Random Things I Love AT 57...
I am a scrapbooker (aka the family historian.) I try to keep track as best I can of the "Days Of Our Lives"...little things that would be lost to us if someone didn't write them down. I keep a list of the cute words the babies use (like "nee nee" for going to sleep) and family stories that might be lost, like "The Legend of the Lace" the story of how the lace from my wedding dress ended up in my daughter's wedding bouquet and the bridesmaid's bouquet's of her sister and sister-in-law.
Another thing I track is "Random Things." Each year on our birthdays we update our list of random things we love at (fill in the age) - one thing for each year - adding another thing for the current year, and making changes as needed to reflect our current loves. So in other words, at the age of 57, I list 57 things and several have changed from last year. My daughter will be 33 this year, so her list will have 33 things.
Well, today is my birthday, now that it is just the stroke of midnight, and so my list gets updated and added to. I'd like to share it with you...
There is no particular order (after all, it's called "random") so not in order in terms of amount of loveness...just what pops into our heads.
Praising God, be it going to church or listening to Christian music ~ being with my family ~ my shows (Brothers and Sisters, Cold Case, Gray's Anatomy, Medium, Law and Order - all of them - Criminal Minds, House, Without a Trace, Army Wives, 24, The Closer, Damages, Burn Notice, Private Practice ) ~ my husband's kisses ~ my TPM family and "saving the world" through blogging ~ scrapbooking ~ country decorating (especially with chickens!) ~ my morning coffee ~ being friends with my kids ~ my grandchildren, and everything about them! ~ snuggling ~ gardening ~ ice water ~ pumpkin pecan cheesecake ~ being tan ~ being a Gaga ~ the internet ~ wildlife (as in animals!) ~ my iphone (can't believe they aren't standard issue when we are born!) ~ nachos ~ my ratty red flannel nightgown on a cold night ~ toe rings ~ country Christmas ornaments ~ red shoes ~ litttle glass hearts ~ sleeping under a quilt in a cold room ~ going to Maui ~ Sudoku puzzles ~ flowers ~ picture frames ~ chick flicks ~ reading - (fave authors - Ridley Pearson, Greg Iles, John Sanford, John Grishom, Nora Roberts, Iris Johansen, Johnathon Kellerman) ~ kayaking ~ Beth Moore Bible studies ~ textures (chunky tiles, fabric, plants) ~ exploring the road less traveled ~ pedicures ~ moss (one of my stranger loves!) ~ memories of my favorite dog ~ losing weight (not the act of, but being thinner) ~ Longi's Belgian Endive Salad ~ Trader Joe's ~ pareos ~ being barefoot ~ monograms ~ cooking, cooking gadgets, dishes and silverware ~ avocado eggrolls ~ the UK ~ pistachios ~ plantation shutters ~ snorkeling ~ my backyard with all it's flowers, birds and decorations ~ Maui Blanc wine ~ my DVR (how does anyone live without one?) ~ staying up until the wee hours, then sleeping late ~ feeling useful and valued ~ being alive and healthy!

great post stilli boy it was hard to do but here is my list.
my womans kiss ,coconut cream pies ,TPM and chatroom,nascar,dallas cowboys, my granddaughter, my four stepsons, my three dogs(chip,rufus and pup), my job (sometimes), my truck,my TV shows (CSI,Law and Order, House),Steven King books,John Sandford Prey books, sitting at the lake in the evening, country music,Ice cold glass of ice tea, early morning coffee, walking in the woods early in the morning, working on my truck,spurr of the moment traveling,stopping at new places on the highway, sunny days,sleeping in on weekend, talking with mom and sis every other sunday, my computer, woodworking, mowing lawn, demo derbies, dancing, talking to friends playing playstation 3, fishing, facebook, writing, making other people feel good, sex, playing with my dogs, finishing a job, windtalkers (The movie), getting on PC and having a good connection, getting all the bills paid and having a little money left over, the stand mini series by steven king, swimming in the lake, and everybody here.

