I Swear, We'll Fight About Anything!

I just ran across an article in the Huff Post that has me shaking my head...I swear, we'll fight about ANYTHING!

"We do not have our first black president," the author Christopher Hitchens said on the BBC program "Newsnight." "He is not black. He is as black as he is white."

A Doonesbury comic strip that ran the day after the election showed several soldiers celebrating.

"He's half-white, you know," says a white soldier.

"You must be so proud," responds another.

Pride is the center of racial identity, and some white people seem insulted by a perception that Obama is rejecting his white mother (even though her family was a centerpiece of his campaign image-making) or baffled by the notion that someone would choose to be black instead of half-white.

"He can't be African-American. With race, white claims 50 percent of him and black 50 percent of him. Half a loaf is better than no loaf at all," Ron Wilson of Plantation, Fla., wrote in a letter to the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.

Attempts to whiten Obama leave a bitter taste for many African-Americans, who feel that at their moment of triumph, the rules are being changed to steal what once was deemed worthless _ blackness itself.

"For some people it's honestly confusion," said Favor, the Dartmouth professor. "For others it's a ploy to sort of reclaim the presidency for whiteness, as though Obama's blackness is somehow mitigated by being biracial."

At a time when our our country is falling apart around us, I can hardly believe people are fussing about whether our President is black or white. Let's face it. He's both. He identifies as Black. How could he not? White mother or not, he would have had a tough time trying to "pass."

Can't we just let him be black?  Why would any white person want to co-opt that? I guess in some bizarre way it made it easier for some white folks to vote for him because he has white blood (huh? When did blood become black or white? I thought it was red...) But come on...can't y'all just be glad for all of us that he's our President and let it go? One of the things that ran through my mind on election night, tears pouring down my face, was that now, black children would grow up knowing that in America, they can truly grow up to be ANYTHING they want, something my children have always known...Why would anyone want to take that away from them?

The arguments over Obama's blackness or whiteness have verified my belief that there are people out there with far too much free time.

And I've seen him in person, so I can tell you - he's something of a medium brown. (grin)

user-pic

That's for sure. I've seen him, too...close up, and a very nice shade of medium brown he is...grin back!

user-pic

I endorse his shade! Great handshake! Great eye contact!

He's not only black&white, he's national&international - with a right to Kenyan citizenship, due to his father's nationality.

What a beautiful thing it is!

user-pic

Actually, he lost his right to Kenyan citizenship on his 21st birthday.

It's worth noting that every country is different. For example, if his mother had been German, he would never had a claim to German citizenship, but if his father had been German, he'd retain his right to German citizenship, even after turning 21. (These rules are based on his age, and do not apply to infants born today.)

user-pic

Frankly, I don't care what color, ethnic background, gender, religion or political party our president belongs to. I just want him or her to deliver. Get the job done. And if that takes somehow forcing congress kicking and screaming to throw out all their screwed up biases and isolate them from all the lobbyists who have so corrupted Washington, so what. Our government needs desperately to take the reins and assert control that resolves to what is good for all of America.

user-pic

Obama sees himself as black. Thats good enough for me. It is silly what people choose to get outraged over.

user-pic

Before Obama "saw" himself as black, the country he was living in had determined that he was black. It was a catch 22 and always has been for Americans of mixed heritage especially when African is part of the mix. The sanest approach is the one taken by Tiger Wood: list all your blood lines and let others fret over what to call you.

Don't forget that Obama spent nine months in the womb of a white woman and was raised by white grandparents. No matter what you call him, he is as much a part of the white world as he is of the black world.

user-pic

It reminds me of the white beach crowd during the summer. Too pale? Shunned, stared at, pitied even. Too dark? Rumours of a tanning bed, or fear of the leather skin. By far the best, though, is the fake tanning stuff. White people actually streak themselves orange and call themselves dark.

I spend at least three months a year wondering what color people are trying to be.

user-pic

Good morning, little barefooted one! I thought you'd be asleep by now!

"A question I often get is 'You always talk about yourself as African American. Why don't you describe yourself as a mixed race'..etc. And what I always say is, "You know being African American, by definition, means you are a hybrid person because we have all these strains - Europe and African and Native American.' I would broaden that and say by definition if you are an American you are a hybrid person... ...But if I am outside your studio trying to hail a cab, they are not thinking "Hey there is a mixed race guy."

