I'm Reclaiming Every Word in the Dictionary from Rush Limbaugh
Cross-posted at Daily Kos
Regular readers of The Atlantic know that Andrew Sullivan has been leading an understandable (if mostly unsuccessful) crusade to redefine the word "conservative" to what it means to him. Despite his unyielding support of equal marriage rights and his relentless criticism of the (ex-)Bush Administration's torture policies, Sullivan still considers himself to be a conservative thinker, a notion on which he expounded for his book The Conservative Soul.
At first I disagreed with Sullivan's mission. I'm liberal. Why would I ever want the term "conservative" to apply to me? But then, so-called "conservative" pundit Rush Limbaugh said this about our new President:
I hope he fails.
The Limbaughs and Coulters of the world would have you believe that their fire-brand version of "conservatism" makes them more American and patriotic than thou. Limbaugh's statement just further confirms what most of us already knew: That there isn't, nor was there ever, anything remotely "patriotic" about him in the first place.
Yes, I know that the First Amendment allows idiots like Rush Limbaugh to speak freely and speak idiotically. And yes, I'm aware that by spending any time calling attention to Limbaugh's dumbass statement, I'm merely giving him the platform for us to be outraged and hence give him the attention he craves. But nowhere does that First Amendment guarantee that real patriotic Americans have to let Rush Limbaugh bastardize the English language with his free speech. And I believe it is our civic duty to reclaim all the words that have been polluted by the right wing.
So you know what? I'm with Sullivan. I'm taking the word "conservative" back. I'm also taking "patriotism" back. In fact, I'm taking every word in the English language back so that the right wing can't destroy them anymore.
Here are just some words that heretofore have a new definition and are therefore no longer allowed for use by Rush Limbaugh or his right-wing cronies:
Conservative. This term now describes anybody who wishes to conserve our natural environment and keep our Earth safe from the threat of global warming. You know, because being conservative means being interested in "conservation." Since Limbaugh denies that global warming is real or even man-made, he may no longer call himself conservative.
Rush Limbaugh's views on global warming.
Patriotism. This includes the adjective "patriotic", the noun form of "patriot", and for sports fans in Massachusetts, the "New England Patriots." Limbaugh cannot call himself "patriotic" because he has now gone on record stating that he wants the country and its President to fail. In fact, no member of the right-wing fringe may use these words anymore if they supported "enhanced interrogation techniques," which, last I checked, were in gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and the United States Constitution.
Speaking of which, they may not use the term "enhanced interrogation techniques" either unless they clarify it for what it really is: Torture.
American. See "patriotism."
Life. Limbaugh uses this term to describe himself as "pro-life," which he means as steadfastly opposed to women's reproductive rights. But you know something? I can be "pro-life" too, even if I support a woman's right to choose. I'm "pro-life" because I support people leading full, healthy lives after they're born, like by advocating for health coverage for all Americans. I'm "pro-life" because I want to keep our soldiers and Iraqi civilians from dying in an unjust war. I'm "pro-life" because whenever I play "The Legend of Zelda," I do everything I damn well can to keep Link's life meter above 10 hearts!
Limbaugh has demonized SCHIP recipients before as "freepers" who just want government welfare, and he has called service members who support the withdrawal from Iraq "phony soldiers." So forget it Rush, you're not pro-life.
(NOTE: No word on whether or not Limbaugh supports the death of Link in the fight against Ganondorf)
Republican. Oh yeah, I'm redefining that word too. "Republic" is defined by Merriam-Webster as "a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president." Therefore, I'm defining the sister term of "Republican" as "one who supports a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president." Limbaugh vociferously supported an administration that suspended habeas corpus, something that's guaranteed in our Constitution by our non-monarchical, elected government officials. And during the Presidential campaign, Limbaugh also gave Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin a platform to denounce ACORN, an organization dedicated in part to ensuring that people from low-income communities can register to vote, something which, again, is Constitutionally sacred.
