Capitol Hill - Criminals and Good Guys - I Can't Tell the Difference
In as much as most people would categorize a criminal as someone who brings them harm in some way I am having a difficult time telling the criminals from the good guys. That I am referring to things going on in our nations capitol is very alarming.
Right now we are lucky if we can get a third of U.S. Senators to support a healthcare reform package or a financial reform package which truly supports the majority of citizens in a way where those citizens interests come first.
Of what value is legislation that is disadvantageous to the majority?
How can we have a majority of senators who actually favor legislation that is disadvantageous to the majority of citizens?
What possible reason could our senators have for making this choice?
If informed citizens understand which choices would provide the most desirable result for the majority of citizens why isn't that one of the available choices for our senators to consider?
How long do we have to tolerate Senators lying to or agreeing with their ill-informed constituents in minority population states who seemingly haven't a clue what is in their best interests and who are holding the entire nation captive to harmful nationalistsic notions of freedom?
How long do we have to tolerate having corporate interests operating as major contributors to legislation where they have a major say in the formulation of that legislation which then generally supercedes the interests of the majority?
Is it ever logical or moral or ethical to observe the supposed rights of a minority constituency, corporations, when doing so results in real, measurable, and significant harm to the majority?
Can anbody think of a reason why we should trust in the honesty, ability, intelligence or integrity of our representaives in Washington? None occurs to me.

How long, indeed. It used to be there were two corporate parties, one anti-abortion, one pro-choice. Now that isn't even true, thanks to the nefarious and sold-out DLC. Blue Dogs; now there's an idea. Howard Dean: "If you don't use your majority, you lose your majority." The Dems aren't, and what would we get if they were??
And it's hard to imagine an "informed electorate" after the August Circus.
If most Americans get their "news" on the teevee through Infotainment stations, where is the possiblility of becoming informed?
Mary Kaptur on Moyers called for more Muckraking:
follow the revolving door between Washington and Congress, and follow the Corporate money trails to Congressional votes. Yes. But would the average person get the news? Would they understand it? Would they even vote for a constitutional amendment for public financing of elections? I don't know.

The really peculiar thing of this is most of it is so basic and so obvious. This begs the question are Americans really this dense? Just look at the huge influx of political campaign dollars and where those dollars are coming from during this healthcare 'reform debate'. Why aren't all Americans breaking down the doors of their reps offices? Don't people realize that by doing nothing they are completely screwed?

There are whole books trying to answer that question. I like some of the info on brain differences with PET scans.
I think one of the worst developments has been the tacit agreement between parties that it is not really cool to investigate each other.
How absolutely crappy is it that Nancy Pelosi lobbied for Rangel to keep his chairmanship of Ways and Means until the investigation is over? It really makes her and the Dems look terrible.
I love Charlie; but really.
Sorry to say it, dear, but yes, Americans appear to be just that dense. Tea Parties for Insurance Companies? Whoa. "...ten minutes with the average voter." --Churchill?

You are so right TPC and the QUID is right there for everyone to see.
Remember when we were all screaming for disclosure? Disclosure was always the answer like education.
BULLSHIT. It's quid pro quo. Right out in the open.

Oh Yeah! In your face BIG Time. The bar of corruption has been largely erased from the public consciousness. I'm sure it can be worse and probably will be. I'm confident it will drive me insane before too much longer.