When I was in college I was rock climbing one weekend in the 'Gunks, near New Paltz, NY. I met a group from Stony Brook that Saturday and climbed with them. At the end of the day we were hanging out and I got into a conversation with one who was from South Africa. At one point he mentioned casually how he wasn't able to dine in certain restaurants in his home country. Incredulously, I asked why. He replied "Because I'm black". I'd spent the day with he and his companions and hadn't realized he was in fact biracial, yet his racial identity was indisputable in his home country or to anyone on alert to racial identity. Having told me that, I was able to see some physical attributes that bore out his declaration of racial identity. I think someone who maintains that BHO is 'half white' is obviously correct in the genetic sense, and in his case certainly on the mark as regards his family/home life. That assertion disregards the cultural reality of growing up with recognizably African-American features in our culture which is not at all unlike my climbing companion's experiences growing up in South Africa.

Blockquote html code:

<blockquote>quoted text here</blockquote>

Be careful that you do not copy and paste this as rich text. To be sure, copy and paste it into a text editor, and then copy that. If you end up with something weird that looks like this:
&gt;blockquote&lt;
you are doing it wrong.

let me know if you have problems.

user-pic

That code is what I used, but I was typing right into the dialog box in rich text. When I published the code showed just as pretty as could be, but no gray box around the quotes. What should I have done differently?

user-pic

When you're doing a blog, the software works differently. Just go back to your post and highlight all that you want to quote. Then look for the icon above with an arrow pointing to the right (= move text in as a quote). When you're typing in future, you move in and out using that feature (the arrow shows the direction you're moving the highlighted text).

Thus, it's different how you do a blockquote in a comment (using the html) versus when it's a blog - using rich text and highlighting whatever you want to quote, make bold, link etc.

Hope that helps!

I'm assuming you know how to go back and edit a blog. (blog now, then click "manage" and "entries" and then the blog you want to edit)

user-pic

In RichText mode:
Highlight the quoted text;
and then press the "Begin Blockquote" button
On my editor it's the ninth button from the left.
If you do this in while editing, and then paste-in you quoted text, you have to press the "End Block Quote" button.

Otherwise, switch format the "Convert Line Breaks", and use the html code. Don't forget to use the forward slash "/" in the ending blockquote statement.

One of the most personally frustrating features of CMS web editors is their tendency to strip away code statements that are not typed exactly right, instead of throwing an error message.

Do you use Windows? Do you understand how Rich Text works?

user-pic

I do use windows, I do not understand how rich text works. My m.o. is that I learn as little about this techno stuff as I can and still get the job done.

I learned how to do the blockquotes on the old system, but now I'm floundering through on this one.

Maybe one of you techno dudes (or dudettes) should do a tutorial post! I've learned linking, both in posts and comments, but many still don't know how, and I'd like to learn how to add pictures, as well!

user-pic

The thigh that's cool about richtext is that you can use a WYSWYG HTML editor, copy it in your browser, then paste it into the rich text editor, and the formatting stays the same...Sort Of. (this works only for your blog posts, not for comments)

The "Sort Of" can be a big drifting area, because depending on how the editor writes the HTML, this site's Cascading Style with come into play displaying it. There are many different ways WYSWYG HTML editors will write the same editing commands. I hope I'm not losing you you too far into the geekalese here.

It's best not to use word processors for this, even though most can save to HTML. this is because most Word Processors are extremely literal when parsing to HTML, and that often includes horrendous inline style. Your "friend" offers a good worst-case example of this.

It does not have to be a WYSWYG HTML editor, btw. Any HTML viewed as HTML, and not code will paste Rich Text (this assumes a Windows box and either IE or a relatively new version of Firefox, it didn't work in early FF, and it may not work on Macs or Linux, I don't know-Rich Text used to be only found in Windows)

If you use Firefox, you can get a cool blogging extension that isn't too painful to set-up: ScribeFire. When in use, it opens up in the bottom of your browser, and you can copy straight from it into your Blog post. Just ignore any account set-up BS and save files as notes. Doing it this way also assures that if anything goes wrong at TPM Cafe, you won't lose your post to the ether in the process.

Let me know, if this confuses you, and I'll try to explain better, or if you'd rather work with a real HTML editor, and I point you towards some good free programs (the 2 link max has been used up in this message).

