Nation Stuck in Reverse
This is one of the most surprising Supreme Court rulings I have seen in a long time. In spite of the certainty of environmental damage, the court ruled to allow dumping of mining waste into an Alaskan lake.

This reflects the conservative court we have and in particular the Chief Justice's long history of supporting and working for business interests.
I'd have never thought we would witness a return to a bygone era where we dump (knowingly or not) toxic materials into the environment.

I don't think it's surprising, but it is disappointing. As it implies toward the end of that article, hopefully President Barack Obama or Congress will repeal a Bush-era rule that environmentalists say weakened the Clean Water Act and allowed the Corps to issue the permit in the first place.

It's the regressiveness of this, taking us back a century or more that leaves me bewildered. It's as if we hadn't learned a thing in the intervening 100 years. I just don't know what to make of it.
This very selective acknowledgement of information has harmed us over the years in ways that can't be easily repaired. That we continue to be subjected to the same thing over and over and will suffer certain harm again and again gives me little hope for the future.
