Weekly Immigration Wire: The White House vs. Reality

by Nezua, TMC Mediawire Blogger

The immigration discussion is sometimes reduced to symbols or a war of "sides," be it on blogs, comment threads, or conference calls between legislators, media outlets, and activists. But it's important to remember what this fight is about: People. In last week's Wire, we covered the White House's June 25th meeting with lawmakers, during which an intention to address immigration reform was formally announced. The meeting yielded much celebration and discussion by advocacy groups and activists alike, but waiting for reform does not change the situation on the ground. This week, we look at everyday situations--from students who are deported upon graduation to the growing number of hate crimes--that make a clear argument for reform now, not later.

RaceWire's Julianne Hing reports on the "good immigrant/bad immigrant" fallacy inherent in even the DREAM Act's terms:

When the DREAM Act is passed, heck, when immigration reform gets passed, people in this country will feel so magnanimous. But families will still get torn apart because we insist on dividing immigrants into two camps: the good and deserving, and the bad and unworthy.

Hing writes this in reference to the case of Walter Lara, a child of immigrants, who wasn't aware of his undocumented status until attending college. He was nearly deported this July, but managed to stay thanks to a "a frenzied couple months of multi-pronged organizing" and petitioning the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Hing calls Lara's halted deportation a "pyrrhic victory" for the movement.

The phrase "comprehensive reform" is used by media, activists. and politicians alike, but what does it actually mean? Will comprehensive reform include aid to those fleeing military corruption in Mexico? Or will our immigration policies keep them at bay with a wall or more border troops? In Mother Jones, Richard Bowden writes of reporter Emilio Gutiérrez Soto's flight from the Mexican Army and appeal for asylum in the U.S., even though "no Mexican reporter has ever been given political asylum." The U.S. supports Mexican President Felipe Calderón's harsh Drug War policies, and yet our policies have forced this migrant and many others North, where they often end up in detention. With truly "comprehensive" reform, we could resolve this glaring hypocrisy.

In the video below, Gutiérrez Soto speaks about his belief in the U.S. justice system, and his hopes for the future.

Writing for RaceWire, Michelle Chen reports on Utah's newly introduced law that requires home childcare providers to show proof of immigration status in addition to normally-required background and safety checks. There is no argument that childcare standards are necessary. But laws like this don't take the realities on the ground into account. "Utah's crackdown on undocumented immigrants threatens to throw off a critical balance between quality and accessibility," writes Chen. The move will cause many to lose their jobs, "while pushing families to seek out less-regulated care."

In the absence of a definitive immigration policy, restrictionists use convoluted rhetoric to muddy facts. Walter Ewing, posting at Alternet, warns of the "Green Xenophobia" employed by hate groups like the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Ewing handily debunks one of FAIR's "special reports" that ties greenhouse gases to immigrants. Simply put, the greenhouse gases emitted by the U.S. are "a function not of population size, but of the degree to which we as a society rely upon fossil fuels, power plants, industrial processes, and automobiles." Ewing also reminds us that John Tanton, an "uber nativist" is responsible for creating FAIR, and several other anti-immigrant groups (like NumbersUSA, and CIS.)

Finally, reporting for the Progressive, Yolanda Chávez Leyva writes a stirring appeal to our better natures as individuals, and collectively as a nation in "Recent Attacks on Immigrants Tell Us Who We Are." She asks, "What kind of nation are we that allows our youth to stalk and kill others for being 'different'?" and then draws a line. "It's time that we take the anti-immigrant rhetoric and its fear-mongering leaders for what they are -- not protectors of this nation but destroyers." It's hard to argue with that.

Now that E-verify has not been sacrificed for the business community, it should be implemented across these United States. Right now rogue states like California a self branded--SANCTUARY STATE--should be forced by federal mandate on every government employee to be vetted by E-Verify. This is including every industry, business no matter who is on their payroll. There is no doubt in my mind that both the Federal, state and municipal governments have thousands of illegal workers, who are hiding out in plain site? A huge purge across the board will open jobs for documented legal residents and citizens and start the extraction process of foreign national by self-deportation. Remember that California business and contractors have had the luxury of hiring cheap labor, without any restrictions for decades.

