Real America??? NOT!!!

I am writing from Michelle Bachmann's "Real America," and if this is "REAL America" count me out!

Normally I live in suberbia, but we have a 2nd home in the mountains, and that is where I am at the moment. We spent 25 years living here and raising our family.

I have no cable (because we turn it off unless we are going to be here for quite awhile,) and no internet access unless I drive around what there is of downtown and find a few-and-far-between hot spot, which I finally found. Even having found one, this area is set up for analog, not high-speed, and it is taking me forever to even change a page. I hit load, then I can go to the bathroom, do my business, pluck my eyebrows and by the time I get pack the page is loaded. I can see why people give up and quit trying.

I can't believe I used to live like this. If I am unable to check my e-mail or log onto TPM, I might as well dispense with my coffee, in which case I will have a terrible headache and be a very grouchy girl. I am like a smoker trying to give up the habit,  in search of that butt on the side of the road that was burned down to the nubbins, but may one or two hits left in it.

Yesterday I trekked down the road about 1/2 a mile from my house, trying to find a break in the ridgeline to get just enough of a signal to get into my iphone and check my e-mail. It was frustrating, but I was able to do it, and got just enough of a fix to regain my sanity for a bit. My daughter drove by and I got busted! She whipped out the camera and took a picture of me standing on the corner in my pajamas, 38 degrees outside, iphone in hand! We'll be laughing about that for years!

Anyway, now I have come to the conclusion that this is all a right wing plot to keep a large portion of America ignorant. If there is no access to the outside world, they can keep us stupid. We don't know what they are up to, they can run amuck with no one to keep an eye on them. I firmly believe that this is how they got me to stay a Republican for so long.

When President Obama says he wants to make it so that broadband is available to EVERYONE, I can see why the right is panicking. How will they keep us in line if we know what they are up to?

So, the bottom line is, there are good people in rural America. When rural America is gone, we will have lost something special. But this is NOT (all caps, extra large font) the only place where REAL Americans live. Real Americans are those people who care enough about their country to keep informed about what its leaders are doing, and unfortunately, as it stands now, it takes extra effort to do that if you live in a small, rural town.

My hat is off to all of you who endure the slow connection speeds to  keep up on world events.

P.S. Dick Update: I finally heard from him! His computer crashed and he just discovered he can get an hour of free internet access at his local library once a day. He is going to try and post today!!! Yay!

You are missed too, Still. Yez, we heard from Mr. Day. I am toying with the idea of a fundraiser to get geek squad out to him, but I'm thinking he's stuck in an area with no geek squad.

=(

It takes effort and intestinal fortitude to keep up with what is going on and trying to get around the spin. One thing that keeps me going is the knowledge that the powers-that-be work equally as hard to keep me and you overworked, poor, and apathetic. The 'ol bread and circuses routine.

Since I am, by nature, a crotchety ol cuss'd cheeckan, I will continue to pay more attention, keep the teevee silent and take advantage of the internets and good folks like you who help me to be "all I can be" as a citizen, a neighbor, a friend, and MOST of all, a cuss'd cheeckan.

Thanks. For everything.

Good for you, Chicken! We count on you to stay just the way you are!

I hadn't considered the poor and over-worked, but I agree those are probably other ways to keep us from paying attention...great point!

"Keep ya doped with religion, sex, and TV, and you think you're so clever and classless and free..."

(Johnny, we hardly knew ye...)

Unfortunately, broadband to the undereducated is likely to be rather like handing the car keys to a drunk after filling the gas tank. They'll just go for more of the same faster.

This is one where we're going to have to do it the hard way, one by one, one on one, changing minds on an individual basis.

Thankx, cheeken and Stilli.

One by one, one on one. Well said, Grouch.

Plus style points for leading with Working Class Hero.

Let me tell you a little story. I moved to this small town, and broke down after 16 years sans Cable TV, subscribed to a satellite service, (not much else to do here). The basic package came with Faux News. No MSNBC, Comedy Central, (Daily Show). If you want those, It's gonna cost you. And if you're poor, you're probably not gonna spend the extra $12/month. What tangled webs, (pun intended). Regarding dial-up ISP service, I can't go there. I'd rather reread 'No Exit', day after day. It's gotta be more uplifting.

Ain't that the truth? I can hardly wait to get back to civilization!

Where there is a will, Stilli will find a way!

user-pic

Thanks, Jade...I'm nothing if not tenacious!!!

user-pic

stilli they can only keep us from learning what going on if they can keep us from talking to each other. if everybody would talk like they use to america would become as strong as it use to be. thanks for a great post

OK, I can just see Stilli outside in her pajamas plucking her eyebrows waiting for a page load.

You are no longer a moderate, stilli. You are now a card carrying lefty Democrat needing a fix.

Time to put your tweezers next to your DNC card.

I seriously almost posted the picture...it is beyond funny!

Why didn't I think of that? Would have made the wait more tolerable!

My friend on the Rez doesn’t have internet, no cable, no land-phone, and only local TV that shows all right wing news. Since last year she can go online one day a week at the community center but it’s really kid-loud there so she just prints and leaves. She tries to keep up on the news and stay informed but it is rough out there. Mostly she reads books and writes. Thank goodness for gmail - it helps. And we also exchange handwritten letters. But news travels too slowly this way.

Sometimes she buys those instant cell phone minutes but then she has to drive down the road to one certain spot after the snow melts to get any reception. She says that an overcast day is best for a good connection. It’s about 20 miles to a decent supermarket but this year they are making a community garden. Anyway that’s a part of “Real America” for a Spokane Indian.

Except that I don't think it is a plot of any kind, let alone right-wing, to keep people in the hinterlands dumb but rather a business decision of only investing in infrastructure of that nature when a large client-base exists, I loved the imagery and frustration this blog portrays.

Fortunately, this one will actually be solved with wireless broadband that will take away the "last mile" problem of traditional broadband connections and running cables over or under land. The technology is in its infancy, but within a few years anything within cell phone range or satellite range will be able to get a broadband connection.

I think people in positions of power generally prefer a stupid constituency that sends them back to Congress no matter how poorly they perform and that such cynicism isn't necessarily a right or left issue.

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed the post, even if you don't agree w/ the premise...I'm not sure I REALLY do either, but I'm tellin' ya, if I had to rely on dial-up, I wouldn't be blogging, and therefore I wouldn't be as informed as I am. They may not be doing it on purpose, but it is certainly a delicious side benefit...

Thanks all for listening to me whine and snivel...I'll be back home tomorrow to my beloved broadband...
