Xenophobia: Ludacris and Out-Dated
Virgil Goode.
You probably have all heard his name thoughout today and will probably hear his name thoughout the rest of this week (and on other blogs)
It's become synonomis with the words Islamophobia and Xenophobia as of right now - and it's all thanks to his big mouth, and a little letter.
After reciving 'thousands' of letters about D-Minn Keith Ellison's request to use the Koran (Qu'ran) durring his inaguration into Congress, Virgina statesmen Virgil Goode answered these worried citizens.
And inserted his foot into his mouth.
In this letter - Goode addressed the immigration of Muslims into the United States and can be quoted as saying: "If American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Vigil Goode position on immigration... there will likely be many more Muslims electedto office and demanding the use of the Qu'ran.. I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States."
*Ding* Hear that? A fresh load of hypocrisy fresh out of yet another xenophobic/anti-islamic political bakery.
This man was absolutely halarious to listen to this morning on the news as he 'defended his stance' on what he said. Well, at least he's sticking by his word - as racist and ignorant as they were.
And what does Rep Ellison - the Nation's first Muslim-American electee to Congress have to say about all of this?
"They are our nurses, doctors, husbands, wives, kids, who just want to live and prosper in the American way," Ellison, D-Minn., said on CNN. "And that there's really nothing to fear. And that all of us are steadfastly opposed to the same people he's opposed to, which is terrorists, and so there's nothing for him to be afraid of."
:D You go Ellison.
Maybe Goode needs to be educated on something: Ellison requested to use the Qu'ran in his CEREMONIAL swearing in - emphasis on CEREMONIAL. Yeah, it's sort of tradition to swear on the Bible - but, you can swear on any dang book you want to - it's your choice. It's just something to go in the history books: Ellison, like all other elected officals - takes in a mass offical swearing in ceremony when the new Congress steps in.
(And, thanks to our handy-dandy Constitution that Mr. Goode seems to have misplaced, the First Amendment grants Rep Ellison this right: it prohibits Congress from establishing a religion or prohibiting the free xercise therof)
His choice just so happened to be a book that's a part of a religion that many American's fear (somewhat unjustly, I must add)
Why should it matter anyways what Mr. Ellison believes in? He's not using his religion to dictate as to what decisions he will make based on the good of the people - that's not what he signed up for when he entered Congress.
His faith doesn't define his citizenship and Goode needs to get that though his biggoted head.
Wasn't America founded to be a free country - in which you could believe what you want - without fear?
Goode has no right to say that Ellison's request is un-American - Ellison was born in Detroit and attened law school in Minnesota; he loves his country and enjoys the same freedoms and follows our laws.
If he's not an American - than please, somebody explain to me what American is?
Goode needs to go brush up on what the true traditions of America are - maybe he can take that hypocrite Prager with him as well (Oh yes, everybody's favourite hypocrite is also in on this as well...)

And inserted his foot into his mouth.
More like an entire shoe store.
Evidently, the recent unexpected unemployment of another member of Congress due to racist commentaries, did not penetrate Goode's tiny little brain.
But sooner or later he will have to swallow, and all those shoes coming out the other end...

It still floors me as to how people can still be xenophobic in our country as it is today....
Hehe - good one about the shoe store..

I don't think there is any substantial phobia, i.e. fear, of others.
At the same time, as diversity is destroying all unity and breaking down social structure, there will sensibly be those who speak out against this degeneration and warn us what will come if this process continues. That Muslims will gain some influence is only a minor side effect in this process, but was one person's realization.
The larger point is really a question of what we should make our society. If we place taboos on speaking our minds and require all people to say how great diversity and post-modern liberalism is, then all we'll get are a bunch of idiot P.C. babble, fantasy nonsense, and childish cliches -- which is basically the accepted level of discourse in media and public places today.

Good point - but, I do think that people do have a very large fear of Muslims.
I mean - if you ask some people (not all) but some, if they would fly on an airplane with a small group of Muslims or one - they will tell you they won't fly on the plane.
Why do they do this? Well, because they FEAR that those Muslim commuters could possibly end up killing them.
To some degree, this 'profling' is a good thing - one of those Muslims could very well next be a terrorist - but the Average American commuter is so overly dramatic that they exagerate the entire thing and make it into a production...only to make it worse, when that fellow they accused - isn't.
Our politicans and fellow countrymen aren't doing much to help ease this - spreading hate is not a way to get people to think that diversity is a good thing and to help ease us all back into society - maybe even change it to fit the new occupants of the mold.
Fear does not make it right to make such prejudical and derogivite statements - and people shouldn't just overlook Goode's words. Yeah - forgive, but don't forget.
It's wrong to punish a group of people for the work of some Extremist morons.
Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they can not communicate; they can not communicate because they are separated.

It seems that some people have forgotten that this country was initially colonized by people fleeing religious persecution and seeking religious freedom. With a few exceptions, the U.S. has been a safe haven for people seeking their own way and a better way of life. Our diversity has been our strength by insuring exposure to different ideas and beliefs.

Actually, many of those people fleeing religious persecution were seeking to impose their own religious persecution.
The Puritans were not exactly ecumenicists.
The reason that America is such a strongly-religious country is because that brand of intolerance was prohibited by the First Amendment.

Finaly - the Washington Post does something good (I haven't read it much in a while, I didn't like some of their articles - but this, I like)
Thanks for the article Glenn :D

Gotta disagree with you here. Mr. Goode certainly does have the right to say that. He also has the right to say that kerosene tastes better than asti spumonte.
This is America. You're allowed to be wrong all you want.

Just because you have a right to say something like that doesn't mean you are, ah - 'right'.
It seems everyone is exploiting their stupidity lately - mainly our politicians.
