We Want Joe

I am a JoeManiac.  I looooovve me some Biden. Always have.  Always will.  I was excited when then Senator Obama chose then Senator Biden as his running mate.  On top of the obvious political advantages of having someone with a blue collar background and ties to Pennsylvania, the pick really solidified my belief that Barack Obama cared about the nuances of public and foreign policy.

For all of Vice President-Elect Biden's shortcomings (which often make him more appealing to a guy like myself), he has very attractive credentials that Barack Obama should avail himself of.  The first is obvious: foreign policy.  Anyone trolling through tpm blogs at 10pm probably already know about Mr. Biden's credentials in this area so I don't see any need to dwell on them.  The second is that he would be a very useful liason to the senate where he has many powerful connections on both sides of the aisle.  Thirdly, his time in Washington should make him a go to guy on all matters political, from the intricate process of policy development and implementation, to agenda setting.

JoeManiacs like myself are feeling pretty concerned that Obama will not use Mr. Biden efficiently.  This concern is probably wholly without merit, as all of my intuition about the President-Elect tell me that he is a man that values smart people and their opinions.  However, I guess we were hoping that Mr. Biden would play a large role in the administration.  As it looks right now, the roles that he would be most suited for seem to be getting crowded out by larger personalities like Senator Clinton and Rep. Rahm Emmanuel.  So I guess the point of this posting is thus - how bout letting us know what Joe is going to do?

I understand he was involved at the governors' meeting. I expect he will be a stand-in, at a minimum. If he is present at Cabinet meetings, or NSC, it will mean he is in the loop.

Hope your right Tom!

I am a Joemaniac too. This guy is one of 10 or 20 Democrats who have kept my party alive for 35 years.
This guy might be the cleanest politician in America today. (Except the President-Elect, of course) He makes money through his salary, under U.S. Law. He has made some extra income writing his books and probably giving speeches. This guy avoids even the APPEARANCE of impropriety.

What a story. They just played some unpublished Nixon tapes, where Nixon calls Biden in the hospital where his two boys cling to life after Joe has just lost the love of his life.

Damned right I want my President-Elect to use Joe but I know he will. Joe's top aide has just been appointed assistant National Security Adviser. The Assistant's brother has also been appointed to an important position and so has Joe's Assistant's wife.

If the world blows up somewhere, I am telling you Barack is going to call Biden first.

Do not worry. But WEKNOW that if something happened to our beloved President, the right man is there to guide our nation. Joe Biden was the most experienced and heartful and beloved man who could have ever been president and I am so glad that he is there.

These idiots inthe so-called media love making fun of him but, he is not giving up his position as CEO of a felonious company that gave aid and assistance to the enemy under the law of the United States of America. Joe never made a dime out of any military action initiated by the United States of America. Joe would never reward big corporate interests to keep his office.

God I am glad I came across your post. Thank you.

I think Joe (whom I also admire and just plain LIKE more than I can say) has already said what he's going to be doing -- and I think he's doing it. Way back there was a short "60 Minutes" segment with the two of them and they said that in their long meeting, they discussed the option of Biden having his own 'portfolio' and Biden himsself said he did not want that. What Joe wanted was to 'be there', right next to the President, when and where the big decisions were being made.

I get the feeling that, increasingly, that's what he's doing and will be doing in the future. People who I consider to be accurate and pretty well-informed (Chuck Todd, Howard Fineman) have said unequivocally that Biden was all in favor of the Clinton selection and that if he hadn't been, she wouldn't have been offered the job. -- And if you notice the body language and actual language, lately, Obama is becoming increasingly comfortable/companionable with Biden and making more references to "Joe and I", and "what we want to do." (I'd suspect Obama isn't someone who trusts easily or instantly -- but everything I've known or heard about Biden is that he is someone people learn is very trustworthy.)

So the lack of a specific, high-profile job is at Biden's own request. And in the last few days, esp with the decision to have him present and speak at the Monday event, I get the feeling that Joe's primary job right now is making sure folks aren't putting one over on Obama and giving him the benefit of all his years of knowledge of specific people and types of people who are now gravitating to him (Obama) in droves right now. In other words, he's got Obama's back - that's his job. It doesn't let us see as much of Biden as I would like (which would be a LOT!!!), but I can't think of a more important, and valuable, role for him to fill right now.

Thanks for your post. Nice to know I have company.

I hope that he's got the huevos to tell Obama that he's getting himself and the country into a minefield with the idea that we've got to save Afghanistan from itself, that he says that forcefully at the very first cabinet meeting.

According to Juan Cole, Al Qaeda has been absent from there since 2002.

Re: Afghanistan ..... Biden has been saying for a long time that Pakistan is the biggest threat to us/source of worry, not in the sense that it is an enemey but that the instability in that country and its various connections to the other players in the area creates a sensitive and very combustable situation. (This was before the new government took over --- I'm going back to things that he said during the primaries, way back to the very beginning - CBS Couric series of questions and several TV appearances I caught. He may have modified his overall view, although it's probably too early to do so.) Haven't been reading Cole in a while (should start again) but if he's saying Al Quaeda isn't in Afghanistan, then where? Pakistan. Two separate questions as I can see it: 1) going after Al Quaeda where it is (which Obama has said he will do) abnd 2) as you say "saving Afghanistan from itself". The only comments I can recall Obama making are based on the assumption that bin Laden and the nucleus of AQ is in Afghanistan. If the facts indicate that's not the case, I would expect his plans to be reworked.

One could argue that we are obliged to help stabilize Afghanistan because we went in there and tossed up their existing government, but I've not heard him make that argument or express that view.

It's just such a relief to think that the people in charge of things will be asking questions, getting facts, and listening to informed opinion (which includes Biden's) before making decisions and taking irreversible steps!! Don't expect them to be right all the time ..... do expect them to *think* before acting.

I remember hearing Obama say that Joe would be his partner, his right hand, in on everything that happens...so not to worry.
Its nice to hear that people love Joe and trust him. You have some impatience going on, they are not in the office yet, don't jump to conclusions or disillusions until you see some real, not imagined, reason.

Great thread! And post of course. Better late to reading it than never.

Thanks! What I love about Joe Biden is his smile! A genuine smile in a politician is a rare commodity. It accords with all the kudos given him in this thread and raises Joe and all of you in my estimation.
