Re:The Importance of Being Earnest - This has to be a joke

I read the piece Josh posted from John Hinderacker. Hinderacker makes what is without a doubt one of the most ridiculous assertions of all time. Easily in the top ten.

Hinderacker isn't even on the same planet as the rest of us. It just isn't possible to make this assertion except as a joke or as satire. The comments are SNL material for sure.

The way this mimics a view that is so apart from reality is the precise reason conservatives get so much wrong and so little right. Insights such as Hinderackers pretty much explain why things are such a mess.

I know, right? It's either a bad joke, or a bizarre point of view, (if you'll allow the understatement.)

Yeah, I thought the same thing. See Fred Polvere's Blog for details from Bush's first press conference.

My first thought was that there are whole books of "Bushisms" published. Hasn't Hinderacker seen them?

Also, I've never read Powerline before, but all the commenters certainly agree wiht Hinderacker.

Weird parallel universe, I guess.

I'm glad you posted that. Richard Grenell is a Bush appointee and an idiot (redundant, I realize). I have no idea why he gets to post at HuffPo. He is the one who wrote an article arguing that supporting Obama was tantamount to intolerance because it meant you didn't support McCain. WTF? He, of course, never wrote a follow up to that ridiculous piece. I love how he threw in the ridiculous MSM notion that Virginia and NC were toss-up states. Uhm,hello....

I read the piece by Richard Grenell that you recommended. The third to last paragraph begins with the very same kind of boneheaded statement that Hinderacker made.

He wrote:

"If this doesn't make sense to you then your emotions have carried you away from reality".

It is mystical that these guys supposedly gather facts and then make conclusions as if the facts they've just examined didn't exist. Maybe the parallel universe idea has some credence.

I read recently where it was suggested to administer an intelligence test to candidates running for public office. I'm beginning to think it may not be such a bad idea. Presenting a number of facts and then offering multiple choice answers of logical conclusions derived from those facts could well save us a lot of grief. The results would HAVE to be public though to inform voters. I also think a test to evaluate basic honesty is in order.