So guess what, Rush? You supported people who went against the rules of the Constitution and thus the Republic, so you're not a Republican, as per my definition.
Wait, does my definition thus make all of us TPM readers "Republicans"?
Uh, let's table that one for now. Just know that you can't use it until further notice, Rush.
Terrorist. Now, why would I want to redefine this word, you might ask? Well, I don't. I just want to keep Rush from using it, especially after he once claimed that violence in Iraq proved that terrorists vote for Democrats, when Bill O'Reilly said that America shouldn't do anything for San Francisco if Al-Qaeda attacked it, and when just about every other nutjob on FOX News took Sarah Palin's bait and accused President Obama of "palling around with terrorists."
The right-wing's careless use of the word "terrorist" over the last eight years has been pretty astonishing. You wouldn't let somebody brandish a weapon like a gun haphazardly and carelessly, would you? Neither would I. Using a word like "terrorist" just to describe anyone who's liberal is like waving a gun around and shooting anything that has legs. I'm taking the word "terrorist" back so that it can be used in more responsible, adult hands.
And speaking of guns and legs, I'm also taking back the word "terror" so I can have the movie "Planet Terror" and its gun-legged glory all to myself.
Feminazi. A portmanteau of Feminist and Nazi, Rush uses this word to describe "extremist Feminists." Never mind the offensive, sexist implications of the word. I'm taking it back for one reason and one reason only: The Soup Nazi's female assistant on "Seinfeld".
"No soup for you!"
Dittohead. This technically isn't a word, according to Merriam-Webster, but I'm taking it back anyway. "Dittohead" now refers to one of two things: 1) a person who's a huge fan of Buster Keaton's 1937 short comedy flick "Ditto" or 2) a person who's a fan of the Pokémon species called Ditto, shown below.
Consequently, the "dittoheads" of Rush Limbaugh's radio universe now have a new term: Asshats.
Asshat. Scratch that, I'm taking that word back too. It's my term for them and I'm gonna use it.
*************************************
You know, I'm having a lot of trouble finding words that Limbaugh is allowed to have all for himself. I think I could only allow himself a few proper names, which aren't even in the dictionary. And which proper names?
George Bush? Perhaps when taken as a whole, but when broken into separate components, we need both of those words. Other Georges who are and have been pretty cool include Washington, Carlin, Clooney, Frederic Handel.....and bush (lower case b)? That's the thing that surrounds most male reproductive areas, and that's a good thing. So no, Rush, you can't have those words.
Sarah Palin? Maybe you can have that. I knew a Sarah in high school who broke my heart, so that sucks.....but Sarah Connor is one of my favorite action movie heroines, so that's cool. And Michael Palin is one my favorite British comedians. So forget it Rush, no "Sarah" or "Palin" for you! The words, anyway. You can have the person.
Dick Cheney? No, Rush, I'm not giving you the word "Dick". That's my word for you and for the male member.
Not many reasons I can think of to keep "Cheney", though.....wait! "Cheney" is also a substitute name for "Dick", which I've already claimed as mentioned above. So you can't have that either, Rush.
And you know something, Rush? I'm not even sure you could keep your own name! A lot of Canadian classic rock fans might object to your bastardization of the name "Rush". So for Canada's sake, I'm taking your first name back and replacing it, once again, with the name of "Asshat".
*************************************
Tell you what, Asshat, you can keep your last name of Limbaugh. I don't see a whole lot of reason to reclaim that one anyway. But you can't have any other words. You may on occasion be allowed to use conjunctions like "and", "but", and "or". But realize first that those are also my words (I've reclaimed them too) and you must first get my permission to use them.

