Dr. McKalip went to my school and is now a faculty member, let them know what you think!

He graduated before I started, but he is still listed as a faculty member at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, FL.

Neurosurgeons are very rare and important specialists.  But to think that more than a select few of them has any clue about what is going on with the Big Picture in Healthcare is ludicrous.  A good neurosurgeon is rarely seen outside the hospital.  They are also on the upper end of the doctor pay scale so they have a keen interest in remaining at the top.  I am sure they all hate managed care.

You can find public information about Dr. McKalip here.
Just type in his last name in the search box.

Interesting note -- he doesn't carry malpractice insurance.  He also accepts medicaid.  Draw your own conclusions about that...

I would recommend letting the administration at USF know what you think about one of their faculty members emailing such a blatantly racist piece of propaganda.

I don't know Dr. McKalip, I have never met the man.  But  I find it a little embarrassing to have gone to the same school as he did.

I'm an RN, 3 decades in health care, about 55% in critical care with some experience regarding neurosurgeons.

It's interesting that the difference between neurosurgeons and neurologists is exactly the opposite from cardiac surgeons and cardiologists. The neurosurgeons are the demigods (in their own minds) while the cardiologists are the prima donnas in the cardiac world.

One neurosurgeon I worked with was not particularly obnoxious to the nursing staff. I was reading one of his op reports on fairly young women one day, wading through the boring details that have to be in them, to find the last sentence revealing.

"And thus her life was saved."

I read it allowed to the rest of the ICU staff at the desk, providing a wonderful shot of endorphins from all the laughter.

One of the polls on doctors support for health reform was done by Indiana University last year. The 60% who favored SINGLE PAYER were the primary care physicians. The other 40% were the highest paid specialists, neuro and ortho surgeons, and radiologists. The doctors who have to deal the most with insurance companies denying care are the ones fed up with them.

An amazing number of physicians are not politically aware because of personal disinterest and the hours they work in high stress. (I'd like a few CEO's to shadow some primary care physicians for at least a day.)

There were several diaries on this at DKos yesterday - including action plans with phone numbers, etc. McKalip resigned his new position as a local AMA president. His apology was one of the dodge types. 'I'm sorry if I offended anyone...'
