Are we sure there was a single pay rally???

Did I miss something? Did anyone see anything on msm indicating there was a single pay rally yesterday? There's not even anything on the TPM front page is there? What is up with that?

***Edit:  If you have seen or heard any coverage at all, could you please provide link?

My understanding based on an email from Gumbun was that the turn out was pretty low and there was not a lot of power to their presentation. We know the rally happened because some of our friends were there. I am sure they will write something about their experiences but they are just getting back.

While I am very disappointed, I am not altogether surprised as Ripper discovered at some point that Healthcare Now was not expecting a high turn out and major supporters of single payer health care like Elliot Gould didn't even know the rally was happening. It was clearly not as well organized as I hoped for.

My sense is that we could have done a better job had we started our own rally.

Still I believe our faxes, emails, calls, and even the small number of people at the rally had an impact:)

I'm so bummed...I sat and watched yesterday as Chris Matthews asked why there were no demonstrations and was yelling at the t.v. "There are you idiot! How could you not know that???!"

I have heard literally not one word about it and I've been looking. I guess if it was poorly attended, maybe it's a good thing it got no coverage, huh? That could have been a faux news splash "SINGLE PAY RALLY GETS IGNORED...EVEN BY THOSE WHO CLAIM TO WANT IT SO BAD!"

You wanna do something? My Congresswoman A healthcare reform opponent, (her daughter is a healthcare insurance co. lobbyist) put up a straw poll asking Do you support the health care proposal that's in the House right now?

Go and vote and spread the word.

Yes, there was, although it got very little press mention. The ABC affiliate in Washington (Channel 7 there, but I don't remember the call letters) ran a one-minute piece focused on Obama's former physician disagreeing with his plan and voicing support for single payer.

I will write a fairly detailed piece tomorrow (Saturday) concerning the trip, the rally, our lobbying and the current state of the single payer "movement."

I just got back to St. Louis. Tired now. Check back tomorrow. Pics and perhaps video, too.

Hey, thanks for attending!

Thanks for going, Rip, and I'll be looking forward to your observations!

The same doctor was interviewed on CNN.

FWIW, the local Pacifica public radio station in DC, WPFW-fm, gave the rally substantial live coverage. They featured speeches from the stage, for example Bernie Sanders', along with interviews w/participants like Obama's former doctor and Dr. Sidney Wolff of Public Citizen. I was at the rally and so heard only a bit of it, but I was told it was on for a couple of hours.

Yes, it's local, and it's radio...but it's something.

I think this rally was a fine idea, but why in God's name was it scheduled for a weekday? Major organizing error!

Well, I got there at 2PM, and there weren't thousands of people there. Maybe there had been larger crowds earlier. Some people were sleeping and one woman seemed distressed from the heat. The people present didn't seem to need convincing about the need for better health care options. A girl with a clipboard was taking names for a petition. Some people wore their org's t-shirts or ballcaps.

There were other people in business attire walking in the vicinity, but none of them seemed to venture into the crowd, and I actually felt stared at when I did so. Someone was speaking, then another and two supporters simply held a banner as a backdrop. A tiny group of dissenters demonstrated nearby.

It all seemed very ad-hoc.

I was glad to meet Jason and Rip, and had some provocative discussions, and an Ollieburger, with them.

Thanks for the info, Donnie...again...lokks like the lack of coverage is a good thing.

It was all my pleasure! But, you're right, the turnout was dismal.

I will leave the report to Ripper, but it was about what I expected, which wasn't much. I actually feel kind of bad for them, even if I don't necessarily support their solution to our health care woes.

Single Payer advocates need to bring all the other health care reformers under the same banner in order the ensure what comes out of Congress meets We The People's needs, if not actually meeting their specific demands.

Piss-poor process leads to piss-poor execution.

I will download after much needed recuperation. Very tough trip and glad to see your post Rip!

I thought there were maybe somewhere between 501-999 people there. I did not see any news vehicles in the vicinity.

The meetings were the high-point of the trip. The rally was very disappointing. I explained to Synch that it seemed very "un-hip" to me. But it was really a Medicare anniversary rally aimed at the 65+ crowd.

More later...

user-pic

Thanks gumbun...we'll look forward to your report.

user-pic

Oh, come on! I thought it was so hip that I was surprised Will I Am didn't offer to do a song! Looking forward to the more later and I agree that the face-to-face advocacy was much more important than the rally was, even if tens of thousands had turned out to chant and sing.

Well you got us some news on this Stilli.

Thanks!!!

It Congress was considering a law to require every third child to be sold into slavery, I doubt that you could arouse the American people to stand up and do something. For some reason we seem to be sleepwalking through the political happenings in our country. Too addicted to watching and getting vicarious pleasure from the Iranian demonstrations I suppose.

But, unless we can wake everyone up, and get some pressure going against the Insurance Senators, we will be paying all of our income for health care in a few years.

Where is the damn "F" key when I need it. All I can say is Tuck it!

Hey now . . .

Doing something beats the hell out of nothing.

A big thanks to all who did attend and put their personal time and effort into it. Keep up the pressure on both the single-payer and the public option. It's a long long ways to the bottom of the 9th inning.

Here's a little news: During the House energy and commerce committee meeting, just before passing the bill clearing the way for a floor vote this fall, there was an amendment putforth on the single-payer issue:

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) had offered an amendment that would replace the committee's plan with a more comprehensive government health program known as a "single payer" plan -- an alternative modeled after systems like those in Canada and Britain that is strongly supported by liberal activists. Weiner withdrew the amendment after Democratic leaders promised that his measure would be brought before the full House for a vote.

And ... Last evening Bill Moyer's went over the Wendell Potter interview that was first aired the first week of July with some additional information.

There's a short blog piece with links and a surprise at my Cafe blog.

Bill Moyers Points to TPM Cafe Over Wendell Potter Interview

Take a read and see who he mentioned without calling out her name.

Again ... Thanks to all who took the time to attend the rally.

Thanks so much! I so want a vote on the house floor... even if just to see how much support there really is. I knew the vote was supposed to happen Friday but had no idea what the results were. Excellent news! Now you've encouraged me to do a lot more work during the recess:)

BTW, I am going to write to representative Weiner and thank him!
