my rationale for 'garbage disposal'....
When one chooses to hijack a post with the intent to not only circumvent, but disrupts the flow of positive communication with rants and (in my opinion) irrational declarations that quickly evolve into personal attacks, well, THAT IS GARBAGE.
The garbage, too often, not only disrupts but oft times destroys the opportunity for all to positively interact on the subject at hand.
Those who dump the garbage should (in my opinion)create their own posts about the subject/topic they interject into the original post.
Continuing to 'hijack' the original post is disrespectful and interfers with positive, thoughtul discourse about the original topic (as intended by author). And that's garbage (again, my opinion).
Many invest alot of time and energy into their research and creating their posts. When someone else tries to use it (ongoing) as a bully pulpit for their own issues, this is garbage and should be disposed.
And to be accurate, as in Thera's post, this was initially started to divert anothers intent to do exactly what I've described.

"Ask Aunt Sam" - Could be a weekly blog, wherein the gentle reader (or readress, as in poetess) presents queries. And Aunt Sam chooses one or some to answer.
That was super explanation, Aunt Sam! And I trust when you do the next iteration of the garbage disposal blog (garbage... as the french would say!), you might simply begin your post with that comment, which already lies at hand!
Seems to me that if people move a comment to this kind of thread, they may be more able to ignore responding on the actual thread. And that limits the distractions.
February 9, 2009 1:16 PM | Reply | Permalink
Thera,
Unfortunately, there will always be those who will continue to choose to bully, attack and misrepresent within the posts here. They will condemn and berate any viable option to divert their rants to a more applicable space.
Until they receive no response or acknowledgement on the hijacked site, they will persevere.
But, I still endorse posting their attempts on a garbage disposal site too.
As for 'Ask Aunt Sam', can only imagine some of the queries.
February 9, 2009 1:37 PM | Reply | Permalink
It was a joke really - to ask Aunt Sam. ;)
But you rose to the occasion admirably!
Yes, I know it's the human condition we're in here. And some will spend their free time in ways such as ranting, bullying, attacking, misrepresenting - as you put it. Kinda sad actually. But there it is.

What do you think of Recycle Bin? Perhaps some wouldd consider garbage disposal a bit harsh.
Trash Mash?
Pooper Scooper?
Okay, altogether silly except for perhaps Recycle Bin?
Let me know please.

Aunt Sam:
Sorry, I've been a bit busy this afternoon.
Things are maybe quieter? Maybe the calm before the storm?
Compost heap
recycle? .. not sure, that presumes it's something good and should be passed on for reuse...
Oooh, I like pooper scooper. Or trash mash...

Here's what I've concluded. We'll open the garbage disposal blog (or whatever the term is) as needed. Today is much quieter. Not much garbage to be seen - or not in my purview anyway.
If we do see something, then we open the blog specifically for that purpose. (but maybe, by a miracle, we'll have a respite!)

Hello,
My name is Kyle. I am an intern for TPMCafe. I spoke to TheraP about some of these issues recently.
Thank you all for your help and support. This is what makes the TPM community work!
Whenever you hit "Report Abuse" an email is sent to myself (and a few others here on staff) with the comment in question. We get a lot of these everyday (usually there are many reports for a single, especially egregious comment). We have a lot going on here, as you can imagine, so we try to work on the comments monitoring as much as we can, but we are limited as you can imagine. Furthermore, we moved offices last week, so we are getting caught up on things around here. I apologize for a lag in cleaning things like this up.
I hope you all understand. Again, thank you all very much for your contributions to the TPM community; you are TPM!

I already recommended the blog, yesterday. But I had nothing to really add until you showed up.
Once again, I am so pleased that the folks who own and run TPM check in with the bloggers. This really impresses me.

Kyle, thank-you for this response. I am loathe to report abuse for anything other than what I perceive to be unconscionable spam, and am fully cognizant that I have a very broad-spectrum definition of spam, so am willing to message once and forget.
It would be improper for me to report abuse for other reasons, because I am a paleo-geek who has been wired far longer than the vast majority of internet users. I can state with authority, that Google Groups does not possess a complete USENET archive, and for personal reasons am partially gladdened by this. I am thick-skinned, as well as experienced in matters of trolling, flaming (inverses implied: counter-trolling/retaliatory_flaming) and am able to easily morph into other manifestations of missBehavior. I wouldn't be in the kitchen if unable take the heat. Reporting abuse other than spam would be more than a mite bit hypocritical for me.
However, TPM Cafe is a place of great potentiality in collaborative web-adventuring. I also derive great satisfaction, and enlightenment from discussions using the open methods of TPM's forums. Very significant reasons for the high valuation I place upon TPM is its relative absence of non-sequiturs, ad hominems and ditto-head inanities, as well as its low membership frequency of trollboi_wannabes, who are legends only in their own minds. These are contributory factors that have immensely expanded dialog, warmly welcoming members who are not inherently competitive.
PseudoAnonymity is an important part of net interactions, and they do not necessarily devolve into personal nastiness. Even were TPM to institute a policy of real identity, do you actually believe you could stop me from assuming a more realistic fictional netcitizenry? I keep several active POP3 boxes for this purpose that are nothing other than spamtraps for site sign-ups. At the same time, I vehemently detest sock puppetry, and they are personally sworn enemies. They are vilely self-aggrandizing, oft-times hate-spewers, and engage in many kinds of nihilistic destructiveness. They do not serve to illuminate and expand the brilliance of creative synthesis.
Attempting to separate wheat from the chaff, to discern what constitutes trollishness as opposed to honest dissent on a site such as this is an unenviable task, and I am grateful you are tasked with it, instead of me. If in the course of this responsibility, you feel compelled to delete any of my commentary, I'll not complain, as I am well-aware that it is far too easy for me to step over lines drawn into the datastreams.
thanks again.