By the way, does anybody have a suggestion for a better title? I was having trouble coming up with a good one.

SuperBowl, I kinda like the title. It grabs you. First of all, since it has slime-bowl's name in it, that grabs the reader. Then, the fact that you're taking a whole bunch of stuff away from him, that's the icing on the cake so to speak.
I love your blog! I'm in agreement - I once termed this kind of thing: The War on Error.
It's more than words. It's illogic too.

Pseudo came up with oxycontinmoronic or some such.
Rich Lumberer is a hog. He represents all that is bad about America. Actually hoping for a depression and for real pain and suffering for millions of people without homes or jobs just so he can see Obama fail.
But his anger comes from fear. Fear that w has destroyed this country and hurt so many people that the republicans will not govern again for decades to come.
When he is really angry, the left is doing something right.

Alas poor Rush, everyone beats up on him
Rush the Tragic Limbaugh
(apologies to Peter Yarrow)
Rush, the tragic Limbaugh lives by the sea
Polluting public airwaves on talk stations and TV
Little Joey Six Pack loves that rascal Rush
And listens to him every day til his brain turns into mush
The family disappointment he was an unloved boy
Until he found his talent to belittle and annoy
He found when he abandoned his own integrity
The robber barons loved him for his pure mendacity
Rush, the tragic Limbaugh lives by the sea
Polluting public airwaves on talk stations and TV
Rush, the tragic Limbaugh lives by the sea
Polluting public airwaves on talk stations and TV
He blamed the country's problems on labor and the poor
And fanned the fires of prejudice so the haves become have mores
He lives in lonely exile in his compound by the sea
Where oxycontin fuels his own neurotic fantasy
Joey Sixpack's children saw through the Limbaugh lies
And made Obama president much to their dad's surprise
America's rejecting all demagoguery,
Disdaining fear, embracing hope and possibility
Rush, the tragic Limbaugh lives by the sea
Polluting public airwaves on talk stations and TV
Rush, the tragic Limbaugh lives by the sea
All by himself with no one else in moral poverty

Thanks for understanding completely what I have been saying for months.
We need to reclaim the lexicon in an effort to defuse our lingering distrust and fear of our fellow citizens. I think Andrew Sullivan is much more representative of the trend in conservative thinking than the clowns going doing in flames on the air.
NC Steve had a blog that is a nice complement to this one in that he advocates changing the prevailing winds as a method of facilitating change. I think combining the two efforts would yield wonderful results.

I'm not so sure that Sullivan is the voice of reason among the conservative movement. Read any blog over at The Corner and you'll see what I mean. And for what it's worth, Forbes magazine considers him one of the 25 most influential liberal thinkers in the media.
That said, I enjoy reading his blog quite a lot, even if I don't always agree with the guy.

The word "Christian" needs to be reclaimed. It has been very hard for me to get that word back to what it meant for me when I was a young child.
The Repugs have claimed it and changed it to mean "selfish, fearsome, Constitution-hating, homophobic, holier-than-thou, woman-trashing, panty-sniffing, window-peeping, war-loving A_HOLE"
January 24, 2009 9:52 PM | Reply | Permalink
I don't think that's true if you speak to many evangelicals who are still republicans or may have been in the near past.
I agree that a small subset of Christians have given Christianity a bad name, but that has little to do with the republican party except in a very peripheral way. The neocons co-opted fundamentalist fervor for cynical and destructive ends, true, but Christians need to reclaim Christianity by demanding different things from their representatives in both parties.
I think moderate and democratic Christians have an opportunity to understand that the caricature of Christians on the right is just that and is subject to a new tone and message on spirituality from the left.
A great place to begin is Barack's support of Faith Based Initiatives. Community service in support of common beliefs can lower a lot of barriers.

Yes, reclaiming our language is important because we've allowed wonderful words such as "liberal" to be turned into pejoratives. This is something best accomplished en masse. Singling any one person for or against is pointless.
Rush Limbaugh is an ass. We can't reach him. We can't reach those who still listen to him. His listeners are the x% that still loves Bush. Our energies are better spent elsewhere.
Andrew Sullivan is a fool. How someone so smart can be such an idiot astounds me (see: Thomas Friedman). His batting average sucks. He'll hit a beautiful long single now and again but he'll rarely make it around third to score.
Sullivan is untrustworthy -- both intellectually dishonest and classically dishonest. He's repeatedly lied about his inability to become a US citizen because of his HIV status. It's just not true. Andy can afford to pay an immigration lawyer to push his case through. He'd rather play the martyr instead.
It's worked so well for him. Remember, Sullivan was originally largely irrelevant. Mainstream conservatives never accepted him. Andy was an oddity: The "gay" conservative pundit.
Sully's much ballyhooed "conversion" followed months upon months of enthusiastic drum beating for Bush and war. After his "come to Jesus" moment, Sullivan's embrace by "liberals" made him far more relevant & marketable. It's no coincidence he landed in the pages of Time.
Look. He's one man crush away from changing his stripes. If the right candidate came along Andrew Sullivan would flip sides so fast he'd throw his hairy back out.

Is this what passes for empathy and understanding on the left? Little wonder that partisan tone in Washington will most likely be the last lingering echo to fade from our dying culture war.
Why is the automatic assumption that someone who has finally woken up to their own ideology is lying and ready resume their wicked ways given half an opportunity? Why is someone who doesn't use his wealth to force an issue automatically a martyr? Would that assumption be so automatic if a wealthy democratic Brit took the same stance?
I am pretty sure Barack Obama doesn't believe the same thing given the tone he his taking with everyone who has decided to lay down their rhetorical weapons in favor of moving forward as one nation.

I think you are correct about Sullivan. First and foremost he is an opportunist and drifts with the changing tides. Where they may lead is of little concern to him. His principles are, shall we say, flexible.