Hi stillid,

I did a couple of "how tos" a while back when the new interface was brand spanking new that you might want to check out. Caveat: PseudoCy is the techno-genius though, so please default to his wisdom for any info that clashes.

user-pic

Thanks, Mage...I'm good w/ embedding, it's putting up pictures like David Seaton does that is escaping me...

user-pic

Seaton is an amateur, who simply uses a word processor or HTML editor and the Real Text pasting function. Check out this post of mine. The image is directly loaded off of the White House Servers, and I used inline style to absolutely position the captions. It is not a photo-chop. Highlight the words in the caption. You can copy/paste them. This is the reason I call the technique: "Stealing White House Bandwidth for LOLs, not evil". (whitehouse.gov, being a government server does not come with the normal copyright restrictions. generally, all product acquired from government servers is in the public domain unless expressly stated otherwise)

I am amazed that TPM Cafe allows the use of inline style statements, but have not gotten anywhere near as radical in my posting as I could.

Also, the html format for images is:

<img src="http://{addressOfImage}" />

Pay attention to the space between the last quotation mark and the forward slash.

user-pic

I bow before you, oh techno genius! Loved the pic and can hardly wait to try the code!

I'm going to have a hard time ever k-i-l-l-i-n-g an ant again!

Many thanks...especially for the address...I may need it when I'm pulling my hair out!

user-pic

If you copy/paste the code into an html editor, it will not display exactly the same, because TPM Cafe has inherited styling that I had to adjust for, but it will display close to the same. As I recall, there was extra padding somewhere, so the image will end up being positioned to the left of the division with the gray background, instead of being centered in it.

user-pic

There's one simple rule in life:never pay any attention to Christopher Hitchens.

Leave him alone to insult Mother Theresa and defend Bush to his heart content.

Otherwise he may be up to something even dumber like denying that Obama is black.

user-pic

Flavius, when I read the post my first thought was Oh, jeeze, who ffing cares what Christopher Hitchens says. Happy to see someone else in the thread thought the same. He's one of those people that just wants drama and contraversy all the time - goes with being a drunk.
Remember when Obama wasn't black enough for the black community? The idea being they better stick with the Clintons who were "black" enough?

user-pic

It wasn't that Hitchens said it that prompted my disgust, it was that there was enough noise about it that the Huff Post felt the need to report it. Maybe it was just a slow news day...

user-pic

Half a loaf is better than none? Catch a half loaf by the toe? What the hell is that.

American history cannot be comprehended without a good understanding of slavery and the fact that when someone finds out without even looking at you that you are 1% black, you are black.

And Hitchens is out of his mind. I still get a kick out of him and now he has changed his tune and is a Bush basher but he will not admit Iraq was and is a debacle in US foreign policy. He is the guy in your boyhood gang who flashes his naked butt at passers by and embarrasses (ever parse that word?) all the rest of the guys but can be so funny nobody kicks him out of the group. Except he has a unique facility with words.

Good post Stilli. A deputy Defense Secretary under Rummy was on Hardball yesterday still arguing that Sadaam was a threat because someday he could develop weapon systems. Chris finally shut him down. All you can do is walk away sometimes.

user-pic

And I thought from the title this was gonna be another battle between dickday and stillidealistic! Or maybe something related to the bible guy! But no... it's much ado about much ado! But well done! And rec'd.

Now, can we get back to our regularly scheduled "fights about nothing?" HuffPo simply doesn't do humor like we do humor! They take too many people seriously! Now there's a topic.

user-pic

I figured that if we do nothing but goof around, we'll lose whatever small amount of credibility we have around here! Being in a good mood just seems to lend itself to goofy stuff, and even though the country is in such dire straights, I'm so happy about Obama taking office, the goofball in me keeps popping out...I guess that's a good thing?

user-pic

Yes, levity has broken out! But I do agree, we want a balance of humor and straight up news, values, and need for change!

user-pic

"Why would anyone want to take that away from them?" Many of them are xenophobes, the only way they're taking anything away from someone else is by trying to clutch it to themselves.

user-pic

The man himself said it best. There's no White America, no Black America, just the United States of America.

And Hitchens is a drunken ass.

user-pic

Hitchens is a very drunken ass.

user-pic
I Swear, We'll Fight About Anything!

