DICK CALLED!!!!!!

For those of you who have been keeping up on the situation with dickday's computer, he finally called just a few minutes ago.

He will accept the computer with more gratitude than he is able to express. As it stands right now, it looks like the computer that Face was offering in his initial post (THANK YOU for getting the ball rolling, Face!) will not work, but Seashell has one that will and she has been rehabbing it today. She will ship it to him. "Thepeoplechoose" has a 19" monitor that will be shipped, as well.

Old Grouch will be going to help him set it up if he needs help. He already has broadband, so it sounds like purchasing that for him will not be necessary.

I don't know how much the shipping will run, but Barefooted will be handling the money end of things and will do a post if we need to take up a collection for that...If, for some reason, the used computer falls through, we will be asking for donations to come up with another one, but at least he has accepted the offer to get him up and running and we'll work out any details as it is necessary.

That is my best info at the moment...if anything I wrote is incorrect, please let me know.

Bottom line, DD should be back to us soon! He can hardly wait, and I know we can't either!!!

Thanks to all of you who contributed time, energy, ideas, and made offers to help financially or just gave moral support. We done good, guys! I'm proud of us all...

PLEASE REC SO EVERYONE CAN SEE WHERE WE STAND ON THIS!

Normally I don't rec my own stuff, but I want this to get up top, so I did this time!

Yippee!!! Dick is coming back!!!

user-pic

As far as my bleary eyes can tell, it's done:

http://tpmcafe.chipin.com/tpmcafe

You have to either have an existing PayPal account or create one to contribute. Credit cards only unless you include your bank account number in your account. It won't let me contribute to my own "event", so I think I'll just pay you, Seashell, for the cost of the mouse and keyboard. Please email me at barefooted08@yahoo.com with your address and I'll send out a check right away.

Let me know of any thoughts, concerns or suggestions, everyone. Thanks!

user-pic

PS - Sorry for jumping in up here, just wanted everyone to see it.

user-pic

I haven't been following this thread closely, so my question is: What amount of money are we trying to raise?

user-pic

Frankly, we don't know yet, but NOT a huge amount by any stretch. Just to cover the shipping of the PC, monitor (separately) and Grouch's gas and rental car for an over four hour round trip. I'm going to pitch in for the keyboard and mouse.

Good point - nobody needs to go nuts, okay? Nothing more than $5.00 for starters, and check the total often. Once it's around a couple of hundred let's wait and see what else is needed.

user-pic

I called my Congressman about this, because it was of national importance. He seemed focused on how many voters were involved with helping DD. When I said we had more then 40 people recommending the post, he did some quick math. He said, if we all put in $5, that shoud equate to around $450,000,000 and he figured he could get the money with an earmark. If not, he would gladly help us borrow a $2 billion dollars from Chindia!

user-pic

It's probably more like three to four hours each way. 200-some-odd miles from the Twin Cities.

user-pic

Wow, me, sorry for underestimating. You really are going above and beyond ... thank you seems so small.

user-pic

Barefooted, thanks for setting this up. I've just come back from ChipIn and it was very easy.

As I said in the other thread, DickDay was so welcoming to me when I first came here, nervous as a kindergartner on her first day. He's one of those unforgettable figures you chance to meet along life's way and are oh, so glad you did!

Can't wait to see him back on these pages.

user-pic

barefooted - this was my first time on paypal, so don't know if it worked. My account details say the transfers (uh, the silly pug did two...) were 'unclaimed', whatever that means. Thanks for setting it up. i'm happy to pitch in more, so do let us know how the totals are going, and what happened to the broadband subscription? (I'm up for it)

user-pic

DD already has broadband...He really had to swallow his pride to accept this gift, so I, for one, would prefer not to push more on him right now. Maybe later, if it becomes necessary?

user-pic

okay, I understand. Thanks again SI!

user-pic

Don't feel bad, I had to feel my way through to set it up! Turns out I needed to upgrade the PayPal account to "premiere" because of more than five folks using credit cards (I missed that little piece of info when setting up the account). So all payments are now accepted and the widget thingie is showing the amount raised so far. $275.00 (less 2.9% + $0.30 per credit card transaction) already! Might be time to slow down??

user-pic

Have yet to connect with peopleschoice. We may need to get a monitor as well.

user-pic

If that's the case, slowing down isn't the best idea just yet, huh? As previously discussed on Face's blog, we should be able to find one for around $200.00 plus shipping. Unless someone else has one to donate?

user-pic

I'm still hoping I'll hear from him...don't think he'd offered, then disappear...I'm thinking we wait until Monday, and if we don't hear from him by then, explore our options...what do you guys think?