Rush has one important audience, the people who pay his multi-million dollar salary, but like the rest of the die-hard Reich, they do not yet realize how much the world changed during this last campaign and election.
That should be our focus! How the world has moved on. America is no longer willing to accept their tired ideas, such as "government is the problem" and the Left is all about "tax and spend", after the Right ruined us with "borrow and spend" and war without end.
Rachel Maddow has a blurb on Air America now between other shows where she declares that the Right is not bankrupt and has no Leader. That is the truth and we can prevent anyone from rising to that position if we do not allow them to recalim these old ideas. They need to develop new ideas, and we can stay ahead of them.
This blog is excellent. It is time to reclaim the language and restore it to the meanings it had before this recent fiasco. Because this is not a SNAFU. It has not been normal America for two terms. Let's take it all back and move on!

This partisan bickering and transcendent fascism has been going on much longer than the last two presidential terms and under both parties in various fashion. We need to take a bit longer view if the solutions we come up with to fix this disaster are to lead to lasting change.
Further, the implosion of the neoconservative philosophy that has been dominating our political environment these last forty years won't mean a wholesale dominance of liberal ideology either. It does present an opportunity for the left to dramatically alter the terrain and to redefine the center, but conservatives aren't just going to go away.
The conservative mindset has been the other half of the American coin since the founding of the republic. It hasn't always been a destructive force in our politics. Just as democratic administrations haven't always been a shing beacon of light and hope. "Conservatives" won't go away with the creation of a more progressive America nor will the republican party, but they can be folded into the effort with the right tactics.
President Obama is seeking to master those new tactics, while I am afraid this comment is tinged with a belief in the old way of doing things that has long proven ineffective.
January 25, 2009 9:33 AM | Reply | Permalink
Actually I think Rush DOES realize how quickly he's fading into irrelevancy, which is why he's hoping against hope for Obama to fail. At least he's honest about it, because let's face it I'm sure there are a lot of established republican commentators hoping for the same thing but can't risk saying so as it risks whatever credibility they have left, not to mention their loud mouth jobs. It's precisely why the Rethug congress members will try every underhanded tactic in the book to obstruct, in order to stay relevant.
It looks like they've also placed all their hope in the extremist Bobby Jindal, who makes conservatives swoon with his reactionary policies. What a waste of an education at Brown.