Nuh-uh! Will not!

user-pic

Will so!

user-pic

Ok, you two keep "sawing" and we'll harness the energy!

user-pic

Unless I am mistaken, I think the standard formula invented by pre-civil war era Southern whites is 1/16 make you certifiably "black."

So if just one of your great-great grandparents was black, you ARE black.

Those pre-civil war southerners were certainly caught up in their class system.

Their 1/16 formula pretty much describes the depths of their cultural depravity and class paranoia.

Hitchens is just a remnant of that old cloth.

user-pic

This topic really pisses me off. Throughout the election the media was all about "will Obama's race hurt his chances?", now it's "is Obama really the first Black President?" I just want to yell "Fuck You!". If Obama stole someone's bag or was known for committing some unspeakable act, his ass would be Black, Black, Black! - even if they knew his mother was White. It's as if other groups/races/cultures are clamoring to claim a piece of Obama - only because of his astounding accomplishment. I'm sick of article after article trying to provide reasons and "proof" that Obama is not Black. In an attempt to dismiss the 1 drop rule, they embrace the 50% rule. Who's next? Alicia Keys, Halle Berry? And at what percentage are you no longer considered Black? Tina Turner has 35% white ancestry, Don Cheadle - 20% and Chris Rock - 19%. The majority of Blacks in this country have white ancestry and 1/3 of whites have Black ancestry. But the rules, even though scientifically wrong, have been set and accepted. No election is going to change that overnight, if ever.

user-pic

Who cares what color he is as long as he is not a Republican or in any way related to Bush! Though it is concerning that he is related to Cheney...

user-pic

Hey, whatever happened to the "one drop rule?" [snark snark snark]

Too black for some, not black enough for others. I swear he could tear himself in half and both halves could walk across water and someone would find something to bitch about.

PS - Hitch is a terribly self-important boor since booze destroyed his talent.

user-pic

Tena, I concede that under normal circumstances Obama can indeed walk across water.
I'll also concede that he has the immense strength, heroic will power, and imperviousness to pain that would allow him to tear himself in half.
But then each half would have only one leg, making walking on land -- let alone water -- difficult even for him.
So that's just crazy talk on your part.
However, he could no doubt hop across water.
Probably at astonishing speed.

user-pic
I'm planning for the worst, because while you may be from the Land of Lincoln, I don't believe you have what it takes.

Ain't that the truth!

user-pic

Well, that came as a surprise! That ISN'T what I thought I had copied...let's try again...

Too black for some, not black enough for others. I swear he could tear himself in half and both halves could walk across water and someone would find something to bitch about.

Ain't that the truth!

user-pic

How nice to have a president who is educated, intelligent, articulate, self-aware, informed, decisive, handsome, well organized with good managerial skills and a MAN.

Oh? Is he "black" ? ...I hadn't noticed.

user-pic

StillIdealistic, thanks for the post. Just to set the record straight bout Obama:

1. He is brilliant.
2. He doesn't have a petty bone in his body.
3. We are lucky he decided to run, and our country is lucky that the republicans didn't steal this one.
4. Christopher Hitchens was stupid about this, but he is right about a lot of other stuff, such as torture (I think Obama would say the same)
5. Can you just imagine if Barack Obama had run as a white guy?

Oh, and as a white woman almost 61 years old, I can say without doubt that it was NOT his 50% whiteness that made me vote for him; it was his 100% capability and uncountable good qualities that got my vote!

WHAT IF! WHAT IF! What if McCain/Palin, the clueless duo had won? At least we have some hope that a person with intellect and vision is coming to the helm of this sinking ship. Just imagine how we would all be feeling if we were looking at another repub disaster! Horrible!

user-pic

You know, I can't even go there with the what if...my mind just shuts down. It is inconceivable.

user-pic

I think this post deserves new life, because choosing Rick Warren to give the Inaugural Invocation just gives us more reason to agree that yes, we can argue about anything. And with gusto.

user-pic

1. I, personally don't have a problem w/ Rick Warren giving the invocation. As far as Christian leaders go, he's one of the less awful ones IMHO as a Christian who is having issues w/ her leadership.

2. It's his inauguration. He gets to chose. Were you hoping to chose for him?

user-pic

Submission recommended (would be highly recommended if possible).

I'd like to weigh in with a bit of personal perspective here. I was born in the decade after Obama. I am mixed (B/W) and was raised by my adoptive family (who are white).

