The Iranians are fighting for something that everyone can understand and empathize with, regardless of background or political outlook...fair elections. They are essentially unified under a leader calling for non-violence. This is key.

What exactly the Palestinians are fighting for is less clear. The right of return? The return of all land lost in the wars of 1948 and 1967? The end of Israel as a Jewish state? The ethnic cleansing of all Jews from Palestine? The Palestinian leadership is not in agreement at all in its objectives, with the militant Hamas calling for the destruction of Israel in its charter, which some people believe means also the destruction of Israelis (or at least stripping them of most of their property). Violence, especially chilling acts of terror like the suicide bombing at a child's birthday party at Sbarro's, has been an important element of Palestinian resistance, and the martyrs most actively mourned have been suicide bombers.

So while there has always been a pro-Israel bias in the US media, there are important differences between the Palestinian strategy and the Iranian one (so far). If the Palestinians were to unite around a leader calling for massive non-violent protests, Israel would quickly lose US support. However, the Palestinians don't seem to have that kind of leadership.

Come on. What profound insight into the mortgage crisis do you think this guy has? How much stuff has been written about this already? Do you really not know how it went down?

"The conventional wisdom holds that the junk mortgages exploded because lenders simply sold off their loans as soon as they made them, and the Wall Street securitizers immediately resold them as securities. But American Home flamed out -- second biggest bankruptcy of 2007 -- for the opposite reason: its founder decided its riskiest mortgages were so lucrative that he wanted to hold them."

So American Home had a lunatic founder. That doesn't alter the big picture, which Andrews' term "conventional wisdom" suggests is somehow incorrect.

"Likewise, we all know the rating agencies screwed up massively in assigning Triple A ratings to securities backed by subprime securities. ......In fact, a number of experts had warned about the flaws long before the roof fell in."

But hey, he's got some EXAMPLES!

"Lastly, Busted has a chapter on the way that lenders systematically targeted hispanics, blacks and other borrowers who had been avoided by mainstream banks. We've all heard those accusations, but I was stunned at the stories I ran into just outside of Washington, DC in Manassas, VA"

Yes, who could have imagined that corrupt lenders would take advantage of poorly-educated minorities? And of course, we haven't seen any stories like these.....on FOX news, perhaps.

Andrews is small potatoes compared to criminals like Henry Paulson, so I don't bear him the ill will that Bullsh*t seems to.

I just chuckle at the folks that will pay 26 bucks for a bunch of rehashed "analysis" + the Times Magazine piece, which was all the Schadenfreude we're going to get. Maybe he'll sell them a mortgage, while he's at it?

"the goal is to explore in intimate detail the broader corruption and cynical recklessness that infected players at each level of the financial food chain."

Really? That would have been a good thing to do as an reporter for the New York Times while it was happening. I'll bet you would have won some sort of award for that!

It seems to me now the goal is really to peddle your book, which will add little to our understanding of the crisis, by now "exposed" pretty thoroughly. No one is reading this for your economic insight (if you had any, you would have..um...) Instead, it gives a schadenfreude thrill for all of us who behaved like grownups and bought houses we could afford. I know I enjoyed the Times Magazine excerpt-- and all the McArdle pillorying. Of course, I'm not going to spend a dime for the book. Perhaps I'll get it from the public library.

But I've got to hand it to you, you're willing to go on the TPM and be heckled and abused. So perhaps you deserve a few coins for all the joy you've brought to those who restrained their sense of self-entitlement.

I doubt they even watched the video to see the content. "They" just looked at the number of people who flagged it as offensive and pulled it. For all they know, Blumenthal is another Aryan memorabilia collector who likes to post his rants about the ZOG.

First of all, everyone already knows what they are going to say. Is this to appease the corporate masters? Do they not get that they don't have hegemony/monopoly over what gets published on the web, unlike physical newspapers that require a massive distribution apparatus? Do they not get that Froomkin is his own brand now, and doesn't need them anyway?

Or, things could go the other way...brutal repression may (will probably?) win the day, establishing the Iranian regime as so evil that the Iranian people might support air attacks against Revolutionary Guard units, government buildings, and other elements of the regime's power structure. A network of disaffected Iranians on the ground helping to pinpoint targets could make such a bombing campaign very effective.

I think we are all sort of woefully uninformed on the subject. While it's clear that North Korea is staging a tantrum to get what it wants (what does it want?) it also seems clear that rewarding the tantrum cannot be a good long-term strategy. I think the big question would be, what is going on with the internal succession battle? Who are the parties, and which one do we want to win? How can we help them?

Also, the argument that S. Korea and China want to prop up the existing N. Korean government in order to avoid refugees or the costs of unification is also a short-term one. What will happen if, a decade from now, a similar government is in place, with a population stunted physically and intellectually from malnutrion, and brainwashed with Orwellian propaganda for 70 years? How is that going to be any better than dealing with it now?

Obama should ignore the Krauthammers and think about 5-10 years down the road.

This is good stuff, but not really news. Shortly before being dismissed, Rumsfeld was introduced by Peter Pace as someone who "knows God's will, and does it" or something to that effect. The rise of fundamentalist evangelicalism among the military and military chaplains has also been well documented. A friend of mine once remarked in the early days of the Iraq war, "As long as its fundamentalists killing each other, I don't really care." However, this will be of use to historians as they write the story of the collapse of the American empire.