DD's current monitor is functioning, so it shouldn't be a problem to wait. If Grouch goes to see him before the monitor arrives, he should be able to show him how to plug in the old one, and have DD be able to figure out the new one...

user-pic

Good idea, Still. No need to rush on the monitor just yet.

user-pic

You did sooooo good, stilli. Thanks. I should have the computer out of here and on it's way tomorrow. Frirday at the latest. (I'm also leaving town on Sat. and have a dentist appointment for me and a neuro appt. for mom on Thurs and Fri.)

So I will need his address. I don't know the exact weight of the computer, but its a small form, so not as much as most. I was hoping to 2 day ship . If people want, though, I can overnight. The peoplechoose will also need address to ship the monitor. And if I have help with money, would like to get him new mouse and keyboard to ship with computer. Inexpensive, but new. What think?? (Normally money not much of a problem, just this month!).

YEAH, TPM!!!! We all did it!

user-pic

Geez, I had forgotten to rec. Rec'd now.

user-pic

I will e-mail you the address...

Missy will be handling the money...she'll be getting back to me on how she wants to do that.

As soon as we know how much the total is, we'll know how much help we need...Ballpark on mouse and keyboard?

user-pic

Ballpark - depends on whats in stock in my experience. But say between $30-$50. Wireless if I can. They are so much nicer, even on desktop computers. If not, wired ok, too. Is that OK?.

user-pic

I say we get him 7 or 8 mice, with varying lengths of cord, so wherever he goes, he's tethered to the beast.

Well done all.

user-pic

All color coordinated with the keyboards, of course!

user-pic

Will we be getting different colors to match his pajamas?

user-pic

and

also

user-pic

Brownies?

user-pic

Yez, I haz to find out if he likes nutz

user-pic

I like nutz!

user-pic

Bake the brownies in a Pail! the HOly Pail!

user-pic

You guys are terrific. What a bunch! I left a comment at the other post, but I think everything is being moved over here now.

I hope someone does set up a PayPal account so that donations can be disbursed to those like Seashell who want to make purchases. If anybody sets one up for the TPM Helpers I would be happy to donate. It's easy to send money to an account once it's been established. All a donor needs is an email address that has been set up with PayPal.

The problem is letting donors know where to send it without causing problems. Perhaps a PayPal link on a blog or website?

user-pic

The problem is that Seashell and Thepeoplechoose will need to be reimbursed, and I think Barefooted will be handling that...She'll post as soon as she knows what we need and how she wants to do it...I'm sure she will see this. Thanks Ramona!

user-pic

Just for shipping and new mouse and keyboard. The rest is provided very willingly and freely!

user-pic

I'll post the tracking number so we can watch it crawl to the great but far away state of MN.

user-pic

Which still has only one Senator!

user-pic

So that's why DD's computer died! It couldn't stand to live in a one-Senator state any longer.

Glad to see everything's working out. Everybody here is really, really amazingly wonderful.

user-pic

Great to hear that DD is coming back :) Might I recommend a Chip In page? It's through Paypal, whoever pays for the expense can set it up and then people can contribute a little bit at a time.

http://www.chipin.com/

I've used it before and it works like a charm and you can stop collecting whenever the goal is met :)

I'd be happy to chip in!

user-pic

I was hoping you'd chime in, I couldn't remember the name of that. Some of us have used that for gifts and things.

It works quite well

=D

user-pic

No, thank YOU. And you, and you, and you. . .

This makes my heart glad.

user-pic

SI,
THANKS for all of this, I hope we are able to help other out like this in the future.
You have an email from me I would love to get 2D's phone number.

user-pic

HELP! I need to get in touch w/ thepeoplechoose to let him know where to send the monitor. Anyone know how to reach him???

My e-mail, once again: stillidealistic@ymail.com

user-pic

duh, never mind, he left his contact info on the other blog...

user-pic

I never heard of Chip-In before. That's great! Thanks for sharing the link.

user-pic

I've been researching (and posting) so much about outrages and torture, and how evil man can be to his fellow man...

And then stuff like this happens. Totally organic giving from the heart..

