For all of those who feel that Obama is undeserving of the Nobel Peace Prize

If you don't see the change that Obama has brought to America and the world, then your head is in the sand and to quote "Inherit the Wind": "Perhaps it is you who have moved away -- by standing still."

From The New Zealand Herald : "
He may see no alternative to fighting the war against al Qaeda in Afghanistan but everywhere else he has reasserted the importance of the United Nations and of multilateral diplomacy. He replaced military threats with dialogue with Iran and North Korea. He has begun talks with Russia over nuclear disarmament.

He has prioritised peace in the Middle East. He has reached out a hand of friendship to the Muslim world. He has thrown Washington's recalcitrant attitude to global warming into reverse. All change begins with a change of mind by one individual and Obama has been that person.

The prize may make life difficult for him domestically, giving his right-wing critics another stick with which to beat him over healthcare.

But to the rest of the world the US President is an inspiration. The Audacity of Hope, he called one of his books. Rarely has a single individual in recent times given so much of the world cause to dare to anticipate that a better world can yet be made."

Well ya coulda chosen the Tim Hardin version!

user-pic

hahha. You almost always make me laugh.

user-pic

So, basically, any Democrat coming in after Bush would have won?

More than one liberal commentator is beginning to pass that message. This prize wasn't for Obama, it was against GWB.

It's astonishing the way people try to play down EVERYTHING that Obama has accomplished.

Obama has a gift for communication. And as much as the media used to jabber on and on about how he wasn't connecting with the people, those crowds last year says otherwise. He has the ability to inspire and move people. Not a single Democrat that competed for the nomination could have brought down the house like he did - so NO,I do not believe any ole Democrat would have won the award.

However, some of this was a big fat "fuck you" to GW & Co and their ideology. And I would not be surprised if the nastiness that occurred over the summer helped put Obama over the top.

I'm getting pretty sick of it tooooooooo. But a majority here still love our new President and a vast majority of Europe, Canada, even South America to say nothing of Africa and other parts we never hear about, just love the guy.

IT IS VIVAAMERICA. For now. Why not relish in the good old days.Just for once. The rest of the world does not wish us harm.

Thank you Dick D. I had to ask my nephew what is so wrong with the rest of the world liking the USA? His response was that Europe can't vote in the US. I kept my voice under control but I made sure he understood that people are willing to get into boats we wouldn't drag to the dump and sail across oceans to get here. And all the rest of the hurrah! for American spiel. Then I asked him again, what is so wrong with the rest of the world liking the US? Why are Republicans so unffing patriotic?

user-pic

CT...who are you responding too? I think I missed something.

What has been the downside of the President's popularity abroad? How is it a bad thing?

I don't think any democrat would have won the Nobel. President Obama is unique in what he represents.

I think of it as a Nobel Peace Prize for the American citizenry.

We voted to give diplomacy a chance after the bull ran through the china shop willy-nilly.

But to the rest of the world the US President is an inspiration.

*sigh*

I am not going to get into a long dissertation about this view of "the rest of the world" as some bunch of drooling half-wits.

Yes, Obama is on the right track. Despite this, I - a well-known hater of all things Obama  - feel the award was premature. I think the President agrees with me.

The best thing you could do would be to do as Obama says and treat it as a yet-unearned prize and work toward the ends instead of weakly arguing about the present.

Karl,

I agree with you 100%. I am not arguing that Obama has accomplished substantive things that have made him deserving of the Award. I am saying that what he HAS done, his actions and dialogue, have been given a great recognition. And it is the recognition of where we are going in this country and how we interact with the world that is important here. Obama did not do this on his own, but he is the Captain of the ship and he has taken us all along for a very important journey.

P.S. The Nobel Prize committee obviously didn't think it was premature. They felt it was timely, and I applaud that. Too often we get wound up in rewarding the end-results of our work and not rewarding the means by which we achieve it.

Well said.

Deep, as usual

Bill, you really must get over your crush on me. You really are not my type. I don't like to spend my time with people who don't bother to think. I'm sure there are lots of people out there who would find you acceptable as a companion, but I just don't. Sorry.

user-pic

Don't worry - it's not that type of crush. I am just being nice to you. I love everybody on here. If it was the type of crush you are thinking of, I'd probably be following you around on TPM and make unsolicited comments to your posts.

I'm trying to show that it's possible to disagree with someone else's ideas without throwing around insults about their intelligence, character, etc.

Enjoy your Sunday. I'm off to church.

I have to ask the obvious; as a...

a well-known hater of all things Obama :rolleyes...

-- Why do you feel compelled to chime in here?
-- What in the world could he do (since you admittedly) "hate all things Obama" to make you make an objective statement about the guy?

-- If you "hated all things citrus" would you feel compelled to let us all know how you feel about lemon meringue pie? And would it matter if you did?

user-pic

I don't care what the reason behind the award is, I'm just enjoying the total apoplexy it has inspired in the "Hate America First" right. I haven't had this much fun watching someone trolled into an over the top, angry response in a long, long time. In fact, in hopes of prolonging the sideshow, I'm going around the blogosphere posting something like this into all of the tea partier's threads:

"I think it's really being awarded to the American people for choosing a new direction. The world had little hope for us for 8 fucking years. Electing Obama was a beautiful message of hope to our fellow world community members, telling them that we've seen the horror of the path we were on and are now trying to mend our ways. The Nobel Committee sees this and knows what it means for the future of peace - that America is on-board again and has forsaken the frightening principles we seemed to embrace during the Republican years.

Peace? Yes We Can."