However the tide is turning finally within Washington and hopefully the insistence of --THE PEOPLE-- drumming in their ears. The politicians have probably been stupefied by the barrage of irate voters calling for a permanent E-Verify adjoined to the Save Act. Under close scrutiny the people have demanded a double layer fence as originally designed by Rep. Duncan Hunter and upgrading E-verification, to enhance the search for illegal labor. The majority of liberal news desks, foundations, open border and free traders who don't want their supply of cheap labor severed, have given no indication that errors in immigration status can be resolved in the Social Security local office. California should certainly be a goal of ICE enforcement, specifically Los Angeles County and counterpart San Francisco, whose Mayors, Judges and elected officers have taken it upon themselves to shield illegal immigrants.

They have allowed easy access to Medi-Cal and a whole host of benefits, that was to support the bone fide population. No wonder the Great state is sinking under a $24. billion red ink deficit? State government used their devious influence to table Proposition 187, before being filed with the higher courts. We must not let down our guard, because once upon a time when there was no communications through the Internet, our politicians could easily stamp on our rights. There was no instant alarm bell of what legislation was secretly being discussed in Washington. Now we know what our elected officials are conniving behind our backs. That's why the American public has stayed ignorant and not so happy over the years. We only found out about laws afterwards, when it was too late to fight enactment.

We are already aware of a BLANKET AMNESTY being authored by Sen. Chuck Schumer, which will place upon the American people even more hardship in higher taxes to support illegal immigrants who have settled here. That is not even that is the main catastrophe? Although we are told that stricter immigration enforcement will be orchestrated , it will not stop the tens of millions who will swarm into America in the months to come? It will be like a human locust storm crossing our borders, in the hope of another AMNESTY? It is what the Council of Foreign Relations want? Unchecked, unfettered cheap labor as in their North American Union agenda. GOOGLE--the (CFR) and find their intentions?

The results of a BLANKET AMNESTY will not just be the irreparable costs attributed to feeding millions of more people, government benefits. But it will submerge us in un-reversible momentum towards OVERPOPULATION. From 305 million population--NOW--but an extra 135 million in 40 years. A (CFR) Council of foreign relations document calls for creating a "North American preference" so that employers can recruit low-paid workers from anywhere in North America. No longer will illegal aliens have to be smuggled across the border; employers can openly recruit foreigners willing to work for a fraction of U.S. wages. So it's no wonder CFR is pushing for the Obama administration to almost immediately enact Immigration Reform. To understand what the CFR is up to the reader to--GOOGLE IT-- and you will uncover the the devious Bush agreement with Mexican President Vicente Fox, and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin on March 23, 2005. The three adopted the "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America" and assigned "working groups" to fill in the details. It is an ominous agenda to remove any restrictions on moving foreign labor between the 3 nations. Obviously is the start to rescind any laws relating to immigration enforcement, including a path to citizenship for the 13 to 20 plus million illegal workers and families already here--better known as BLANKET AMNESTY. Then millions more will try to settle in our country?

We are continuously lied to about the numbers and costs for these unfortunates, that is a massive strain on Americans economy and the taxpayer who foots the bill. You can believe what our government states or you can surf the net, or search out The Heritage Foundation that has calculated the AMNESTY will cost $2.5 TRILLION dollars out of your pocket. My feelings are that the unceasing bombardment of public anger on our--PUBLIC SERVANTS--elected politicians, has caused them to re-think E-Verify. But obviously the Libertarian open border, free traders that is headed by US Chamber of Commerce has used their money and influence, so the comics in Washington dropped the NO-MATCH LETTER. In other words Every year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) informs thousands of employers via a "no-match" letter that certain employees’ names and corresponding Social Security numbers provided on Forms W-2 do not match SSA’s records. Which obviously uncovers illegal labor in the workplace.

For many decades we have been subjected to higher taxes to educate the children of foreigners, approve free health care, wick, food stamps, low income housing and many more handouts, that are undisclosed. The left wing extremists, business elitists have used the courts, trying to undermine E-Verify. These entities however, intentionally failed to convey that by immediately going to the Social Security office, the discrepancies can be quickly corrected. Whereas illegal workers are not going to step foot into this federal building. Since the beginning of the Democratic reign of the leadership in Washington, have almost killed E-Verify, part of the Save Act, weakened the local police detainment (287(g) law, the Real ID Act. KEEP UP THE RIGOROUS BOMBARDMENT ON WASHINGTON SENATORS AND CONGRESSMAN 202-224-3121. Cannot emphasize the consequences for cheap labor, which will lead to irreversible--OVERPOPULATION.