Words cannot express how much this post (and the previous post) expressing heartfelt concern have made me remember the inherent generosity and goodness in people.

It is also so amazing that such caring and goodwill can grow from a group that have never met (for the most part). Yet we are a community, as real as any.

You wouldn't think so from current events, but it is really a good time to be living through this particular time in history. You can tell your grandkids how you were present when a new form of community was born. Where electronic meets the human spirit.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do.
Hurry Back DD. :)

user-pic

Three wonderful things this week:

The outpouring of love for dd and each other.

A Robin is building a nest right outside my window.

A pair of ducks in the back yard this morning.

user-pic

I just wanted to say that you all are just amazing (don't forget to post the chipin page).

user-pic

I am so happy to see this; I have popped in a couple of times and missed most of what was going on here. My mother died and her funeral is tomorrow. She had been sick for a long time, and so it is not a shock, and also she was ready to go, but it was a very sudden decline and not expected.

Is there anything I can do to contribute here? I hope that DickDay realizes that we value his contributions and we are also a community. I have just spent the day meeting cousins I haven't seen in 30 years, and although I have many dear memories, I honestly have more in common with you guys than I have with many of my blood relatives. I have an old Mac (hardly ever used) that I would be happy to send to DD or anyone else in need.

Please let me know if I can help. I won't be online tomorrow (the funeral) but once I am ready, I would like to help out here.

user-pic

I'm sorry for your loss, Jan. Even when you know its coming it isn't easy...

Missy will be posting about the money end of things soon. I suspicion it isn't going to come to much since all the big stuff was donated and he already has broadband, but it is surely nice to know that when help is needed there are so many people anxious to do so...

user-pic

OH, Jan. My heart goes out to you and I'm so sorry for your loss, too.

But I know exactly what you mean by the contrast between blood relatives and the TPM community. Given a choice ... well, TPM soars above the blood so to speak.

Everyone is welcome to contribute, but at the rate of willingness so far, it's going to amount to about 10 cents apiece. :-) Get through the funeral tomorrow and when you get back here, there will be more information, community and politics.

user-pic

Wow, CV I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is never easy, even when it is expected. My Dad hung on quite a long time too, but when the time came, it seemed all too sudden and I realized I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was. It is one thing to "know" what is going to happen and another when it actually does. It sounds like you have it pretty much together though, so hang in there, it does get better. :)

user-pic

I have nothing to offer that hasn't been said here by others CVille. Just know that you're not alone.

user-pic

I'm sorry CV. Take care of your clan. We'll take care of Dick. Then come back when you can. q

user-pic

My heart hurts for you, I'm so sorry for your loss. I am blessed to still have my mother with me, and am thankful for that every day. Thank you for reminding me to tell her how much I love her for as long as I have the chance.

user-pic

So sorry for your loss, CV. Please know that your mother is with you.

user-pic

Lost my mom a bit over 10 years ago. I still want to pick up the phone and call her sometimes.

Be strong.

user-pic

Jan:
I've been thinking of you all week. I'm so sorry. Take care. Come back soon. In the meantime, if you want to talk-- about your mother, or anything else -- please call. (I think my number was included in emails; I'll check and, if not, I'll send it right away.) And thank you, Jan, again, for your help with information when I needed it.

user-pic

CV D
There is a song by Jimmy Buffett called "One Particular Harbor" find it and give it a listen. It helps me when I think of lost family and friends to the point that I have instructions that it be played at my "going away party".

There are really no words, so I wish you and yours Peace. And know that it will slowly become easier.

user-pic

My prayers are with you and yours.

user-pic

I am so sorry for your loss, Cville Dem.

user-pic

I'm home.

I would go help DD if he needs it. And I can take a look at his old HD and see about getting his files off and scanned too. I'll speak w/you privately, Still.

user-pic

I e-mailed you his phone # so you can connect up...Thanks grouch!

user-pic

I called a couple hours ago - rolled to voicemail, so I left a message.

user-pic

When you, whichever of us, go/goes to see DD please give him a hug for me. And dear All, accept a hug and a kiss from me. Then please post the place to send the $$$. In more or less that order, understand.

user-pic

Hello, everyone. If we're all agreed, I'll set up a PayPal "chip-in" account immediately and post the info in a blog. Just let me know if that's not OK, or if someone else wants to do it or already has ...

user-pic

I think we were waiting for you Missy. Thanks so much for doing that. :)

user-pic

Perfect, Missy...Thanks! Please link it here as well!

user-pic

A good deed done for a good person. Bravo to all!

user-pic

Don't know what to say except...
Amazing, thanks to everyone involved.

user-pic

The thanks goes to you, Face. A thousand times over again.

user-pic

Exactly. O¿O Face rocked and rolled on this one.

