Rush Under Attack!

In an earlier blog; Something Wrong With Rush? I capsulized some of Rush's more incendiary statements to the Conservative Political Action Conference, (CPAC).  Politico's Jonathan Martin is reporting that a highly placed Republican isn't too happy with Rush, either: (emphasis mine)

On the same night he was offering the keynote address to the Conservative Political Action Conference, Rush Limbaugh drew criticism from an unlikely source: Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

In an interview on CNN with D.L. Hughley, Steele assured that he, not Limbaugh, was in charge of the party before saying that he wanted to put the right-wing talker "into context."

"Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer," Steele said. "Rush Limbaugh, his whole thing is entertainment. Yes it's incendiary, yes it's ugly."

Limbaugh, asked to respond, said he'd save his counter-attack for his listeners.

"I'll handle it on the radio," he wrote in an e-mail.

How long before Mr. Steele will thrown under Limbaugh's bus.  We are talking major groveling, here.

Stay tuned.

Well Reagan was an entertainer also, and he was not very good at it. I would love to see rush run however.

talk about skeletons in the closet.

Steele looks like an idiot.

Rahm cannot lose as far as addressing things to rush.

So far so good.

Is this an attempt to disavow Rush by the party or is Steele a rogue agent who will be severely punished? Can't wait for Keith, tonight.

I can't see how the GOP can extricate themselves from the Steele disaster without winding up with serious tire tracks on their backs. If they can him, it will be a tacit admission of poor judgment in electing him in the first place. If they keep him on, they tacitly admit that his bufoonery is representative of Party philosophy.

Congratulations, GOP!

Todd Beeton at mydd has a good take on the conundrum:

While I REALLY want to see Steele crawl back to Rush with an apology, I'm fairly sure that this time he won't. With the one two punch of both Steele and Cantor distancing themselves from Limbaugh this weekend, it appears they've made the calculation that the party must use Limbaugh as a foil to make themselves appear more moderate. I think it's probably wise in the long-run although, really, the beauty of Limbaugh is that from the Republican Party's perspective, there is no good option when it comes to responding to him, there's only which is less bad: piss off the base or alienate the middle. Were we ever this much of a mess?
