Comments Enabled! -- hrebendorf, I love you!

Just a short fun blog in answer to hrebendorf's "comments disabled" blog.  So people can post in reaction to that.  Or to this.  Or to anything!

There's no point in linking to hrebendorf's blog post - as comments are disabled.  Plus there's nothing there!

Confession:  I did rec'd hrebendorf's blog.  For the fun of it.  But in case you're wondering!

Have fun!

So now you've been sucked in to the maelstrom. Say goodbye to all you know and love.

user-pic

Well, to begin with I had to say goodbye to hrebendorf's blog.... as it's disappeared! And indeed, I may disappear this too!

If so, Tom, say goodbye to your comment as it's not long for this world!

user-pic

I didn't mean to publish that, but I love you too, TheraP. :) I was just going to point out that TPM has now added the "Comments Disabled" status to the Recent Reader Posts list (thanks, Al!), but then I decided that it probably wasn't worth an entire post. So I just commented on it in Tom Wright's blog. But even though I didn't intend to post it, and closed the window without saving it, it posted anyway. Oh, this is so confusing...

Anyway, I like the new feature. On the day Seaton decides to enable comments again, maybe I'll decide to click the link and read what he has to say. Until then, his posts are invisible to me.

Still, I find it completely outrageous that David thinks he can retain the right to comment on other peoples' posts. As far as I'm concerned, you're either a member of the community or you're not.

"Still, I find it completely outrageous that David thinks he can retain the right to comment on other peoples' posts. As far as I'm concerned, you're either a member of the community or you're not."

You're too doctrinaire given your recent polite exchange with the guy. Yeah, he's a putz but so are the overlords who enable his totalitarian impulses.

Although it isn't evident much here or on his mirror blog, David Seaton does have opinions about other issues that don't involve his obsession with The ONE or pomposities about American political realities.

It's a shame, really.

I would be interested in his take on the Spanish reaction to Obama, for instance. It must gall him no end that Zapatero practically gushed with happiness at the election outcome.

user-pic

Spanish take on Obama! They're thrilled! (this direct from many, many Spanish inlaws)

user-pic

Well, perhaps we should just consider this to be an open thread. A discussion about the value of open discussion. I like it!

user-pic

When we're done talking about that can we talk about the process that we engage in to decide what to talk about?

user-pic

I can foresee a kind of recursive loop ....

Should we have a discussion of whether or not I disappear this post? And the thought process that goes into that decision? And whether or not to actually posts one's thoughts about it? Or just the decision?

Or should we see what happens on this thread and just go with it?

user-pic

You've put it into the universe. Can't pull back now. I'm merely making an observation. I think process is important, but this group really seems to love talking about it. :)

user-pic
Can't pull back now.

Oh, no coitus interruptus, eh? Now we're into protecting the potential lifeforms that may have been propagated by hrebendorf and I in our (brief) blog intercourse.... (when the two blogs were side by side)

The ethics of blog posts: Must they stay up? Or can someone simply get rid of other posters' comments by disappearing the whole blog?

I'm sure we can generate endless posts and comments. We, intellectuals and parsers and gray area persons that we are!

Perhaps we could do a seance and invoke the specter of Wittgenstein. And get his perspective on these language games.

user-pic

Yeah, I think you could delete this entire thread by simply deleting the post. AFAIC, once a post is up and has been commented on, you shouldn't be able to take it down. That should be the sole province of the site Admin. Ain't my site, though, so what the hell do I know?

user-pic

I am totally willing to delete the entire thread. But it seems you also believe I should leave it up, due to illustrious comments already posted here. Since this blog is a tribute to you, I will abide by that suggestion.

This is an interesting time of year. Levity prevails! Last year we celebrated Ticia's birthday and the lead-up to it. And we had a lot of fun with the Cafe Saloon - wherein we worked on getting Josh elected Mayor of the Universe. And all sorts of other humor.

user-pic

Yeah, we're all just sort of marking time, aren't we? Waiting, waiting, waiting until we have a real president again. Soon...

user-pic

Waiting to exhale.... aren't we?

user-pic

If I didn't think there were already ample threads addressing the topic, I'd post a new one:

"How do you keep the TPM Cafe busy? (For the answer, click comments.)"

Then, I'd disable the comments.

user-pic

I love that! Save it for a rainy day!

user-pic

Ooohhh! I like this even better. Can you generate comments and THEN disable comments? How utterly diabolical.

user-pic

Not sure. We may have to try it!

user-pic

I tried it. It works! The comments that were posted stay there - even if comments are "disabled" - which would truly confuse many people, I think!

user-pic

Yeah, quinn esq sneaked on in on Seaton this morning. Don't mess with quinn.

An empty post with disabled comments -- what a depressing metaphor for our economy.

I think I need a drink.

user-pic

Not only that, but the empty post with disabled comments is also GONE!

Have another drink!

user-pic

What happened to Boyd Reed's post on Saturday about the ridiculousness of MSM? How long are these posts supposed to stay up? Some good ideas were being exchanged such as re-introducing "From the Horses Mouth", which had been discontinued in the Spring due to the election.

user-pic

The remain less than 24 hours. The time they are published is the time they will perish... on the very next day.

That's why it's important to 'follow' people. That way you can at least get back to their blog and locate the post!

user-pic

Interesting posts like that are what the community post is for, if people could get used to using it!

If you see an interesting conversation forming in a post that isn't getting rec'd, link it on the community post, then it will be up for longer.

user-pic

I feel like we all have entirely too much time on our hands all of a sudden, and I'm still not a completely functional person yet...

About the time I think I'm going to take a TPM break, someone like Thera or Orlando come up with completely thought provoking pieces that reinforce the fact that I am hopelessly addicted to this place and I'll be here every single day, many times a day whether we're discussing vitally important things or being silly or ragging on who's doing whatever stupid thing with whoever...I love you guys...even that crazy buunycat!

Thank you for being here even when there is no reason to be!

user-pic

I love you back, stillidealistic! And I feel the very same way. I want to take a break. But I get pulled back by wonderful people! Indeed, right now it seems like we've pared back to a core group, which, for once, is having a great deal of fun after so much pressure and stress. And in addition to the fun - there's such a flowering of creativity and wisdom and problem-solving strategies for how to deal with different posters and so on.

Yes, isn't it wonderful to be here - even when there's no reason to be? That, I think, may be the definition of friendship.