Not sure I agree with such a cynical view of this country. Rush Limbaugh is an idiot and a dead-ender, true, but that doesn't mean every single conservative commentator is also hoping for the same thing.
Why would they wish America fails more than run-of-the-mill republicans? Barack's 68% approval rating is made up of conservatives and liberals. The whole republican party isn't rooting for our new president's failure.
January 25, 2009 9:39 AM | Reply | Permalink
Traditionally, both liberalism and conservatism in America were both two sides of a relatively conservative outlook on government and society. The two viewpoints had disagreements but weren't all that far apart in reality.
In the wake of the economic collapse that brought on the Great Depression, conservatism as previously known and understood became an anathema in American politics. Those who kept the conservative label fell into two camps. The traditional conservatives who favored big business and the banks (who comprimsed the majority of the Republican Party) and the rabid, right wing, reactionaries (who were totally disreputable).
The traditonal conservatives continued to exist with it's main pillars being the banks and industries mainly in the east that clung to old ways. The fundamental pillar of their viewpoint was essentially to do as little as possible. They believed in the idea of preserving or "conserving" that which exists. Their belief was that sooner or later the economy would come back, that panics had happened in the past and would happen again so let well enough alone and don't start messing things up even more. These notions were totally outdated, out of synch with the population and essentially cruel. The people rejected these ideas soundly by 1932 and didn't even consider them again until about 1966 when a racism mixed with a new strain of virulent right wing politics.
The extremists who were considered a joke and absurdly outside the bounds of propriety and eve reality remained a complete laughing stock with no hope of ever gaining power for about 20 years or so. Then Buckley started his right wing magazine and started putting a respectable intellectual patina on the rotten, extremist ideas of the right wing who began calling themselves "conservative" because by that time even conservatives didn't want to be labeled with the word because it was so unpopular. They proudly wore the label and the scorn they received made no difference to them because they were despised in most polite company anyway. Most people who held the views of a right winger like Buckley or their fellow travelers in the John Birch Society did not advertise their allegiance to this unpopular point of view.
Liberals, who continued their incremental march toward a more progressive, equal and fair society ignored the threat to their right believing that they had killed America's version of Lord Voldemort and there was no need to worry. Democrats and liberals clung to incrementalism so as not to get too far ahead of the nation on anything and they made these changes typically with a substantial dose of traditional Republican support. This support was a large reason for the Democrats letting down their guard. They believed it would continue. But with the advent of schism in the Democratic Party over race in the 60's the Democrats becamse vulnerable and were unable to protect their right flank from being breeched in 1966, 1968, 1970 and 1972.
The traditional conservative Republicans made an unholy alliance with the extremist right wingers and went head over heels for Nixon's racist southern startegy and it's broad appeals to racism outside the south using the issues of "crime" and "lawlessnes" to frighten middle class and ethnic blue collar whites and it worked very well because the intellectual and moral defenses of liberals did not have nearly the appeal to racists whites as did the emotional and powerful fear of black people and other minorities. The liberal viewpoint was tagged as unrealistic, idealistic and dangerous with increasing use of Madison Avenue advertising techniques on the part of Republicans led by Haldemann's team of ad men. Democrats were behind the curve and didn't realize that their old methods of appeal weren't as effective as the emtional appeals of the right. Combined with the adoption of war mongering over Viet Nam Nixon's amoral new Republican strategists then stole the banner of patriotism and made support for colonial war a test of whether one was a true 100% American. The right understood what the Democrats did not and that many of them still do not understand: all you have to do is make the sale on one day. The rest of the time it doesn't really matter of the electorate is on your side. It's nice, but not necessary. W and Rove proved that all round. Sure it has it's risks but that's the way things work.
The once reviled right wing extremists, who had reared their ugly heads in 1964 with Barry Goldwater as their standard bearer now represented the shock troops of the Republican Party and provided much of the energy for the Nixonian reaction of 1968-1974. By 1969, Nixon's rise made right wing extremists like Buckley and his ilk seem respectable for the first time in decades. People like Orin Hatch and Jesse Helms started coming out of the political woodwork and twisting the entire political process in Washington further and further toward their extreme, once discredited viewpoints.
The rest of the tale is all too familiar for most us. But the important point here is that as the out of touch liberal Democrats maintained their traditional, relatively conservative approach to governing, the right screamed louder and louder that this was radical leftism and socialism, etc... when it clearly was not and is not. Nonetheless, as we saw in spades since 2000, the big lie works and the overall population had it's view of the very incremental and slow changes of American liberals as dramatic and extreme. Foolishly, some of the more conserative Democrats, in fear for their own political hides, began to ape the Republican line instead of having the guts to fight the lies and distortions of the right. They aided and abetted the right wing extremists and gave comfort to them all through the 70's, 80's and 90's.
During all that, however, liberals remained pretty much in the same place and thus being concerned with preserving what works and is good in our society have become the only remaining conservatives on the American scene (when properly understood in the traditional sense). Having come full circle and with holding power for too long, the Repubican extremist wing, still calling itself conservative instead of protofascist which is far more accurate, has once again completely wrecked the economy and propose doing little more than aiding the rich in response to that calamity. Finally, the electorate, no longer able to ignore the extremism of the so-called conservative Republicans, rejected them in November in place of a maintstream Democrat. But this time the nation finds itself in a much more grave situation because the extremists have weakened our national defense, nearly destroyed the value of our once rock solid currency, left us fiscally weak and vulnerable due to irresponsible borrow and spend policies designed to cripple the federal government and all this while destroying our reputation abroad.
Any responsible and nuetral evaluation of the political landscape as we attempt to recover from the hangover of this extremist binge of the last 8 years will recognize that the Limbaughs, Hannity's, Coulter's, Savages, et al are not conservatives in the true sense at all but rather the most putrid, right wing wackos who are short-sighted, racist fear mongers at best. They and their ideas endanger the America we all love and they must be put down once and for all. Never again should liberals, in defense of the traditional and sacred beliefs and mores of our nation, allow these fringe elements to endanger us or our posterity. Nuetral observers will note in history that the conservative defenders of American ideas, ideals and values were and are the liberals and the left of center on the political spectrum because we fight not to prreserve the status quo. That isn't what traditional conservatives really believed in and they don't believe in that today. What they believe in is conserving the best of our nation, our practices, our mores, our values and our beliefs and institutions and slowlly adding on and strengthening those things for our benefit and the benefit of generations to come.
I just hope we are successful in rescuing the nation from the precipice the extemists wolves in sheeps clothing have led us to.

My own favorite pejorative for Limbaugh's minions is "Limmings."
