Word Up Republicans - America, Love It Or leave It

I grew up in the era of "Vietnam."  I marched.  I had long hair.  I constantly was told, if you don't like it here, leave.

I loved my country then, and I love my country, now, that is why I am sickened by the words, actions, and deeds of the Republican party as they politicize any attempt to save what, before they got their incompetent hands on it, was the most vital economy in the world.

The media have given the Republicans a free pass, in fact encourages them on their blatant propagandizing, polarizing, and politicizing of the stimulus bill, and everything else.  This trend may be turning, today in a lead editorial the New York Times called out the Republicans; What Part of 'Stimulus' Don't They Get?

Imagine yourself jobless and struggling to feed your family while the governor of your state threatens to reject tens of millions of dollars in federal aid earmarked for the unemployed. That is precisely what is happening in poverty-ridden states like Louisiana and Mississippi where Republican governors are threatening to turn away federal aid rather than expand access to unemployment insurance programs in ways that many other states did a long time ago.

What makes these bad decisions worse is that they are little more than political posturing by rising Republican stars, like Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina. This behavior reinforces the disturbing conclusion that the Republican Party seems more interested in ideological warfare than in working on policies that get the country back on track.

The editorial points out that their plan, and it is, as dumb as it is, "a plan" isn't connecting with the American people:

Fortunately, as President Obama prepares for his first address to Congress on Tuesday evening, voters of both parties have noticed. About three-quarters of those polled in a recent New York Times/CBS News survey -- including more than 60 percent of Republicans -- said Mr. Obama has been trying to work with Republicans. And 63 percent said Republicans in Congress opposed the stimulus package primarily for political reasons, not because they thought it would be bad for the economy. It should be sobering news for Republicans that about 8 in 10 said the party should be working in a bipartisan way.

The editorial ends with stern advice:

Governors like Mr. Jindal should be worrying about how to end this recession while helping constituents feed and house their families -- not about finding ways to revive tired election-year arguments about big spending versus small government.

It's time that, we the people echo the Times advice.  Live in a Republican congressional district, call, write, e-mail your representative and them know that he represents all the people.  Got a GOP senator, governor, do the same.  And, the media, they are all a twitter, over Twitter, let them know what you think about the job they are doing in helping the GOP to bring down our country.  And, when that obnoxious co-worker, or family member rails on about our President. and his programs, please remind them; we are all Americans, and we should all want to see "our" country succeed.  America, Love It Or leave It

.

Please please please . . .

Love it or leave it?

Not that old canard . . . It outlived it's usefulness to those of us it was used against who stayed and have fought the good fight. Just like you Steve.

I too grew up through the era of "Vietnam." I served in the Navy. I also marched, for Peace!. Not anti-war marches. I didn't have long hair, then.

And the only time I can remember that I was told if you don't like it here, leave, I calmly responded with, "Who the hell's going to stand up and defend your country for you, you?"

Other than that, you've made some very good points in your post.

Thanks for the thoughtful post.

I've been listening to a lot of right-wing radio lately for entertainment. They're just so angry at their new powerlessness that they hardly know what to do with themselves. For some sadistic reason, I find this hilarious. I was listening the other day and a woman called in and very earnestly asked, about liberals, "Why can't they just go live somewhere else?"

Poor lady.
