I think I will be supporting Gov. Paterson's primary opponent in 2010. I don't think he really knows what he's doing, particularly when it comes to political stuff.

As for this "wandering the wilderness" thing, it depends on how the 9 CDs are apportioned out. If I remember correctly, the Democrats have been making steady gains in the state legislatures and governorships over the past decade, which would mean that reapportionment is far less likely to swing the GOP's way in 2012. At the very least, the red states will enjoy a fair and balanced reapportionment, relatively free of gerrymandering, which would probably not work to their advantage.

Furthermore, one has to ask oneself how the Sun Belt came to have more population growth than the Rust Belt. The plain fact that B. Hussein Obama was able to flip Virginia and North Carolina will give you a clue - they came from the blue states - places like New York where we've been hemorrhaging jobs for quite some time (the weather isn't so nice this time of year, either). So this migration of population is steadily making places like Dixie less red, which means those 9 seats are at least as likely to be won by Democrats in 2012.

I think SFC Trollmaster was talking about the popular vote, but he's still wrong. B. Hussein Obama got 67 million votes and won by something like 8.6 million votes out of 127 million cast, according to the DailyKos scoreboard. He also beat Bush's 2004 numbers by five million.

Also according to the scoreboard, Bush got 50.7% of the vote in 2004, while B. Hussein Obama got 52.7% in 2008. That's two points, which is huge under the circumstances.

MFM - let me raise my middle finger at the 110th Congress as well. Fortunately, the 110th only has another 10 days to live, after which the 111th will take over with fewer Republicans to deal with and fewer excuses for being a bunch of spineless weenies.

Of course, the most important part of this "change" bit is the fact that we now have the White House, and all the Bushies will be gone soon. No Bushies means no more bushit for the Congress to cave on. I hope. Sure, the remaining Republicans can hunker down and play goal-line defense, but if they're blocking stuff that is clearly in the public interest, woe be unto them in 2010.

Of course, if the Democrats weren't such spineless weenies in the first place, they'd probably have a larger majority both now and in the next Congress, and we wouldn't have to take any more shit from the likes of Mitch McConnell.

Actually, that's the U.S. Senate. The people who decides who's credentials are legit and should be allowed to sit. It's the reason why Blago isn't appointing anybody - because a large enough majority has already concluded that anyone Blago appoints lacks legitimacy due to the pay for play scandal. In the Coleman/Franken case, they will probably go with the Minnesota state canvassing board's conclusion and seat whoever they sent to Washington.

Yes and no. The following large states are typically NOT considered battleground states:

New York
California
Texas

When have you seen a candidate from either party campaign there once the primaries have been decided. Even big states have low-density areas, like Upstate New York. Even mostly-empty states have decent-sized cities in them where one might consider campaigning if it meant a few thousand votes.

So you'd see more action in both one-party states and those with low population density. It would be a good thing.

Well, it stands a greater chance of success now, especially since it probably wouldn't go out to the state legislatures until next year, when non-stupid people have a greater advantage. New York, for example, has just wrested control of its state senate from the Republicans for the first time in 40 years.