Are we the early birds (or the late chickens) in this crowd or what?

user-pic

Wow, this really made my week! Thanks so much to all for making it possible - especially seashell, SI, barefooted, peop and Face!! This is just wonderful!
:0)

user-pic

I contributed on behalf of MaggieM and myself but I don't see that it "took" yet. I also left a comment there but don't see that either. If barefooted can verify at some point, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

user-pic

It's all there now, Lis - I had to upgrade the Paypal account.

user-pic

Do you think we can get a set of speakers for the man, too? It would be nice if he could hear the vids and stuff.

user-pic

co-signed!

user-pic

Thats' true. DD can't hear anything that's linked to his system. I'd be in for that. though maybe there'll be something functional built-in?

user-pic

Seashell is already on that! Thanks for the suggestion!

user-pic

$25 on it's way barefoot. If there's any leftover I suggest Dick and the Old Grouch use it for a nice lunch and libations.

user-pic

Mmmmm....libations.... *drool*

*shakes out of reverie*

I have $20 en route (scheduled cash transfer to happen tomorrow straight from ye olde bank account).

Oh yeah....speaking of cash on its way, Mark....what's your campaign URL again?

user-pic

Well the election is over Boyd. It was April 7th. But you can still donate to the cause and help us defray costs here:

http://dgdemocrats.synthasite.com/2009twpbrochure.php

user-pic

Well, I've been buried in work, so I kind of missed, like, everything.

But DGTDems got their $20 from me too. :-) Keep up the good work.

user-pic

Thanks Boyd! We'll put it to good use.

user-pic

Where's the link to send money?

user-pic

Found it and contributed. Thanks for doing this. I missed dd. Want him to listen to my radio show.

user-pic

Hi everyone,

OK, it's done and in the box! Some really nice speakers are in there, too. I checked all three shippers and they are basically the same. DD will have it by 5 PM SATURDAY!!

On my way to the Dentist first and then picking up the mouse and keyboard. Will post the costs and tracking number when I get back.

This Cafe has some awesome people. More later!

user-pic

Everyone is awesome for sure. You all Rawk, especially Still, Seashell, TPC and the Grouchie one.

But. I have to say, this future reposting of blogs troubles me.

I don't like it. Even for Dickon.

=(

I don't think it's very kewl. The comments will keep the link alive. I dunno.

(shuffles feet)

I'm...troubled.

user-pic

I gotta admit... I share youz concern.

user-pic

I'll let Ramona be last.

=D

user-pic

I've been thinking it, too, but didn't think it was my place to say anything. I think it's time to let the link die. I'm good at killing threads, so maybe I could be the last?

user-pic

Sorry, guys...probably should have checked to see what y'all thought about it...just wanted to make sure everyone who wanted to contribute got the opportunity... Not everyone gets onto the site every 24 hours.

I apologize, and I won't do it again...

(hangs head in shame...)(and shuffles feet in a chicken like way...)

But thanks for mentioning your concern, I woulda hated it if you were thinking it but not saying it...

user-pic

I luvs Stillidealistic.

user-pic

...and stillidealistic loves Bwak...

user-pic

Perhaps, Still, whenever we (those so inclined) post a blog between now and May 23rd we simply include the chip-in page link? Others include a link to their own/shared website at the end of their blog - what's the difference?

user-pic

That's great idea, Missy...

Last time I checked we were up to $437.00...should be close, even if we need to buy a monitor.

user-pic

I fergot to saw you rawk, too.

You RAWK!!!!

user-pic

TO ALL
PLEASE take the time to enjoy the ... don't know the right word... How about... "GLOW" of helping a friend out.

You ALL deserve a tremendous pat on the back.
I sincerely hope we can keep things going with this "TPM Helpers Club" in some way. But BF is correct A step at a time.

To everyone THANK YOU FOR doing 2D right. IT MADE MY DAY, HELL, MAYBE EVEN MY YEAR.

To you 2D, pen to paper... "U.S." can hardly wait.