Times were different then. When you were raised in those circumstances at that time, more often than not, your social experiences and society at large began to define you, before you had a chance to define yourself.

My parents never set out to define me as black, but that didn't stop others from defining me as such. And this was at a time when immigration of brown-skinned people wasn't what it is today and people I resembled (lighter skin, straighter hair) were assumed to be black. When I initially inquired of my parents as to what this really meant, they simply said that I looked different from those around me, but that different was good and special.

Absent the current emergence of labels such as "mixed or bi-racial", later in my formative years, other Blacks accepted me as "Black" and "Whites" accepted me as non-white or "Black". But that doesn't exempt the fact that I long ago had accepted and identified myself as black, with social circumstances leading the way.

I personally don't embrace the notion that because I am bioligcally 50% black, yet self-identify and have experienced my life as a black woman in a different historical context and all that entails, that I should now adjust my identity and revise my history to fit into anyone's box and bolster their comfort level because someone else now says it's ok to do so, or because they demand it. Going a bit further, it's downright offensive that some third party, in this day and age, would fall prey to a false sense of an inherent right to control and surmise that it's their call.

On a final note, one thing I do enjoy about the younger bi-racial generation is that they do seem to have more choices, in terms of personal identification and acceptance by their peers. More specifically, it appears to be more of their choice with mitigated social ramifications. In this respect, they dictate to society as opposed to society dictating to them.

And on a side note regarding the comment agreeing to agree to argue over Rick Warren as the provider of the inaugural invocation, I would ask that any readers of my comment consider this: being raised in circumstances such as those of Barack Obama and myself, it is important to look at the bigger picture--we were born for these moments, living and succeeding within seperate, as few can do. Once you get over the initial instinct to fight with everything that you have, the ideology of those that you perceive as trying to "school you in their ways", you can approach and navigate, with a level of clarity, the circumstance in which you, yourself, may serve to teach the "teacher" much more than they intend to teach you as the "student". In this circumstance, I'm reminded of a time long ago when my grandmother called a man a n-word in front of me. Even though I was angry and hurt, I didn't welcome her damnation, nor did I perpetually shut her out, even when others did so. Over time, I remained in close contact with her and she grew beyond her prejudices and racism, while my convictions remained unfaultered. I would like to think that my love was stronger than her hatred and I am proud to say that at 88 years of age, she cast her vote for Barack Obama on Nov. 4, 2008.

user-pic

Thank you so much for your rec and your comments.

It is a strange world we live in. I am 56 and was raised in a very prejudiced family, both sides. When I was 13 I asked to get my ears pierced and my mom said, "only Mexicans do that!" I replied, "well, I'm a quarter Mexican," and she slapped me across the face. You see, my grandfather was very tan from working outdoors his whole life (and I had never seen the parts that didn't see the sun!) and he spoke fluent Spanish, so I assumed I was Mexican.

I grew up w/ the n-word used liberally, and never even saw a black person in real life until I was 16 and my boyfriend took me to his college basketball games. I don't recall being uncomfortable at all. I just remember that they were really nice guys and I couldn't imagine calling them something that might hurt their feelings.

We raised our kids to be color blind, and they are. Eventually the rest of the family quit w/ the language, but the deep down feelings they had of some sort of inequality never went away and were present in their voting choice this cycle.

Truth be told, we really have come a long way, but there is much further to go. I teared up when I read your line about your grandmother voting. It's getting to be a better world. I can feel it.

user-pic

You may disagree, but always remember I said: Mother Teresa was a rapacious monster.

user-pic

Hitchens employs his direct frontal attack style more to wake up people as to the Radical Fundamentalist danger in American society than to try and change ignorant Christians in full denial.

You take your magic book, your invisible Big Booger Booger in the Sky and his Jewish zombie son with water wings attached... I will take Nature.

user-pic

Warren will not approach the questionable matter of Jesus' historicity, but I'll bet he would like to. He is much closer to Mainline Christian thought and action than any other "sin shouter" around.

Obama made a quite intelligent choice and he certainly couldn't have an inauguration without a minister's blessing now, could he? Essentially, any choice would have invited harsh criticism. I am afraid the gay community has over-reacted to this appointment/invitation. A good example of negative gay journalism is evident in Ann Rostows' constant retch. She harms the gay community when she tries to pin all their ills on Obama's choice. Absurd
