Katrina never hit New Orleans...

Katrina hit well to the east of the city.  New Orleans did experience hurricane force winds for a few hours, estimated to be Category 1 or 2.  However, since a hurricane rotates counter-clockwise and the storm hit to the east, these wind were not coming from the direction of the Gulf of Mexico and there was little storm surge.   If Gustav maintains its strength and hits to the west of New Orleans, it will be much worse than Katrina.  This is why we should not rebuild New Orleans, particularly the areas that are below sea level.  We are just wasting our money, it would much cheaper to move everyone inland and build a new city (not that we really need to do that either).  New Orleans is also much more vulnerable than just about any other city of the Gulf Coast.

For those who argue that The Netherlands is a good example of what can be done to fight the rise of the ocean, I would argue that isn't the same thing.  I don't believe The Netherlands has to deal with any hurricanes (not true hurricanes).  They also have a little more demand for land in The Netherlands, while we have quite a supply.  The Netherlands also spends a great deal of money and effort to fight the sea.

I grew up in the southern half of Florida and experienced hurricanes first hand on several occasions.  That's also why I moved away from the coast.  We should let nature reclaim some of the areas we have developed; it would be better for everyone in the long run.

Obama's Speech in High Def on Dish Network

I was glad I figured out Dish Network had a high definition broadcast of the Democratic Convention.  I got to watch it live without all the visual junk and "audience meter" on the screen.  I didn't have to listen to anyone's opinion about what I had just heard.  I was almost able to experience it as if I were there myself, and quite an experience it was!  It also reminded me, again, of just how bad network and cable coverage has gotten.

Palin Upset Murkowski??!

I have been reading a few things today, but when I read about how Gov. Palin had somehow pulled a surprise and beat Gov. Murkowski in the 2006 Alaska Governor Primary Election I was quite "surprised" myself.  I was living up in Alaska when Frank Murkowski won the Governor race in 2002.  By the time he was up for re-election in 2006 he had become very unpopular.  Even the Republicans couldn't stand him.  It was no surprise, or upset, when he lost to Palin.

It also was no surprise when she beat the 2006 Democratic candidate and former Gov. Tony Knowles.  Knowles had been Governor up until 2002 when term limits kept him from running for a third term.  However, Tony Knowles couldn't even beat Lisa Murkowski in the 2004 senate race.  This occurred despite the fact that her father Frank had appointed her to take his place in his Senate seat after he was elected as Governor.  Everyone was surprised when Frank appointed his daughter, and that was the beginning of his slide into unpopularity.

She is really untested and extremely inexperienced.  The Governor of Alaska is the leader of a population of people comparable to a small to medium sized city.  Before that she was the Mayor of Wasilla, a town of 6,500 and suburb of Anchorage.  The only way it could have been worse (for him) is if he had picked Barbara Cubin, the lone congressional rep. from Wyoming (the only state with a smaller population than Alaska and a place where I have also lived).

I met a lot of crazy people when I lived in Alaska, but McCain is plum loco to pick Palin as his VP running mate.