Good question: whom do we love and for what are we grateful?
For me? Family and friends; people of wit, those who love wordplay, those who are curious who never stop learning, plus outsider people -- teenagers, old people, decidedly eccentric, quirky people. Cats, dogs and horses; flora/fauna/ birds; oceans, lakes, rivers, pools; the blended salt-air scent of briny water, pluff mud and sweetgrass; sailing, swimming; the individual or blended scents of lemons, oranges, wisteria, lilies, cedar and cinammon; lazing about in light-filled rooms or in fresh air on porches, piazzas and docks; composition whether in photography/ art/architecture, books, essays, plays; making the rounds of galleries and museums; revisiting favorite places: villages -- Victoria-by-the-sea,PEI/ Chester, NS/ Northeast Harbor, ME, Easton, MD.; Rockville, SC; Fairhope, AL, Belvedere,CA; cities -- Boston, Washington, Charleston, Miami, San Francisco/ London, Paris, Rio; islands -- Assateague, Cumberland, Wadmalaw, Nevis....discovering new places, sharing all of the above with the people I love, talking about whatever, engaged in common purpose, hoping to make a difference.

The taste of my first latte every morning, the first light of day, the quiet of early morning, my blackberry coffee cake; the birds in the yard; anytime my cat successfully jumps into my lap without needing to use her claws (my legs permanently look like I have chicken pox (I mean that in a nice way Bwak)); intelligent writing on any subject; Nietzsche; Swift; Kazantzakis; Rilke; my dreams – I dream I have everything-do everything-am everything – just in case I come to have something, do something or be something; the day’s work; lasagna; good pizza; prime rib of beef; a good red wine; any single malt scotch; the garden.
The list goes on and on but mostly I like the companionships of my girl friend, my friends and my cat which always server to remind me that it is the singer not the song. In the end that is all anyone ever really “has.” (Republicans take note.)

Since, at my age, my list would take up too much space and my memory would fade before I was finished, I will just list the things that come to mind first. Here goes:

What a lovely tradition! I have one too many here, but my birthday's soon, so I'm just gonna go with it...
My crazy family - snuggling down with my husband at the end of the day (those few minutes before sleep) - my friends - my team (their big sweet hearts) - our extended team family - my house (the first real house I've ever lived in) - real wood fires (contained, of course) - waking up to birds - smelling lilacs through the window - the first day you can sit outside in a tank top without being too hot or too cold - our yard when it glitters with fireflies - a chilly room with a down comforter - laughing until my face and stomach hurt - watching my students have their lightbulb moment - watching them get what they've worked for, and sometimes realize they love what they got - my cats (I wish I could snuggle them again) - movies that make my chest ache - experimental recipes that turn out yummy - quiet time with my grandma - that look of pure pride and love that only my grandpa can give me - the welcome I feel with hubby's family - puzzles and problems that work out well - poetry performances that makes me forget where I am and paints a new world in my head - finding gifts I KNOW someone will love - surprise visits from cool people - being trusted with secrets - candlelight - fall and everything about it - my grandma's lake at any time of year - the first cup of coffee.

So here goes... some of the random things I love:
Hot baths with music in candlelight… dancing freely dancing to great music exactly the way my body wants to move…driving fast on open roads and singing to great songs…the way my 23 yr old daughter leans over for me to kiss her on the head when she is getting out of the car or leaving…singing to my favorite songs… teaching people to sing… performing in front of a fun audience with an excellent band…”not pizza”(pizza with no crust)….all kinds of movies…laughing…strangers smiling at me for no reason… smiling at strangers for no reason… being useful…having something to contribute… learning… when I trust and everything works out…painting random pieces of art that I just fall in love with and hanging em on the wall…. Intelligent men with penetrating eyes….the old, wornout adidas sweatshirt I’ve had since I was 20… my daughter’s smile…hope…change… life…music… love… trees… flowers…chocolate…and all the rest of the good stuff.

