One idea I've thought about is for each state to treat a U.S. Senator special election like a big presidential appointment - in other words, the governor appoints someone to fill the post, and then that person is ratified by the State Senate.

That would save the cost of a special election and would theoretically help tamp down abuse of power and corruption. Of course, a corrupt governor could always appoint a corrupt senator, and then a corrupt legislature could confirm him. But the only way to avoid all those people being corrupt is for us to not vote corrupt people into office... which doesn't seem like it's going to go away anytime soon.

I don't think it's a given that, if Pat Quinn becomes governor, he'd auction the seat off the same way Blago did...

In fact, considering the amount of attention that would be paid to such a move, I consider it HIGHLY unlikely.

And Illinois is gonna have to get a new governor at some point anyway. So you gotta take your chances.

And $50 mil IS a lot.

jsfox I think you're probably right about what Bill's role will actually end up being, but the idea of him in the Senate still intrigues me. It might actually be a perfect way for him to restore the bit of his legacy that he's lost over the last year (although if he's working for Obama as an envoy, that would be another way to get his groove back).

Even if he makes it to the Senate, I don't think he'd be the new Ted Kennedy. For one thing, there is only one Ted Kennedy, and he's still there for the time being, and God willing will be there for a while. But Bill could still be an elder stateman/wise man without having a committee chairmanship or much seniority.

I know exactly what you mean. Around Thursday or Friday of last week, I started to go into shock and, like you, started to get very upset. Don't know why. It's been a roller coaster of emotions over the last week - mostly good, though.

I've now reached a point where I am just thrilled to be moving forward with my beloved country at this critical moment in history.
