The Kost of Censorship (Or, A Chink in our Armor)
I hate censorship. I really really hate censorship.
I don't post at DKos, though I'm a member, because although I like Markos it looks like utter chaos over there. Being a totally and chronically misunderstood person myself, I'm very sensitive to the idea of a community being able to "rate" my contributions. I'll rate myself, thank you very much.
I like to stay out of these things entirely - anyone who finds flame wars interesting, I got tired of them before you probably even knew what a modem was. But I saw one exchange I thought was telling and instructive.
Someone wrote a very well-constructed post about using the word "nigger" and put the word in the title. The diary was one of the most recommended for today - it's still there. But someone from the site censored the word out of the title with this comment:
I think it is an embarrassment for this site that it was recommended.
Daily kos has always had a race prblems and this diary is the stunning proof.
Whaaaaaa....? Who asked you? The community votes it one of the most worthwhile diaries of the day, and someone overrules them and slaps them down?
(And before someone accuses me of being inconsistent, I draw a distinction between a community being able to punish someone and being able to recommend someone. That's my rationale and I'm sticking to it.)
Not the place for me. I'll hang around here.

A later post by the same honcho says (asterisks mine):
All you "enlightened folks" who are going to do the "Clobert on Kikes, Spics, Chinks, C***s, etc." series, do understand you can not put those words in your titles period.
Political ads. Revenues. Bill paying.
Think about it. If you can't think of anything other reason why you shoud not do it.
Think about it? You said a mouthful, buddy.
