Multiple Sclerosis

For those of you, like me, whose lives have been impacted by this disease you will appreciate the stories from these 8 patients

Unfortunately, my family has recently been introduced to this disease.  How this person has coped with his diagnosis is nothing short of heroic.

The drug costs for multiple sclerosis treatment are skyrocketing.  So much so that many insurance companies are no longer able to cover them.

For those of you who know little about multiple sclerosis and are looking for a cause to crusade for, you should consider devoting some of your resources to multiple sclerosis research and awareness.  Multiple sclerosis affects women at roughly 3 times the rate of men.

If you feel so called, please visit the Multiple Sclerosis Society website.

Not a perfect solution, but there are always clinical trials going on testing MS medications. I've never had to pay for meds in 5 years since diagnosis. I won't be in any study that doesn't have standard medication (often they're just testing different doses), and I won't be in a trial that uses placebos (you might end up going without medication for 2 years!). But even so, I've never had any problem finding a trial. (I do live in a big city with a hospital with a research-conducting neurology department, but the first trial, I drove 4 hours to get to every 3 months... worth it to save $1800 a month!)

It's a really good option for those who are at the beginning of the disease, because it allows you to get medicated quickly and also to try out different meds to find which works better for you. Plus you get free MRIs and checkups. However, you don't get to choose which medication you get (usually this is randomized, for the sake of the study, but, as I said, I shop around till I get a study that has a choice between two standard drugs or two different doses of a standard drug). And you actually have to see the doctor more than most patients, and it's not about your health but the study. Still, if you're careful in choosing studies, this can be a good option. Some of the studies even pay a bit to help compensate for travel and parking.

And it's a bit of a help to medical science!

Hang in there-- MS is a weird disease. Sometimes patients are in a wheelchair in a few weeks, and others (like me) have minor symptoms and that's it for years. The best thing probably is to get medicated early to stave off the worst damage, and hope they come up with a cure in the next decade!

BTW, if you just google "clinical trials", there are websites that keep track of different trials getting started. Here's one that sends emails for possible matches: http://www.centerwatch.com/ctrc/MSFocus/