Laughter, smiling/laughing out loud for no apparent reason, Underdogs, Dogs, my memories of my dogs, Visiting a corner of the world for the first time, Thai food, Recognizing something of myself in others, art, music, conversations with friends and other interesting people, sitting still while the world whirlwinds through me, wearing flip flops, hanging out in bed all day, not having to set an alarm clock, water, living out of doors, warm weather, to name a few. Swimming out at The Logs at night in mid-Summer... Skating down the river under blue Winter skies, wind at my back, Westerberg croaking "Jesus rides beside me, He never buys any smokes"... SMOKIN' that defenceman before he even gets his head up... Newfie dogs... Wilson Pickett and Jackie Moore and the back-up singers hitting the chorus in "Precious Precious"... hot fudge sundaes from DQ... laughing when I drop Dada on someone's post... Lilacs... finding that new band that I KNOW I'll never forget, like finding a missing limb... Tom Wolfe (the real one)... joining the Ice Weasels in tearing the flesh off some unfortunate... Magnolia (the movie)... watching the nieces and nephews and my sweetheart and my sibs all gathered round, talking and laughing for hours, watching Galaxy Quest and Lebowski at Christmas... walking through the Dreamtime... the Damnwells... playing run-'n-gun with Des down some late night post... Ham and Swiss sammiches from Timmie's... calling Clearthinker "BUTTMUNCH" (and knowing he's snickering behind his official outrage)... 1001 things about my long lost (now found) Love... giant talking frogs... turning on that low outside fastball and getting every last fucking inch of it... Eliot... communing with the Prophets... coming up with some idea that is just SO fucking good it makes me shake my head... looking at that pillow just before I dive into it... going into some crap Supermarket and finding they'd done a poor job with the Muzak and I can still get into the song, so I start dancing through the produce... looking at my old classmates moving through the world and wondering at the sheer lack of predictability of it all... seeing that great big Sea of Green open up in Iran... getting that e-mail from my nephew, whose boss just won the Nova Scotia election, first socialist government ever in Eastern Canada, and knowing how proud his father, my brother, woulda been... my lover's hair in the sun... Derek & Clive... reaching up and finding I have any hair left at all... knowing that my sibs are still kicking ass, stubborn big-hearted fuckers... my brilliant nieces, funny and wild and tough, and who knew girls could be this good... Fred... being amazed that I've made it this far, and knowing that I've still got a chance to pull this damned rabbit out of that hat.... and my Dad, a big shout-out to the cloud-tops, YA DONE GREAT, OLD MAN!

Happy birthday Stilli. What a great idea. My favs: My family and friends, my best friend and soul mate Sleepin, our 3 English Bulldogs and cat, Sunday mornings with pots of coffee and newspapers, books, magazines, music, plays, Maui and Oahu, Hawaiian/tropical bedroom and bathroom, framed poster of Ulalena autographed by cast members after a backstage visit, Hibiscus flowers, collection of Hawaiian silver bangle bracelets, books on Hawaiian culture (ya can tell I am an Hawaii freak), sheets hung on clothesline to dry, baseball, walking along a beach, listening to the surf, palm trees, sea shells, hugs, romance, our many trips in the truck, a day on the lake fishing, sunrises and sunsets, the colors pink and white, Apple computer and iphone, the projects Sleepin and I worked on together over the years, NYC-exciting, learning new things, joining in on TPM, my health, working out, my addiction to Sudoku, and seeing another birthday. The list could go on as I am so grateful for so much in my life. I have been truly blessed.
A list of things that we/I use to do and have to do again:
Sunday mornings reading the papers in bed with coffee and toast and peanut butter; getting up to jog at 5 AM to watch the sunrise, sitting up talking all night and going to bed at sunrise, get back to the gym on a regular basis, get our bikes out and ride, listen to music we haven't played in a long time especially Bolero and go back to Hawaii.

Thanks, Joanie! I know what you mean about loving so much...there's so much more I could add to my list! We are Maui freaks, too...been going every year for the last 12 years. Really enjoyed your list! Sudoku! Don't you just love it? I've worked my way up to "tricky!"

Thanks for your reply. We have only been to Maui twice but we sure do love it. It is Paradise. I would love to meet Madam Pele per some of the books and articles I have read. Yes, I love Sudoku and have to do it daily or I get withdrawal. I have Sudoku books scattered throughout my house and in my handbags. I am working my way up and am getting some of the 5 star ones in the papers.
